MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ. This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.

Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the needs of others. We commit our selves to the beatitudes, to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life.

We hand on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and witness.

In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in our midst.

INCREASE OUR FAITH

Today’s Gospel passage falls under the category that has come to be known as the “hard sayings” of Jesus. Hard to understand, hard to apply to life today. The Apostles’ request, “increase our faith,” is in

response to a previous “hard saying” about how frequently we are called upon to forgive others. Curiously, Jesus seems ra-ther unforgiving in responding to their request, or in describing the manner in which they are to serve

others. Jesus uses exaggerations to wake us up to how God is present in our lives, and how we are urged to live if God is with us. None of us is called upon to uproot trees or cast mountains into the sea. The faith we have is adequate for the task we are called upon to do: spread the gospel by our witness. And living that witness is done not for self-gratification or recognition, but out of the joy of helping the world to hear the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

AUMENTA NUESTRA FE

El pasaje del Evangelio de hoy pertenece a la ca-tegoría llamada “lecciones difíciles” de Jesús. Difíciles de entender, difíciles de aplicar hoy día. La petición de los apóstoles, “aumenta nuestra fe” es en respuesta a la previa “lección difícil” sobre cuántas veces somos llamados a perdonar a los demás. Curiosa-mente, Jesús no parece muy dis-puesto a perdonar al responder a su petición, o al describir la mane-ra en que han de servir a los demás. Jesús usa exageraciones para demostrarnos cómo está Dios presente en nuestra vida, y cómo somos llamados a vivir si Dios está con nosotros. Ninguno de nosotros está llamado a desarraigar árboles o a lanzar montañas al mar. La fe que tenemos es adecuada para la tarea a que hemos sido llamados: esparcir el evangelio con nuestro ejemplo. “Lumen Fidei – La Luz de la Fé”

En los últimos párrafos hemos aprendido como la fe del pueblo de Israel comenzó a desarrollarse. En el párrafo 14 aprendimos como Moisés se convirtió en el mediador entre Dios y el pue-blo. Ellos creyeron en las palabras de Moisés porque sabían que venían de Dios. El los ensenó a ser una comunidad de fe en lu-gar de individuos que adoraban otros dioses. Moisés ayudó al pueblo de Israel a caminar el viaje de la fe hacía un Dios vivo y verdadero. En el siguiente párrafo aprenderemos como este camino de fe nos guiará a la plenitud de la vida Cristiana.

15. « Abrahán […] saltaba de gozo pensando ver mi día; lo vio, y se llenó de alegría » (Jn 8,56). Según estas palabras de Jesús, la fe de Abrahán estaba orientada ya a él; en cierto sentido, era una visión anticipada de su misterio. Así lo entiende san Agustín, al afirmar que los patriarcas se salvaron por la fe, pero no la fe en el Cristo ya venido, sino la fe en el Cristo que había de venir, una fe en tensión hacia el acontecimiento futuro de Jesús[13]. La fe cristiana está centrada en Cristo, es confesar que Jesús es el Señor, y Dios lo ha resucitado de entre los muertos (cf. Rm 10,9). Todas las líneas del Antiguo Testamento convergen en Cristo; él es el « sí » definitivo a todas las promesas, el fundamento de nuestro « amén » último a Dios (cf. 2 Co 1,20). La historia de Jesús es la manifestación plena de la fiabilidad de Dios. Si Israel recordaba las grandes muestras de amor de Dios, que constituían el centro de su confesión y abrían la mirada de su fe, ahora la vida de Jesús se presenta como la intervención definitiva de Dios, la manifestación suprema de su amor por nosotros. La Palabra que Dios nos dirige en Jesús no es una más entre otras, sino su Palabra eterna (cf. Hb 1,1-2). No hay garantía más grande que Dios nos pueda dar para asegurarnos su amor, como recuerda san Pablo (cf. Rm 8,31-39). La fe cristiana es, por tanto, fe en el Amor pleno, en su poder eficaz, en su capacidad de transformar el mundo e iluminar el tiempo. « Hemos conocido el amor que Dios nos tiene y hemos creído en él » (1 Jn 4,16). La fe reconoce el amor de Dios manifestado en Jesús como el fundamento sobre el que se asienta la realidad y su destino último.

Como se podrán dar cuenta el camino de la fe del pueblo de Israel nos guía a la plenitud de la vida Cristiana. Nuestro Señor Jesucristo es la cima de nuestra fe. Los Patriarcas y los profetas del Antiguo Testamento como: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moisés y otros esperaban el día en que podrían conocer al Señor. Ellos le hablaron y se regocijarόn. Ellos experimentaron la palabra eterna de Dios, la cual los guiό a estar en comunión con El. Hemos aprendido por el libro de los Hebreos, que la palabra que Dios habló a los profetas en el Antiguo Testamento como nos habla en estos tiempos, no es simplemente una Palabra entre muchas sino la Palabra eterna de Dios. Jesucristo es la palabra eterna de Dios como San Juan lo menciona en el prolo-go de su Evangelio. Dios nos habla por amor a nosotros para que transformemos nuestras vidas. Cuando amamos a Dios El nos ayuda a amarnos unos a otros para hacer de este mundo un bello lugar donde vivir en armonía y paz. La historia de nues-tro Señor Jesucristo es la revelación plena de la intervención de Dios en la historia de la humanidad.

“Lumen Fidei - On the Light of Faith”

In the last few paragraphs, we learned how the faith of Israel started to develop. In paragraph 14 we learned how Moses became the mediator between God and the people. They believed in the words of Moses because they knew he was sent by God. He taught them to be a community of faith rather than individuals worshiping other Gods. Moses helped the people of Israel to walk the journey of faith in the one true and living God. In the next paragraph, we will learn how this journey of faith will lead us to the fullness of Christian life.

15. "Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day; he saw it and was glad" (Jn 8:56). According to these words of Jesus, Abraham’s faith pointed to him; in some sense it foresaw his mystery. So Saint Augustine understood it when he stated that the patriarchs were saved by faith, not faith in Christ who had come but in Christ who was yet to come, a faith pressing to-wards the future of Jesus.[13] Christian faith is centered on Christ; it is the confession that Jesus is Lord and that God has raised him from the dead (cf. Rom 10:9). All the threads of the Old Testament converge on Christ; he becomes the definitive "Yes" to all the promises, the ultimate basis of our "Amen" to God (cf. 2 Cor 1:20). The history of Jesus is the complete manifestation of God’s reliability. If Israel continued to recall God’s great acts of love, which formed the core of its confession of faith and broadened its gaze in faith, the life of Jesus now appears as the locus of God’s definitive intervention, the supreme manifestation of his love for us. The word which God speaks to us in Jesus is not simply one word among many, but his eternal Word (cf. Heb 1:1-2). God can give no greater guarantee of his love, as Saint Paul reminds us (cf. Rom 8:31-39). Christian faith is thus faith in a perfect love, in its decisive power, in its ability to transform the world and to unfold its history. "We know and believe the love that God has for us" (1 Jn 4:16). In the love of God revealed in Jesus, faith perceives the foundation on which all reality and its final destiny rest.

As we can see in the above paragraph, the journey of faith of the people of Israel leads us to the fullness of Christian life. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the summit of our faith. The Patriarchs and prophets of the Old Testament such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and others were expecting the day that they would be able to meet the Lord. They met Him, spoke to Him and they rejoiced. They experienced the eternal word of God which led them to be in communion with Him. We learn from the book of Hebrews that the word that God spoke to the prophets in the Old Testament as it speaks to us in our times is not simply one Word among many but Gods eternal Word. Jesus Christ is the eternal word of God as St. John mentions in the prologue of his Gospel. God speaks to us out of love to transform our lives . When we love God, he empowers us to love one anoth-er and to make the world a more beautiful place to live in har-mony and peace. The history of our Lord Jesus Christ is the complete revelation of Gods intervention in human history.

YEAR OF FAITH Meditation: “Confessing with the lips” (Romans 10:9) implies that personal faith must express itself in

public witness. A Christian may never think of belief as a pri-vate act. Faith is choosing to “stand with the Lord,” and this demands that we accept the social responsibilities that flow from what we believe (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 10). October opens with “Respect Life Sunday,” and, in this Year of Faith, Jesus’ disciples pray in our name: “Increase our faith.” How comforting is Jesus’ response. Faith cannot be measured by quantity but by quality—faith’s willingness to trust, risk, dare—and when we see a need, to act on it. Jesus saw ten lep-ers and healed them; the Samaritan saw that he was healed and gave thanks, faith transforming his healing into salvation. If God sometimes seems slow to act, like the judge in Jesus’ story, could God be inviting us, who experience Jesus’ self-sacrificing love in the Eucharist, to make God’s work of love and justice our own? October’s final Sunday prepares us for the Year of Faith’s final month with Jesus’ parable of the Pharisee and tax-collector. Though everyone presumed the Pharisee to be faith personified, he was not praying to God at all, just talking to himself. He replaced the praise of God with a litany of self-congratulation, and intercession with judging his neighbor. As the Year of Faith draws to a close, Jesus asks each of us, which of these two are you?

AÑO DE FE Meditación: Profesar “con los labios” (Romanos 10:9) indica que la fe personal implica un testimonio y un compromiso público. El cristiano no puede pensar nunca que creer es un hecho privado. La fe es decidirse a “estar con el Señor”, y esto exige la responsabilidad social de lo que se cree (ver Benedicto XVI, La puerta de la fe, 10). El mes de octubre empieza con el “Domingo de Respeto a la Vida” y en este Año de la Fe los discípulos de Jesús oran en nuestro nombre: “Aumenta nuestra fe”. ¡Y qué consola-dora es la respuesta de Jesús! No se puede medir la fe por la cantidad, sino por la calidad, por las cualidades de la fe de confiar, de arriesgar, de atreverse y cuando vemos una necesidad, la fuerza de actuar sobre ella. Jesús vio a diez leprosos y los sanó; el samaritano vio que había sanado y dio las gracias; por su fe, la sanación se había transformado en la salvación. Si Dios a veces parece actuar lentamente, como el juez en la parábola de Jesús, ¿es posible que nos está invitando a nosotros, a los que experimentamos el sacrificio amoroso de Jesús en la Eucaristía, a hacer nuestra la obra divina del amor y de la justicia? El último domingo de octubre nos prepara para el mes final del Año de la Fe con la parábola de Jesús sobre el fariseo y el recaudador de impuestos. Aunque todos presumieron que en el fariseo estaba la fe personificada, él no oraba a Dios en absoluto; él simplemente se hablaba a sí mismo. Reemplazó la alabanza de Dios con una letanía de auto felicitación e in-tercesiones que juzgaron a su prójimo. Al ir terminando el Año de la Fe Jesús nos pregunta a cada uno de nosotros: “¿Cuál de los dos eres tú?”

True Wealth, True Grit: Faith's Journey Continues

AÑO DE LA FE: AGOSTO DE 2013

Riqueza verdadera, valor verdadero: el camino de la fe continúa

Meditación

Por la fe, muchos cristianos han promovido acciones en favor de la justicia, para hacer concreta la Palabra del Señor, que ha venido

a proclamar la liberación de los oprimidos y un año de gracia para todos (ver Benedicto XVI, La puerta de la fe, 13).

A mediados de agosto celebramos la Asunción de María, la "Estrella de la Nueva Evangelización" del beato Juan Pablo II. El Prefacio para la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María la celebra como la "imagen de la Iglesia" que viene a la perfección. Agradecidamen-te, ella es también "esperanza segura y consuelo" para nosotros, pues los evangelios de agosto ciertamente ofrecen un desafío para los peregrinos en el camino de la fe. ¡Qué distinto es el servicio altruista de María en comparación con el egoísmo del "necio rico" en el Evangelio de Lucas. Aunque su fortuna es el fruto del trabajo honesto y difícil, el "necio" incorrectamente se define a sí mismo y su valor solo en términos de sus posesiones. Pero los discípulos de Jesús deben tener una perspectiva distinta y más pro-funda de la vida, recordando que un día su Maestro regresará de repente. La vigilia por ese momento desconocido nos hará dili-gentes en el servicio de Cristo cuando nos venga diariamente en las necesidades de nuestros prójimos y desconocidos, a quienes tenemos que tratar con reverencia como siervos iguales de Dios. Ser testigos así, a imagen de Jesús, es como jugar con el fuego. Es posible que tengamos experimentar la angustia ardiente de elegir lo que es correcto sobre lo que es fácil, aún a punto de redefinir nuestras relaciones más personales. De ser así, es inútil preguntarse: "¿Quién se salvará?" Es mejor preguntar: "¿Podré seguir yo el camino de la fe fielmente?"

AÑO DE LA FE: SEPTIEMBRE DE 2013 Virtudes para practicar y obstáculos para evitar en el camino de fe Meditación: La fe y el amor se necesitan mutuamente. En efecto, muchos cristianos dedican sus vidas con amor a quien está solo, marginado o excluido, como el primero a quien hay que atender y el más importante que socorrer, porque precisamente en él se refleja el rostro mismo de Cristo (ver Benedicto XVI, La puerta de la fe, 14). El "Año de los Programas" de la parroquia se intensifica justo cuando el "Año de la Fe" de la Iglesia casi termina. Pero la fe, como el papa Benedicto nos ha recordado, es un camino de toda la vida. El Evangelio de los dos primeros domingos de septiembre mandan que abracemos la humildad, el prerrequisito innegociable para la comunión con Dios en la oración y con nuestros prójimos en el servicio de sacrificio personal (ver el Catecismo, 2559, 2631), y que no permitamos que nada impida nuestro seguimiento de Jesús. A mediados de septiembre, el "Domingo de los objetos perdidos" nos pregunta: "¿Es mi retrato de Dios igual al de Jesús?", es decir, ¿es un retrato de un pastor que arriesga todo para salvar una oveja perdida, una mujer que limpia toda la casa para encontrar una moneda perdida, un padre que se olvida de errores pasados y da la bienvenida a su hijo? Si así es, ¿ha hecho este Año de la Fe que yo "parezca" más ese Dios? El último domingo de septiembre, Amós, el "Profeta de Justicia" de Israel, se une con Jesús en avisar-nos sobre los peligros de la riqueza. ¿Tenemos nosotros, los "hijos de la luz", el vivo deseo de servir a otros como los "hijos del mundo" desean servirse a sí mismos? No es suficiente simplemente "no hacer daño". En la parábola de Jesús, el hombre rico no le hizo nada para hacer daño a Lázaro; ¡su pecado fue hacer nada en absoluto! Misión: Cambiar todo lo que contradice la humildad que Jesús espera de sus discípulos; buscar lo que está perdido; perdonar sin condiciones; abrir los ojos para que pueda ver y servir a Cristo en mi prójimo. --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J.
