THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH ~ DECEMBER 31, 2017
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA —will NOT be celebrated on January 1. It will resume next week, Monday, January 8 at 7:00 pm in upper church.
The arrival of a new year naturally inclines most people to wonder what it will have in store for them. The new year of 1917 began terribly for William Thomas
Turner, captain of the Cunard ship Ivernia, which was torpedoed off the coast of Crete with the loss of 153 of the soldiers and crew it carried. But fortune had been even more unkind to Turner and his passengers on May 7, 1915, when he was captain of the Lusitania, which met the same fate, with 1,198 dying (including 123 Americans) in an incident that propelled our nation to enter World War I. In 19th-century England a young lawyer named Winthrop Mackworth Praed was appointed Secretary for Britain’s Board of Control at the age of 33. He received the post to better prepare him for larger responsibilities that seemed likely to come his way than for any achievements he had made to that point in his life. Sadly, he would die only four years later. Praed was also a poet of minor importance. He wrote the following verses, which are suitable for the ending of this, or any, year: Good-night to the Season!—another Will come with its trifles and toys, And hurry away, like its brother, In sunshine, and odour, and noise. Will it come with a rose or a briar? Will it come with a blessing or curse? Will its bonnets be lower or higher? Will its morals be better or worse? Will it find me grown thinner or fatter, Or fonder of wrong or of right, Or married,—or buried?—no matter,
Good-night to the Season, Good-night! Whatever this year will bring, it will be 2018 A.D., “the year of Our Lord.” He will be present to us throughout its extent, no matter what may happen to
affect us. May your blessings be numerous and great this new year. When we pray “The Lord be with you,” it is with complete confidence that this will be so.
Msgr. David Hubba
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION —JANUARY 3
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on Wednesday, January 3 in Mary's Chapel from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Spend some time with the Lord. The Legion of Mary
invites you to attend.
MASSES FOR SOLEMNITY MARY, MOTHER OF GOD
—JANUARY 1
Because the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God
(January 1) occurs this year on a Monday, it is not observed as a holy day of obligation. Catholics are however encouraged to attend Mass.
There will be only two Masses at Saint Joseph on January 1—1030 am and 12 noon.
A HEARTFELT THANK YOU … to all the many parishioners who contributed to our annual Christmas “Giving Tree” this year. It was a great
success. Because of your generosity, Saint Joseph Parish was able to help a number of organizations make Christmas a little happier for families in need. Almost 500 gifts were received along with close to $3,500 in Shoprite Gift Cards. Gift were delivered to needy families at St. Joseph Church in Jersey City, Covenant House, Catholic Charities, disabled senior residents of the Housing Authority of Linden, NJ and local families in need. A special thank you to Kristen Racine who again organized our efforts for this wonderful project and to committee members Melinda Rabbia, Kelly Fletcher and Jan Burns for all their dedication and hard work.
MANY HANDS Teresa Glenn of our Liturgical Art & Environment Committee would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to our Confirmation candidates and other young people who joined our generous regular helpers to decorate our church for Christmas. Thanks also to Mrs. Arlene Kennedy our Sacraments Coordinator who spread the word. Many hands make light work and we are truly appreciative of them all! We could not do it without you.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “...as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive.”
COLOSSIANS 3:13
Forgiveness—one of the hardest things for people to do. It’s amazing how long we can hold a grudge or be angry with somethone. As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, take this opportunity to give the gift of forgiveness to someone—maybe someone in your family, maybe a friend, maybea co-worker or neighbor or, maybe yourself. Pick up the phone or text someone right now.

PRAYER FOR “WORLD DAY OF PEACE”
—JANUARY 1 To the Queen of Peace,
the Mother of Jesus Christ "our peace" (Eph 2:14),
I entrust my urgent prayer for all humanity at the beginning of the year . . . to which we look with hearts full of hope, notwithstanding the dangers and difficulties that surround us. May Mary show us, in her Son, the Way of peace, and enlighten our vision, so that we can recognize Christ's face in the face of every human person, the heart of peace!
