STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “For you do not know on which

day your Lord will come.” MATTHEW 24:42

People who have had health issues or near-death experiences

generally have a greater appreciation for each day being a gift from God. The rest of us usually take for granted that we will be around tomorrow. But when you start to look at each day as a gift, you realize all the little miracles that happen daily and grow in gratitude for all that we have been given.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ NOVEMBER 27, 2016

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

TAKE A TAG SHARE THE BLESSINGS

OF CHRISTMAS

What better way to prepare our homes and hearts for Christmas than to share the blessings and joys of that holy season with those in need.

Our Giving Trees, an Advent tradition at Saint Joseph Parish, is located in the main entrance of the Church and at the Harrison Street entrance. Please take a tag from the Giving Tree, purchase the requested gift and then place the wrapped gift, with tag attached, under the tree the next time you come to Mass. The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping for whom the gift is meant. It is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas. All Giving Tree Gifts need to be returned no later than Monday, December 12.

Our new year of Catholic worship starts today, even as the minutes of daylight continue to diminish over the next three weeks. I like the

way Thomas J. O’Gorman puts it:

Advent summons us to the beginning. The lavishness of God’s compassion and mercy frame yet another year for us. With the arrival of Advent’s first Sunday, we attend to this mystery one more time.

During what is probably the most hectically paced few weeks of the year, the Church offers us the opportunity of receiving the graces of a season that prepares us to meet Jesus in fresh strength. As we get ready to celebrate Christmas, we are invited once again to stir within ourselves a deeper longing for Christ, whose saving help we admit we absolutely need and whose presence in our daily living we know to be important beyond any other consideration. And, with the Church, we furthermore expect the Lord’s future coming, which will complete his work in the maturity of time. John Henry Newman expressed all of this superbly in one of the sermons he preached before he became a Catholic. His great biographer, Ian Ker, notes how powerfully Newman’s preaching influenced those who heard it, even though he spoke with none of the oratorical embellishments we normally expect eloquence to use: “the sermons were read, with hardly any change in the inflexion of the voice and without any gesture on the part of the preacher, whose eyes remained fixed on the text in front of him.” Newman said this:

They watch for Christ who are sensitive, eager, apprehensive in mind, who are awake, alive, quick-sighted, zealous in honoring him, who look for him in all that happens, and who would not be surprised, who would not be over-agitated or overwhelmed, if they found that he was coming at once….

This then is to watch: to be detached from what is present, and to live in what is unseen; to live in the thought of Christ as he came once and as he will come again; to desire his second coming, from our affectionate and grateful remembrance of his first.

If we let it be so for us, Advent can be a powerful and beautiful time for prayer. May all of us awaken to its great potential.

Msgr. David Hubba

LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH Lord, our God,

we praise You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, for He is Emmanuel,

the Hope of all people. He is the Wisdom that teaches

and guides us. He is the Savior of us all.

O Lord, let your blessing come upon us as we light the first (purple) candle of this wreath.

May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ's promise of salvation.

May He come quickly and not delay. We ask this in His holy name. Amen.

Looking for a special gift? Or a way to remember a loved one? Or something to record a special event (birth, Baptism, First Communion, Marriage) in the life of your family? Your brick can be placed in front of the saint of your choice. The donation for each brick is $125. Pick up an order form in the literature racks in the church or in the parish office/rectory and return it to 105 Harrison St., New Milford. Engraved bricks will be installed in the spring. Can you find Monsignor Hubba in one of these photos from our very successful Fellowship Breakfast held last Sunday? (Hint: He’s deep in conversation!)

Saint Joseph Parish extends a warm thank you to Kristen Verrier and her team of volunteers from our Religious Education program for hosting our first

Fellowship Breakfast this past Sunday. Over 100 parishioners stopped by after the 10:30 am Mass for some delicious food and a chance to reconnect with old friends and make some new ones. There were even activities and games for the children. What a great way to wind up our liturgical year and to get ready for the new one that begins this Sunday with the start of Advent!
