  • GODS LOGIC IS NOT OURS

Nobody will ever mistake the Bible for a logic textbook. We need to remember this when we approach todays

readings. How can a God who knows no favorites have a chosen people, or give us the disci-plines of fasting and almsgiving and then instruct us not to talk about them? God, in love and tenderness, knows how quickly we can get into a rut. The Spirit

inspires passages like the instruction from Sirach and the parable in Luke to help drag us out of the rut of thinking that Gods ways are our ways. Sirach poetically uses contrast to answer the question, Whose prayer will reach the lofty clouds of heaven? The answer? Those who are lowly on earth. Jesus amplifies this in his parable of the Pharisee and the publican. It is Spirit-inspired illogic that communicates todays message: God hears the voices of those who are ignored by the rest of the world. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Lumen Fidei - On the Light of Faith

In last week's paragraph, we learned that Gods Holy presence in the world is real and He has proven this with visible signs throughout human history. When we choose to love things more than we love God it leaves us with a big void in our lives. The absence of faith and love for God leaves us completely empty and alone. God is real and because He loves us so much He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to save us by His passion, death and resurrection. This is our faith. If we believe in it and practice it, we show our love and gratitude to God. Our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ is what feeds us, it nourishes our bodies and minds, it strengthens us and connects us with Him through prayer and worship. In the next paragraph, we will learn more about how Christ is the visible image of Gods presence in the world.

    18. This fullness which Jesus brings to faith has another decisive aspect. In faith, Christ is not simply the one in whom we believe, the supreme manifestation of Gods love; he is also the one with whom we are united precisely in order to believe. Faith does not merely gaze at Jesus, but sees things as Jesus himself sees them, with his own eyes: it is a participation in his way of seeing. In many areas in our lives we trust others who know more than we do. We trust the architect who builds our home, the pharmacist who gives us medicine for healing, the lawyer who defends us in court. We also need someone trustworthy and knowledgeable where God is concerned. Jesus, the Son of God, is the one who makes God known to us (cf. Jn 1:18). Christs life, his way of knowing the Father and living in complete and constant relationship with him, opens up new and inviting vistas for human experience. Saint John brings out the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus for our faith by using various forms of the verb "to believe". In addition to "believing that" what Jesus tells us is true, John also speaks of "believing" Jesus and "believing in" Jesus. We "believe" Jesus when we accept his word, his testimony, because he is truthful. We "believe in" Jesus when we personally welcome him into our lives and journey towards him, clinging to him in love and following in his footsteps along the way. To enable us to know,

accept and follow him, the Son of God took on our flesh. In this way he also saw the Father humanly, within the setting of a journey unfolding in time. Christian faith is faith in the incarnation of the Word and his bodily resurrection; it is faith in a God who is so close to us that he entered our human history. Far from divorcing us from reality, our faith in the Son of God made man in Jesus of Nazareth enables us to grasp realitys deepest meaning and to see how much God loves this world and is constantly guiding it towards himself. This leads us, as Christians, to live our lives in this world with ever greater commitment and intensity. As we can see in the above paragraph, Jesus Christ is the full manifestation of Gods Love for us in the world. When we believe in Christ, we are united with God. It is our union with Christ that takes us back to God the Father. We came from God and through Christ we go back to God. There is a necessity to believe in Jesus Christ because He is the one who truly knows who God is. Christ is the One who makes God known to us through His holy presence. Christ is the eternal Word of God that became flesh. It is Jesus Christ that allows us to see the reality of God in the world because He is the visible image of God.

YEAR OF FAITH In this new universe, the heavenly Jerusalem, God will have his dwelling among men. He will wipe away

every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away. . . For man, this consummation will be the final realization of the unity of the human race, which God willed from creation and of which the pilgrim Church has been in the nature of sacrament. Those who are united with Christ will form the community of the redeemed, the holy city of God, the Bride, the wife of the Lamb. She will not be wounded any longer by sin, stains, self-love, that destroy or wound the earthly community. The beatific vision, in which God opens himself in an inexhaustible way to the elect, will be the ever-flowing well-spring of happiness, peace, and mutual communion. (CCC, n. 1044-1045).

P A R K I N G L O T S A F E T Y With the renovation of the church we are faced with a reduction of parking spaces . We ask that you use extra safety and patience when arriving and de-parting the parking lot for weekend Mass and

  • YEAR OF FAITH: AUGUST 2013

True Wealth, True Grit: Faith's Journey Continues

--Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J.
