Steady and consistent improvement is the goal of any athleticsquad, and the Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis team is no different. The Hawks will look to take advantage of a healthy blend of youthand experience to make the 2011-12 season a successful one.

Last season, the squad finished eighth at the Atlantic 10Championship, a step ahead of its ninth-place tie from the previousseason. This year, the Hawks have their sights set on breakingthrough to the league’s upper echelon.

“Our goal is to be as good, if not better,” than last year saidhead coach Ian Crookenden. “That means winning a quarterfinalmatch against one of the top four seeds, and to do that we’re goingto have to be at the top of our games.”

The fourth-year headman also wants to change the perceptionof his squad around the league; with respect comes improvedseeding in the conference championship, but that respect is borneout of success on the court.

“We have to have other coaches start to recognize that we area much stronger team than they give us credit for,” Crookenden said.

In order to do that, SJU will count on the leadership of seniorsPeter Cognetti and Jeff Kessler and junior Tommy Gates to helpguide the influx of young talent both on the court and off.

“There’s a very good atmosphere around the squad,”Crookenden said. “There is no rivalry, aside from a friendly one;there is no divisive element that I’ve seen.”

Junior Alex Veronis will return in the spring from a semesterabroad and will inhabit his customary position in the top singlesflight. Veronis won 10 matches at number-one singles last season, the most for any Hawk at any individual flight.

“After his year last year, I think he knows he can handle thebest that this conference has to offer,” Crookenden said of his topsingles player. “I don’t think he’ll be satisfied with having anythingless than a winning record this year.”

Kessler will remain in the second flight, where he played all ofhis singles matches last season, but after the top two, competitionfor starting slots is wide open.

“We have such a talented squad,” Crookenden explained. “Tomake sure we don’t overlook anybody’s talents and that we usethe players effectively, it’s going to take some time for us to seewho performs well in match play.

“[The younger players] have to realize that it’s not how they doagainst other squad members,” he continued. “It’s how they doagainst the competition, the schools we play against. That’s therecord that counts.”

As for the doubles pairings, Gates and sophomore Dan Barruswill look to forge a successful partnership this season. Crookendenrevealed that seniors Cognetti and Kessler, who have spent a largepart of their time on Hawk Hill teamed up, will likely be playing withdifferent partners this season.

“I’m splitting Jeff and Peter and trying to incorporate some ofthe newer talent we have,” the coach remarked. “Max Montagueis a very talented doubles player and we want to take advantage ofhis talents; if we can blend Peter and Jeff’s experience with someof the fresh face, then we might have a new look when we facesome of our more established opponents.”

Speaking of the Hawks’ opponents, Crookenden has onceagain put together a challenging schedule for his squad.

“The schedule is difficult this year because we’re traveling somuch and our conference matches are very spaced out through theseason,” he explained.

The Hawks will face perennial league power GeorgeWashington and then Duquesne in home indoor matches inFebruary. A pair of matches with league foes Richmond andCharlotte in early March precedes the annual Spring Break trip toOrlando, where SJU will meet up with programs from across thecountry such as Kennesaw State, Creighton, South Dakota State, and Presbyterian.

The switch between indoor courts and outdoor play can be a trickyone, but Crookenden hopes to have his Hawks flying high by then.

“Following our Spring Break trip, we’ll be much better pre-pared for outdoor play, and that’s when the meat of our scheduleis,” he said. “By then we should have some established lineups anddoubles combinations worked out.”

Returning home, the Hawks will face off with conference foesXavier, Fordham, La Salle, Temple, and St. Bonaventure over thecourse of the season’s final month. Saint Joseph’s will also play itscustomary matches with local rivals such as Villanova and Drexel.

The 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship will be held April 13-15 atthe Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. The SaintJoseph’s men’s tennis squad will be there; how long the Hawksstay, and how far they go, is up to them.

If the veteran leaders and young talent can coalesce into thewell-rounded squad that their coach envisions, there’s reason tobelieve that these Hawks can soar to new heights.

Alex Veronis will be SJU’s top-flight singles playeronce again this season. He won 10 matches lasteryear at the top of the Hawk lineup.

Opened in the fall of 2009, the Saint Joseph’s tennis program moved tothe SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. The new Tennis Complexadds six new courts as well as new offices and locker rooms for both thewomen’s and men’s tennis teams. Under head coach Ian Crookenden, SaintJoseph’s has mapped out a plan to extend the program’s reach on campus, regionally and nationally, starting with the Hawks’ new home.

The long-time home of the Episcopal Academy, the 38-acre James J.Maguire Campus adds 52 classrooms, eight full laboratories, 113 offices, and14.5 acres of sports fields to Saint Joseph’s University's 65-acre footprint.

Prior to moving across campus to the new SJU Tennis Complex, theHawks played their matches on Finnesey Courts. Adjacent to Finnesey Field, the Finnesey Courts were home to the Hawk women’s and men’s tennisteams since the late 1940s.

After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to Mandeville Hall’s con-struction, the Finnesey Courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 toprovide a better playing facility for the athletes. The Saint Joseph’s women’stennis team compiled a record of 82-134 on Finnesey Courts from 1983-09.

Saint Joseph’s began competition playing its home matches at the near-by Narberth courts. When courts were first built on campus, they were locat-ed where Bellarmine Hall now stands. Due to Bellarmine’s construction in thesummer of 1960, however, the Finnesey Courts were torn down and rebuiltin their current location.

With the addition of the SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks now offer 10courts and year-round state-of-the-art training facilities for student-athletes.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what isnow the Atlantic 10 Conference was con-ceived. What started as an eight-school,men’s basketball-only affiliation has growninto a 14-university, 21-sport league that isuniversally hailed as one of the best confer-ences in the country.

That growth and prominence is a directresult of the ideals and commitments of themember institutions of the Atlantic 10 - theUniversity of Dayton, Duquesne University,Fordham University, The George WashingtonUniversity, La Salle University, University ofMassachusetts, University of North Carolinaat Charlotte, University of Rhode Island,University of Richmond, St. BonaventureUniversity, Saint Joseph's University, SaintLouis University, Temple University, andXavier University.

The 14 member institutions of the A-10are united and strengthened by their diversi-ty. Each is extraordinary in its educationalmission, whether of a Catholic faith, a privateuniversity or a land grant institution. The var-ied pursuits of each member prove that thereare many threads that weave the fabric for agreat conference.

The presidents and chancellors ofAtlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction withAtlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V.McGlade, have made a strong commitmentto making the academic and athletics equa-tion a successful one. Over the years, theleague membership has strived to better rec-ognize the academic accomplishments of itsstudent-athletes. The Commissioner's HonorRoll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or bet-ter, recognized 1,199 student-athletes in theFall 2009 while 1,181 were named to theSpring 2010 Honor Roll.

The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports andhonors one student-athlete per sport as theA-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduatescholarship grants to qualified student-ath-letes. In 2009-10, nearly 200 student-ath-letes earned Academic All-Conference recog-nition, while Xavier’s Kelly Ruth andCharlotte’s Adam Gross along with LaurenOlson and Whitney Roth of Saint Louisreceived postgraduate scholarship grants.

The Atlantic 10 has 59 of the 841 DivisionI sports teams being honored with publicrecognition awards for their latest multi-yearAcademic Progress Rate scores. This repre-sents an increase of nine A-10 teams fromlast season and 25 two years ago. All 14 A-10institutions had at least one program recog-nized, while twelve schools had multipleteams garner distinction. In addition, all 21sports sponsored by the conference wererepresented by at least one A-10 program.Among the 31 Division I conferences, only theAtlantic 10, the Ivy Group and the PatriotLeague had each of its member institutionsreceive public recognition awards for one ormore programs.

Among the 21 sports sponsored by theconference, women's tennis had a league-high six A-10 teams honored, while five teamsearned distinction in both men’s andwomen’s outdoor track & field and men’sindoor track & field. Overall, Fordham had aleague-best 11 teams recognized in confer-ence-sponsored sports, followed by SaintJoseph’s and Xavier with seven apiece.

The Atlantic 10 also boasts 65 teams witha perfect graduation rate according to theNCAA Graduation Success Report on DivisionI student-athletes. Moreover, five A-10 insti-tutions enjoy average graduation rates of 90percent or higher in league-sponsored sports, led by Dayton's average graduation rate of97.38 percent. The Flyers are followed byGeorge Washington (94.10), Xavier (93.23),La Salle (90.40) and Fordham (90.13). The A-10 features eight women's tennis andwomen's soccer programs that enjoy a 100percent graduation rate, while six men'steams in both golf and tennis have a 100 per-cent graduation rate.

The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a totalpopulation of nearly 74 million people withinits geographic footprint of eight states andthe District of Columbia, will crown champi-ons in 21 sports this season: baseball, men'sand women's basketball, men's and women'scross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women'sindoor and outdoor track & field, women'srowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's vol-leyball.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant

motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto,“The Hawk Will Never Die”.

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At thattime, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name wasappropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive ofthe aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJUfollowing the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55-year history. It has been selected as thenation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall ofFame.

Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is anindependent, Catholic, Jesuit universityteaching disciplined reasoning, effectivecommunication and a love of learning. FromWillings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to StilesStreet in North Philadelphia to its currentlocation on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s hascontinued to grow and change with thetimes. The University combines the Jesuit tra-dition of academic excellence, a history ofservice and an ideal campus location to pro-duce successful students who strive to makea good world even better.

Full-time, undergraduate day enrollmentcomprises approximately 4,600 students.Graduate, evening and executive programspush total enrollment to more than 8,000students.

THE JESUIT TRADITIONOF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized aca-demic reputation is confirmed by ongoingacknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News &World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tra-dition of intellectual inquiry and personalconcern manifests itself in small, challengingclasses taught by a caring faculty. Graduateassistants do not teach, so undergraduatescan be sure they are receiving the very besteducational experience from trained experts.One-on-one interaction between studentsand faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s.

A solid liberal arts curriculum providesacross-the-board learning for every student.Supporting that curriculum are comprehen-sive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that preparesstudents not only for employment and grad-uate school, but for life itself.

In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which hous-es the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, theCenter for Food Marketing and the region'sfirst "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms."An 87,000-square-foot international academ-ic center featuring state-of-the-art distancelearning technology, it is located near thecorner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICEThe students of Saint Joseph’s University

are dedicated to making today’s world evenbetter. A natural spirit of volunteerism hasenabled the University’s community serviceprograms to become the most popularextracurricular activities on campus. In addi-tion, a Service Learning program allows stu-

dents to receive academic credit for theirwork outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and interna-tional opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.;from New Orleans to the AppalachianMountains, Saint Joseph’s students embracethe Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area sen-ior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival forthe handicapped are two annual student-runevents that draw thousands of special visitorsto campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATIONSJU’s City Avenue location combines the

best of dynamic Philadelphia with the subur-ban, residential setting of the elegant MainLine. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two coun-ties, allowing students to literally enjoy thebest of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cul-tural, social and athletic attractions, is easilyaccessible, while the safety, serenity andgreenery of a suburban campus are right athand.

The friendly atmosphere and close-knitcampus ensure that students don’t get lost ineither the literal or the figurative sense atSaint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computerand athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” tothis growing university.

jobs, professional schools and otheradvanced degree programs. Part-time workand internships provide real-world experi-ences, the kind which delight future employ-ers. And with its many diverse student organ-izations, SJU offers ample opportunities toassume leadership positions.
