CONFESSION will be heard on Tuesday mornings after the 9:00am Mass at St. Lawrence Church in the main body of the church. Also, at St. Mary’s on Friday after the 9:00am Mass and Saturday after the 4:00pm Mass. Please maintain social distancing and wait your turn in the vestibule.

The Word This Week “Shepherd-King o’er mountain steep, homeward guide thy wand ‘ring sheep.” This hymn which we will probably sing today captures the readings perfectly: our King is not a cruel tyrant or despot, but a shepherd who loves his flock, who would (and did) give his life for them. Love for the flock means that he will have to judge them, separating the sheep from those who do not belong to him. Coming to the end of the Church’s year leads us to look to our final ending, the homecoming the hymn speaks of. The judgement of the end of time we do not view as a trial or a terror, but as a coming home: look back to the Isaiah reading on the 28th Sunday to see what a homecoming party is offered. All we do is put our lives in order, living just and holy lives, longing for the day of the lord to come. Source: https://www.salfordliturgy.org.uk/ordinary33a.htm

From the Desk of Fr. Ben

Last week, the Vatican released the very-much anticipated ‘McCarrick Report.’ Preparation for this document has been exhausting, given its well over 400 pages. It’s possible that the report had been finished and the preparers just weren’t ready to release it. I cannot say. What I can say is this report has been two years in the making. And it ain’t pretty.

I personally encourage those reading my column not to read it. If you’re unfamiliar with all this, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As a priest I feel it is my job to read it, and painfully see every detail. I do not think that is your job. Many would read it and find themselves hurt and empty. I can’t demand that our parishioners not read it - I just thought I’d read it for you, and hope that’s enough.

Ex-Cardinal McCarrick rose through the ranks of leadership in the American Catholic Church, from the 1970s into the new millennium. And through rumors, hearsay, first-hand encounters, and a lot of ‘look-the-other-way,’ it should have been clear that something was not right. There are instances in the report that suggest good-will on the parts of some priests and bishops and even Pope John Paul in regard to McCarrick’s rise, but there are many failures too. Suffice it to say that some people knew of the Cardinal’s corruption; some felt trapped and unable to make a difference; some tried and got nowhere. It was, in church-language, a corporal failure. I don’t want to get into the heart-wrenching moments of the report. A bulletin is no place for that. I remember hearing this from Cardinal Tobin two years ago (the man who ordained me a priest) - “I had heard rumors about McCarrick, I admit that. But I just couldn’t believe they were true.” It was Tobin who ended a non-disclosure agreement with two victims of McCarrick’s predatory actions. It took us a long time to face reality, and we’re still reeling in it.

I’ve read that Catholics in the US right now by and large trust their priests. They trust their pastors, the men they see on Sundays. But overwhelmingly our churches don’t trust the Bishops. I hope someday that changes. People over time have begun to think, for example, of the horrible mistakes of some priests as different from most priests, who by-and-large are good, holy men (we’re tryin’ at least). Maybe in the future our Catholics will feel better about Bishops, and see that while some made major mistakes, and failed as shepherds, most of our Bishops really are great men. I know that’s hard for people, I understand. I just hope we get there.

I’ve been hearing a line come up on Catholic radio about this report, directed to folks who are so angry about this (understandably) that they want to leave the Church. The line is: don’t leave Jesus because of Judas.

Let’s pray for healing, let’s move forward, and let’s see the truth of these words. God Bless.
