YOUR EDUCATION IN MadridIf you are looking for an exciting international program at a
prestigious U.S. university, the Madrid Campus is for you.
Saint Louis University offers more than 100 academic programs, many
of which are highly ranked by U.S. World & News Report and various
international organizations. All of the programs are challenging and
relevant in today’s world.
The University was founded on the Jesuit tradition of “educating the
whole person.” You will complete a core of liberal arts courses in addition
to your main subject of study. As a result, you will come to think about
the world in a different way. You will also develop a strong base for
solving problems and thinking critically, skills essential for your future.
You may have already decided upon a degree program: engineering,
business or international relations, for example. Sample plans of study
are available on-line. AP, Cambridge A-levels, SAT II and IB credits can
fulfill degree requirements, as can courses taken at other universities:
your hard work elsewhere will give you a head start at the Madrid
Campus.
Not sure what major to pursue? Torn between economics or physics,
philosophy or math, music or business? You can design the program
you want, focusing on one area or bridging multiple disciplines. The
liberal arts structure of degrees enables you to explore subjects before
choosing a program.
Faculty and staff will help you with these important decisions; they
are 100% committed to you as a student. They will reach out to you
before you arrive, meet with you during orientation and be there for you
throughout your studies. The Madrid Campus pledges to provide you
with the advice and resources you need to choose a career, find an
exciting internship, write a senior thesis, get into graduate school or land
your first job.
Finally, as a SLU graduate, you are connected to over 118,956 alumni
living around the world - more than 1,800 in Spain. You will become part
of this international community of leaders who attribute their success, as
you will too, to the formation they received at Saint Louis University.

picnics or morning runs. Boutiques, tapas restaurants and dance clubs crowd together in what once used to be medieval alleyways. In
Madrid, the old world meets twenty-first-century elegance.
You can see the world’s top soccer teams in action in Madrid. The city is also home to an incredible music scene, from jazz to the classics.
You can dine out on traditional Spanish cuisine as well as sushi or the latest fusion fare. You can wander through open air markets, see the
latest box office hit at the theater, relax in the shade at a café, or stay up late dancing at a street festival.

home in our newly renovated, historically protected buildings, as well as the whole city of Madrid. Students live with Spanish families,

SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY-MADRID RANKINGS, FACTS AND FIGURES
The U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges”
ranks SLU among the top 35% of all 281 national research
universities.
In 2013, Washington Monthly ranked SLU fourth in the
nation for most community service done, more than one
million hours, by its students. SLU has also been named
to the President’s Higher Education Community Service
Honor Roll for six consecutive years.
The Princeton Review lists SLU among the nation’s top
schools for undergraduate education in its 2014 “Best 378
Colleges” guidebook, which recognizes only 15 percent of
all four-year colleges in the nation.
SLU is one of only seven Catholic universities classified as
RU/H: Research Universities (high research activity) by the
Carnegie Foundation. In fiscal-year 2013, SLU’s research
funds totaled $53.1 million.
The most recent edition of Barron’s Best Buys in College
Education lists SLU as one of 220 colleges and universities
that provide “a first-rate education at an affordable price.”
In the publication, Barron’s calls SLU an “urban research
university that refuses to act like one, caring for each
individual as a total person and drawing its undergraduates
into the life of the surrounding community.”

MASCOT: Billiken
Whether on your own or with the University, you will be able to experience Spain, the rest of Europe, and
beyond with the Madrid Campus as your home base.
• Many academic courses incorporate study trips to destinations in Spain and the rest of Europe to
enhance your understanding of concepts explored in the classroom.
• The Office of Student Life sponsors day and weekend excursions and can provide you with insider’s
advice if you’d prefer to explore on your own.
• Madrid’s Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport, connected to the city by metro, makes it easy to take
direct flights to cities all over Europe and beyond: Paris, London, Athens, Marrakech, and more.
Colleges and universities across the United States have their own mascots, which are
symbols of good luck for sports teams and an ambassador of goodwill for the school.
The Billiken’s connection to Saint Louis University is linked to the early twentieth-century
craze for college football. Sportswriters thought SLU’s football coach, John Bender, who took
over the team in 1910, bore a striking resemblance to an impish cartoon character that was a
national sensation at the time. Thus, they dubbed the football team, “Bender’s Billikens.” The
public took up the moniker, and it soon became the official nickname of all SLU athletic teams
as well as all SLU students.
To be a Billiken means to embrace the entire Saint Louis University experience.
You will not only be a student, but a member of the University
community. You will be a volunteer, a collaborator,
and a leader. You will be prepared and
professional. Most of all, you will be
yourself: unique.
