People of Hope Throughout this Easter season the readings have drawn us into the experience of the early church. We have tasted the excitement and zeal of the first Christians. Now, with them, we listen to the words of Saint Peter, who reminds us that when people notice that we are people of hope, we should be ready to explain why. This challenges us. Do others even notice that we are people of hope? In a world often marked by cynicism and hopelessness, do we stand out as people who offer hope and reassurance to others? In today’s Gospel Jesus promises that when he leaves the earth he will not leave us orphaned. Today he promises to send his Advocate, the Spirit of truth who will be with us always. LITURGY MATTERS BALTIMORE—The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) approved five liturgical items presented by the Committee on Divine Worship during the annual Fall Gen-eral Assembly. The approved items include the use of the Mexican missal to draft the U.S. Spanish-language missal with appro-priate adaptations, adding adaptations to the marriage ceremony and on proposed English-language translations of the Order of Celebrating Marriage and the Order of Confirmation. The U.S. Bishops approved the use of the Spanish-language translation of the Misal Romano from Mexico as the base text for the U.S. version of the Spanish-language Missal, which will include additional texts and adaptations. Those ap-proved adaptations include replacing the Mexican calendar with the liturgical calendar for the United States; translation of the U.S. Norms for Reception of Holy Communion Under Both Kinds; adding transla-tions of liturgical texts and prayers for U.S. saints, adding 20 Latin American patronal feasts for use by immigrant groups from those re-spective countries; and adding the U.S. adaptations for the General Instructions of the Roman Missal. The bishops also approved the Or-der of Celebrating Marriage. The final translation from the Internation-al Committee on English in the Liturgy (ICEL), includes some prayers and rites not previously included in the first edition, for example, an additional text that may be used after the exchange of vows, and a rite for the renewal of marital commitment on anniversaries. Upon approv-al, the book will be sent to Rome for recognitio and later published as the English-language ritual for marriage. Also approved by a 218-5-2 vote, were four adaptations to the Order of Celebrating Marriage. Those include the option of an alternative forms of vows, the option of moving the Nuptial Blessing to follow the Prayer of the Faithful during Mass, the option to include a Litany of the Saints at the beginning of the Marriage Rite, and translating into English the Hispanic cultural adaptations of the Exchange of Coins and the Blessing and Placing of the Lazo or Veil over the couple during the nuptial blessing. The bish-ops also voted on the Order of Confirmation. This is a retranslation by ICEL of the order of Confirmation according to the norms of the docu-ment Liturgiam authenticam.

Treasures From Our Tradition The custom of genuflection is not found everywhere in the Catholic Church. In fact, it is a bit of breach of etiquette to genuflect in most Eastern Catholic Churches. If you’re visiting an Eastern Catholic or an Orthodox church, the “when in Rome” rule should be adopted. Watch what the home team is doing! Usually, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox reserve a small portion of the eucharistic bread for the dying in a cupboard or eucharistic dove, but it is not a center of attention or devotion. The rule is to make a pro-found bow, called a “metasis,” toward the altar—bowing deeply while making the sign of the cross. East and West split years before we Westerners began to reserve the Blessed Sacrament prominently in our churches. Thus, the East never changed the original custom of bowing toward the altar. Increasingly, as taber-nacles became more widespread in the West and moved into prominent placement within churches, we re-placed the bow toward the altar with a genuflection toward the Blessed Sacra-ment when its place of reservation is visible. In a church where the Blessed Sacra-ment is reserved in a special chapel or off the main axis of the building, normal-ly you should bow toward the altar when you enter your pew, because the eucha-ristic table is the principal sign of Christ’s presence in the church building. If you have ever participated in the litur-gy of Dedication of a Church and Altar, there is no mistaking the altar’s signifi-cance: it is first slathered with chrism and then adorned with a brazier billow-ing clouds of incense that fill the whole church as a sign of prayer and pres-ence!

When gossip gets out of hand, it can damage reputations and create divi-sion and fear, without any discussion of how to resolve the problem. Teach-ing your children to avoid gossip and focus on truth starts at home—as al-ways, parents lead by example. Try not to gossip about rumors or other people, and teach your children to seek solutions when there is a prob-lem rather than just talking about it.
