The holidays are upon us! It is so easy to raise money for the school, as well as save money off your sus-taining fee for next school year, just by purchasing SCRIP cards. Buying SCRIP cards now is a great way to begin to budget for the holidays and the expense that can come with it. Don’t have a family in school? Just pick a family or donate to a ‘Family in Need’. Our SCRIP sales to date are $247,500 with a profit of $7,274. So far this year we have sold almost $35,000 less than this time last year, so if you have the need for gift cards, we have the inventory for you! Once again, thanks so much for all your support of the program!

Age 70 ½ or older with an RMD from an IRA? Did you know that federal law allows tax free charitable distributions from your IRA? Charitable taxpayers who are age 70½ or older can direct “qualified charitable distributions” from their fund administrator directly to the charities of their choice, including one’s parish, school, or the parish capital cam-paign. This distribution may result in tax savings even if you are unable to itemize your deductions. For more infor-mation about how you can benefit from an IRA charitable distribution, please contact your IRA administrator or tax pre-parer.

Reminder: If you have misplaced your pledge card for the capital campaign, there are cards and envelopes available in the vestibule of church for your use. Also, information and forms for the capital campaign are available on the parish website, under “renovation.” Progress reports regarding the renovation project will be updated regularly on the website.

The annual Missouri Catholic Conference Annual Assembly is being held at Helias Catholic High School on Octo-ber 6, 2018. The keynote speaker will be Bishop Perry, who is in charge of the canonization effort for Fr. Tolton. He spoke to the diocesan priests last spring and has a good message for us, especially in light of our honoring Fr. Tolton by dedicating our newest diocesan high school to him. Please consider attending this event, and encourage your school faculty, advisory councils, school and parish families to attend. The MCC is the lobbying arm of the bishops in Mis-souri and it is good for those of us who educate future Catholic citizens to be aware of what their bishops see as priori-ties in the current political landscape.

According to the Missouri Department of Social Services, in Fiscal Year 2017 there were 1,132 substanti-ated incidents of child sexual abuse in Missouri involving 1261 children, 214 of whom were in the counties of our diocese. You can help prevent this from happening and ensure that our parishes, schools and homes are safe places for all children. The Diocese of Jefferson City will hold a VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Chil-dren class on Tuesday, September 4, at 6:30 p.m. at Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary church, Vien-na. Participants must register in advance at www.virtus.org. Please arrive early so that the class may begin on time. Due to the nature of the subject, children are discouraged from attending. This program is one com-ponent of the overall effort to protect God’s children and vulnerable adults. All employees and volunteers with ongoing and unsupervised contact with children and youth are required to attend a Protecting God’s Children session. All parents, grandparents and other adults in the parish community are en-couraged to attend. To view valuable resources regarding the protection of children and vulnerable adults, please go to https://diojeffcity.org/child- and-youth-protection-2/, www.virtus.org or the USCCB’s website at http://www.usccb.org/issues- and-action/child-and-youth- protection/index.cfm.

St. Joseph School News

We are off to a great start! It is great to have the students back and everyone in a routine. Grandparents’ day has been set for Friday, October 5, in the afternoon. More details to come at a later time. We still have several staff members that are in need of adoption. If you would like to adopt a staff mem-ber, please see below for more details. Requirements of adopting a staff member:

1. Pray for them. Pray for help, guidance, and peace as they perform their jobs. Pray for their families, health, safety, etc. 2. Send encouraging notes, letters, small pick me ups, supplies for classroom, etc. It does not need to cost much, if anything.

Please contact me (Tammy Ogden) at [email protected] (preferred) and put ‘adopt a staff member’ in the memo line, or call school and leave a message for me at 455-2339. Have a blessed week! Mrs. Ogden

Memorial Garden Dedication

In 2016, the school desired to have an outdoor classroom. At the same time, the family of Paul (Arty) Luebbering desired to dedicate a memorial to him. The two desires came together and the Outdoor Classroom and Memorial Garden was established. Soon after, the families of Ed and Marie Stuckenschneider, Norman Kloeppel, Joe Massman, Lonnie and JoAnn Nilges con-tributed memorial funds to bring the project into existence. With multiple contributions of funds and materials from businesses and private parties along with numerous volunteers, the Outdoor Classroom and Memorial Garden is at a stage for everyone to enjoy. There is a walking path with Stations of the Cross and a classroom area with amphitheater seating and benches. A weather vane and sun dial have been installed for science instruction and, with more fundrais-ing, raised beds are in the future so students can grow flowers and vegetables. THERE WILL BE A DEDICATION AND BLESSING OF THE OUTDOOR CLASSROOM AND MEMORIAL GARDEN ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, at 6:15, after the 5:00 Mass. Please plan to attend and pay tribute to the new addition to our parish and to the school staff and families who made it possible.
