STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’” JOHN 20:21 Peace—the first gift of the risen Lord. Just as Jesus sent the apostles out into the world to share His peace and Good News, so too, He sends us. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be grateful and generous. We should look for opportunities to share His peace with our brothers and sisters not only within our local parish boundaries, but outside of them as well. In giving, you will receive the peace of Christ.

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER/SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY~ APRIL 3, 2016

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

2017 MASS BOOK OPENS—TUESDAY, APRIL 5

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION —APRIL 6 Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on Wednesday, April 6 in Mary's Chapel in the lower church from 9:00 am-5:00 pm.

CHANGE IN CHILDREN’S CHOIR SCHEDULE The Children’s Choir will be singing next week

(April 10) at the 9:00 am Mass.

This Sunday we continue our Easter rejoicing, which is far too extensive to be experienced on one day alone. The First Letter of Peter has an

eloquent passage that expresses this joy well:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading…. Once you were “no people” but now you are God’s people; you “had not received mercy” but now have received mercy. 1 Pt 1, 3-5; 2, 10.

One of St. John Paul’s most cherished initiatives as Pope was to designate the Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. St. Faustina Kowalska, whose life and spirituality were major influences on him, made that mercy the central focus of her life. And Pope Francis’s jubilee year of mercy, which extends until this coming November 16, has been one of the major gifts of his papacy. Father Richard Veras, the director of formation for New York’s St. Joseph Seminary and a regular contributor to Magnificat’s beautiful and valuable devotional publications, has aptly pointed out that God’s mercy

is not a response to sin; mercy comes before sin. Mercy is God’s initiative. … Mercy is infinitely greater than sin. Mercy proceeds from Eternity, from the heart of the Father. Sin began in time.

No wonder Psalm 118 can say with absolute confidence:

Let those who fear the Lord say, “His mercy endures forever.” I was hard pressed and was falling, but the Lord helped me. My strength and my courage is the Lord, and he has been my savior. Ps 118, 4⦁13-14.

(continued above)

Today at 2:00 Father Roy will lead us in a Divine Mercy afternoon of reflection, at which we will have Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, two brief preached reflections and the opportunity to go to Confession. A plenary indulgence can be gained by those who participate and fulfill the usual conditions for receiving it, namely: being in the state of grace being completely detached interiorly from even venial sins making a Confession receiving the Eucharist praying for the intentions of the Pope.

An indulgence, a benefit that can be ours because of the Church’s bountiful union with Jesus Christ, removes the lingering effects of our previously forgiven sins. It is defined as

A remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints.

We can gain a plenary indulgence for ourselves or for those who have died. Blessed John Henry Newman, the giant of Catholic writing in English in the 19th Century, has a fine prayer that is very suitable to Divine Mercy Sunday:

If I rely on my own strength, I shall make myself my center instead of making you. I shall worship some idol of my own framing instead of you, the only true God and my Maker, unless you hinder it by your grace. O my dear Lord, hear me! I have lived long enough in this undecided, wavering, unsatisfactory state. I wish to be your good servant, I wish to sin no more. Be gracious to me, and enable me to be what I know I ought to be.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY in the Jubilee Year of Mercy

—TODAY, APRIL 3 Saint Joseph Parish will have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the Divine Mercy chaplet and the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, along

with short talks on the Divine Mercy by both Monsignor Hubba and Father Roy Regaspi, TODAY, Sunday, April 3 starting at 2:00 pm in the Upper Church.

A message of divine mercy from Jesus received by St. Faustina Kowalska and recorded in her diary: My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of Mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy.

PRAYER CARDS DONATED BY K of C Be sure to pick up a Divine Mercy prayer card (shown above) in church today while supplies last. It includes the Divine Mercy chaplet. We thank District Deputy Paul Noonan, Grand Knight John Klochan and the Knights of Columbus Council #3814 for the donation of the cards.

FIRST COMMUNION

The Sacrament of First Eucharist will be celebrated on four weekends in April and May: April 16-17, April 24, April 30-May 1, and May 7. First Communicants will be present at the 5:00 pm Mass on the Saturdays and the 10:30 am and 12:30 pm Masses on those Sundays.

MOTHER ANGELICA—1923-2016 Mother Angelica, a nun of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration and founder of the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) died on Easter Sunday at age 92. She started the network as a cable channel in 1981 when she was 58 years old. In 2009 Pope Benedict XVI honored her with the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice award, the highest papal award given to lay people and religious. Though she had to retire from hosting TV programs in 2001 for health reasons, she continued with spiritual devotion, including participating in Eucharistic adoration for several hours each day at the Shrine she established. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. —Kurt Strobach for EWTN

YOUTH GROUP UPDATE This was a very busy and rewarding week for the Saint Joseph Youth Group. On Holy Thursday, we participated in “Cardboard City,” an event that helped the teens understand what it feels like to be “homeless.” (See photos below.) It was a humbling experience. We talked about how easily one could become homeless even though he or she might have a job. The teens were very tired when it was over. On Good Friday, the teens presented the “Shadow” Passion Play. It was a very moving experience. The teens and I want to thank all of you who supported us by coming to the Passion Play. I would also like to thank the teens who worked so hard putting the events together: Erin and Micaela Maron, Catherine O’Toole, Liam Reilly, Catherine Sattely, and Emilie Thomas.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

NEXT WEEKEND The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place next weekend. One way that this appeal works to support home mission dioceses in the United States is by supporting seminarian formation in poor dioceses. The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden

on these dioceses, because educating each seminarian costs $35-40K per year. Your support is needed for these young men so that they might go back and serve their parishes. Please strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to next week’s appeal. You can use your parish envelope or put your check (made out to Saint Joseph) in an envelope marked “Home Missions Appeal.” Thank you for your generosity.

ARCHBISHOP HEBDA REASSIGNED

Archbishop Bernard Hebda, co-adjutor bishop of the Archdiocese of Newark, has been chosen by Pope Francis to head the Archdiocese of Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Though he had been expected to lead the Archdiocese of Newark after Archbishop John Myers’ retirement, he will begin his new assignment in Minnesota on May 13. “I want to extend my deepest gratitude for the support, feedback, and friendship with which I was blessed in the time that I served in the Archdiocese of Newark. I consider myself privileged to have been welcomed into the life of your local Church. Please believe me when I say that I would have been thrilled to serve the rest of my days in the four counties of the Archdiocese and then to await the Lord’s return in the crypt of the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. You have left an indelible impact on my ministry as a priest and bishop and for that I will always be grateful. “While I cannot pretend to understand the reasoning behind my assignment, I have great confidence in Pope Francis and his discernment and I trust that the Lord will bring to Newark precisely the shepherd that you need to lead you forward once Archbishop Myers begins his well-deserved retirement. … “I hope there will be opportunities to express my gratitude to all of you in person before I begin my new assignment … Please know that the Church of Newark will always be in my prayers. … May the Lord richly bless both Archdioceses in this Year of Mercy.” In Christ, Most Reverend Bernard A. Hebda
