In Memoriam—Fr. Joseph Mary Marshall, S.M. by Fr. Dave McGuigan, S.M., Associate Pastor

I lived with Joe Marshall in our Marianist community in Cambridge, MA and Allston, MA from 1993 to 1997. During that time, our leadership, at the time the Provincial Council of the NY Province of the Society of Mary, asked Joe and I to try to find a ministry involvement in the Archdiocese of Boston. So, we pounded the pavement until we landed an interview with the director of the archdiocesan campus ministry office and were each hired: Joe became the Catholic chaplain at Brandeis University, a famous school with a predominantly Jewish student population, and I held the same position at Bentley College, renowned for its accounting program; both campuses were in Waltham, MA. Fr. Joe earned great respect at Brandeis for the quality of his ministry and ecumenical respect and sensitivity. As Joe was ordained, he helped me with sacramental ministry at Bentley. Our collaboration was mutually supportive, fraternal and easygoing. I enjoyed Marianist community life with Joe. His example of commitment to prayer, and devotion to our Blessed Mother were helpful to me during those early years of my religious life. Joe could be great fun! His sense of humor was lively and simple, and he had a down-to-earth way of enjoying many things from a walk to a movie, a play, a pizza, a concert, or lecture. He enjoyed the changing seasons, both in the Church and of the year. Once we went to a shrine in the Boston area that was lit up for the Christmas season; I couldn’t keep up with him—he was like a child—as he enjoyed the lights and people. He not only enjoyed festive atmosphere, he could create it, too. Joe had a keen Catholic sensibility for the connection between ordinary and sacred. I spent time with Joe’s family and I know that he loved his parents and siblings, and their children, very much. With his Marianist brothers Joe was transparent about God’s presence in his life and I know he had a deep experience of himself as a son of Mary in union with Christ. I would say this was a great grace for Joe and the inspiration for his identity as a religious and a priest. I have a clear recollection of Joe sharing with me the Scripture passage that guided his ministry to God’s people, Isaiah 42:3, “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench.” Joe knew the healing mercy of God in his own life, and he was committed to being an agent of divine mercy for others. Later on, when Joe left St. Joseph’s and MD, for San Antonio, TX, I saw him, rarely. He did return, when he could, to spend some time with the Marianist community and reconnect with dear friends he had made in the parish during his years of ministry, here. I spent a little time with him on his most recent and final visit, and he shared his experience of living with cancer, his hope for healing, finding deeper faith and union with Christ in his suffering, and his desire to continue to serve as long as he could. The physical toll of his illness was obvious to me. Joe had been my height if not slightly taller, but now he was shorter than I and wearing a brace to support his spine. But, his connection to God in all of this was obvious, too. Nearing the end of his earthly journey, for Fr. Joseph Mary Marshall, S.M., stature was not a matter of height but depth. May he rejoice in the Lord’s house, forever.

Many parishioners will remember Father Joe from his time here at Saint Joseph Catholic Community. Father Joe was “called to his everlasting dwelling place with the saints, at the age of 61 with 30 years of religious profession. He died on December 28, 2015 in San Antonio, Texas. Let us thank God for the gift of his life; let us thank Mary our Mother for his gift of perseverance. Together, let us pray that he may rest in the peace of Christ.” Martin A. Solma, S.M., Provincial Society of Mary

Pray Our Faith

If you or a member of your family is homebound or is in a nursing home nearby and desires communion, a pastoral visit or Sacrament of the Sick, please contact Biji James at [email protected] or 443-920-9107. The Sacrament of the Sick can be celebrated in the office prior to serious surgery. For celebrations of the Sacrament of the Sick in emergency situations only which require the presence of a priest, please call 443-920-9111. The names of sick parishioners may be added to the Sunday Eucharist Mass Prayers of the Faithful by calling the parish office. The names of non-parishioners will be added to the prayer list in the bulletin for a limited time.

Many Thanks! Parishioners of St. Joseph’s, you have made this Christmas wonderful for many many individuals and families through your generous donations of gifts and monetary donations. We’ll tell you all about it in next weekend’s bulletin!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Jesus shares in Matthew 25:34- 40, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me. Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothed you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ If you are interested in visiting and bringing communion to those in our community who are unable to come to Mass, please contact Biji James at 443-920-9107 or [email protected].

GREETER MINISTRY Our Greeter program has been very successful since we started in February, 2014, so we are planning to include the 5:00 Mass on Saturday beginning the end of January. We need volunteers who would be willing to participate. There will be a sign-up sheet at the information desk and an introduction for all the greeters on Sunday, January 17th at 1:00. Come find out what is involved, meet others who have been serving and have some refreshments too. Please call Diane Bastress (410-303-5383) or email ([email protected]) or Virginia McNicholas (410-795-4165) or email ([email protected]).

Can you Sew? We will be sewing basic fire-retardant rod-pocket draperies for Catholic Charities’ HeadStart pre-school facility in Carroll County. These draperies are required for them to remain open. If you could offer to sew some basic panels with a group of parishioners putting this effort together, please contact Barbara Young at 410-795-0181. Arrangements can be made to sew here at St. Joseph’s or in your own home. Please help if you can!

Please welcome the newest members to our community: Cameron Scott, son of Kent and Cara Schrack; Jakob Simon, son of Lars-Kristian and Christin Hinrichsen; Eleanor Jane, daughter of Matthew and Jennifer Taylor; Emmett Charles, son of Keith and Melanie Greenway; Gerald Benjamin, son of Benjamin and Rebecca DeMouy; Taryn Ainsley, daughter of Stephen and Christianne Harrell; and Christopher Joseph, son of Christopher and Jessica Felix, Nicholas Brian, son of Hailey and Brian Fuhr.

Interested in becoming Catholic Consider the RCIA, Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. The RCIA consists of a series of sessions, a spiritual journey for someone wishing to join our faith community. To acquire a fuller understanding of what it means to be Catholic, we first require those interested to attend the pre-catechumenate formation period. This period consists of twelve monthly meetings throughout the course of the liturgical year. Core foundational beliefs and church tradition are examined. Once completed, our journey continues in the weekly Catechumenate sessions that culminate with your full initiation into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil Mass. The next Pre-Catechumenate session will be held on Wednesday, February 3rd at 7:00pm in Room 11. To begin, contact Fr. Dave, 443-920-9130, [email protected] or the Andersons at 410-848-4030.

Thank you to all the parishioners who so

generously contributed to our worship environment

during the Advent & Christmas seasons. On

Saturday morning, January 23, a mass will be offered for the intentions of the

donors. Again, thank you to all those, whose

contributions add so much to maintaining the beauty

of our worship environment.

Feast of the Baptism of the Lord January 9/10, 2016

In today’s reading from the Gospel of Luke we hear the proclamation of the baptism of Jesus with “all the people.” Indeed, “heaven was opened,” and the Father announced his special favor. Whenever we partake of the body and blood of Christ, heed his call in our daily lives, share his Good News, become instruments of his transforming justice and peace, heaven is opened to us, and through the Holy Spirit, the Lord announces his special favor on us as well. A good stewardship reflection this week might be this: How, or in what ways, have we personally experienced God’s special favor in our lives?

Protecting Our Earth “The different phenomena of environmental degradation and natural catastrophes, which unfortunately occur all too often, remind us of the urgency of dutiful respect toward nature, recovering and valuing a correct rela-tionship with the environment each day.” Pope Benedict XVI, August 26, 2009 Did you know? Since July 2011, polystyrene foam (“Styrofoam”) recycling has been available in Carroll County at the Northern Landfill Recycling Center in Westminster. To be accepted for recycling, the foam must bear the “6” symbol with “chasing arrows” in parentheses. Polystyrene items accepted include foam cups, plates, take-out containers, egg cartons, as well as shaped or molded foam often used to package electronics.

This site will divert foam and allow it to be recycled into new products. There’s no limit to how much can be brought by the public as long as it is clean. Once it’s dropped off, it will be picked up and taken to a recycling plant in Pennsylvania, where it is reprocessed and sold to manufacturers that make new products such as picture frames and moldings, office desk products, building insulation, and other consumer goods.

Please: Place foam in a clear or translucent bag Make sure that it has the “6” symbol Rinse cups and food containers to remove food Make sure there are no liquids in containers

Do not bring: Foam packaging peanuts accepted at many retail shipping outlets Straws, lids, tape or stickers Foam insulation material Clamshell or non-foam #6 containers

To Celebrate 150 Years is a Big Deal! St. Joseph Parish, Sykesville, was founded in 1868, and so in two years’ time, we will be rolling out a year of commemorations and, I hope, memorable parties. Our community today is built on the faith, the stewardship, and the struggles of many who lived in this area in the past. It is necessary to be aware of their lived reality. The experi-ences and the stories of how they lived their faith will honor them, and will also help us to grow in how we live our own faith. Knowing the story and history of our local faith com-munity will help us to be clear about what is essential in our faith. I am seeking to gather a number of people who will help build a memory bank. If you are interested in gathering history, stories and images, please consider being available for this foundational component of our 150th anniversary. Archivists, librarians, students of sociol-ogy or the history of the church are invited to contact me so we can discuss meeting within four weeks to lay out how to gather, store and present the history of our faith community. Fr. Neville O’Donohue, SM Pastor
