Obedience! What does being obedient mean to you? Aren’t dogs obedient to their masters? Weren’t slaves supposed to be obedient to their owners? Aren’t children supposed to be obedient to their parents? We thought wives were supposed to be obedient to their husbands, but that changed quickly. Isn’t the priest supposed to be obedient to his bishop and the Religious Brother or Sister supposed to be obedient to their superiors?
I think if you ask most people, being obedient is NOT something that we look forward to or even want to be a part of in our lives, and yet God calls us to be obedient to Him. So how does that actually work for us? Well, the first step is change. Today’s Readings talk about change and a Covenant. Are you looking for change in your life?
In the Covenant God made with Abraham, He made him three promises; an heir, a people as “numerous as the stars” and a Promised Land. Abraham had his own plan to make his servant his heir because he was so old.
He thought he knew better than God. But God had a different plan for him, even in his old age. This Reading is very interesting because Abraham is brought out of the tent by God to: “Look up into the heavens and count the stars if you are able.” When I first read this passage, I thought that Abraham looked up and counted and counted and counted as many stars as he could. However, if you read further in this passage (in vv. 12 and 17), we hear how: “The sun began to go down.” This means that most likely, the sun was out when Abraham looked up into the heavens. So, what did he see? Nothing! But were the stars still there? Absolutely! And here is the important part, Abraham still believed and trusted in God even though he did not see the stars with his own eyes. Maybe that is what Jesus meant after Doubting Thomas would not believe until he saw the nail marks on Jesus’ body for himself, when Jesus said: “Blessed are those who have not seen and still believe” (John 20:29). This is why Abraham becomes our “Father in the faith!”
It was because of his unwavering faith and trust in God that Abraham’s life did indeed change. So, it is for us as well. Faith can and will change us if we allow it to happen, if we are open to God’s Will, if we are obedient to His plan.
In today’s Second Reading, we find out that Jesus is not “against us” but “for us!” He wants to change our lives, not for the sake of change, but for the sake of salvation. Not to make our lives miserable, but joyful. Not to give us a list of don’ts and shouldn’ts, but a life of service and peace.
Finally, in the Gospel, we see Jesus on Mount Tabor in Galilee, with Peter, James and John, where they meet Elijah and Moses. This must have been such an
amazing moment for them because they hear the voice of the Father saying: “This is my beloved Son, listen to Him.” This is the same voice they heard at the Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. So, what were they talking about?
Jesus was talking about His Exodus, which will begin in Jerusalem. We know this makes sense because even Peter says: “Let us make three tents” (or a better translation is “three booths”), reminding him of the Festival of the Booths (Sukkot in Hebrew), which the Jews celebrated when they were coming out of the desert, being freed from Egypt, when they lived in temporary tents (booths) waiting on the Lord.
So, what does this Transfiguration say to us today? If Jesus is talking about His Exodus, which will begin in Jerusalem, then He is talking about the Paschal Lamb because He is that Paschal Lamb, that Passover Lamb! He is the one who will be sacrificed for our sins. Unlike Abraham, who at the end of the day, did not have to sacrifice his only son, God the Father did. He gave us Jesus and did not replace Him with a “ram caught by its horns in the thicket,” but the very life of His Only-Begotten Son. This is the most precious gift our heavenly Father gave to each and every one of us.
It was at the Last Supper that Jesus gave Himself to us. It is in the Eucharist that we find the biggest change in our lives. We are changed by God’s Word as we listen to the Holy Scriptures in the Liturgy of the Word. We are changed by the Eucharist as we receive the Lord Himself in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. But today is not just learning about Passover, the Festival of Booths or even the different parts of the Mass. More importantly, it is about giving ourselves to God, to trusting in Him and to being obedient to His Will in our lives. And it is by this obedience that He can change your life and mine as well. Lent is a time for us to be alone with God so we can hear this voice so that He can really change our lives.
Today, at this altar, God changes bread into Jesus’ holy body and changes a chalice filled with simple wine into the Precious Blood of Jesus. If you let Him, He will also change your life into His life. If you let Him, your life can become better, more whole and yes, even holy. So, are you ready to trust? Are you ready to believe? Are you ready to change? Are you ready to be obedient? Because if you are, then you will truly be ready to: “Walk before the Lord, in the land of the living” (Psalm 116). “This is my beloved Son, listen to Him!” So, let us take a few moments and do just that!

LENTEN TRIVIA answers
Days of Abstinence: No meat may be eaten on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays in Lent and Good Friday for all those who are 14 years or older. (This does not end at age 60).
Days of Fast: A limit of one full meatless meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (for all who are 18-60 years old).
Weekdays of Lent: There is no obligation to fast. However, voluntary acts of self-denial are always a great way to be more involved during Lent.
Easter Duty Obligation: Every Catholic must receive Holy Communion and go to confession between the First Sunday in Lent and Trinity Sunday.
Acts of Devotion: are encouraged on a voluntary basis. These may include spiritual study, Lenten Devotions, the Rosary, Stations of the Cross and deeds of mercy and kindness. Of course, the greatest prayer and to receive the greatest fruits of the Lenten season is by participating in daily and Sunday Masses.
Eucharistic Fast: You should fast one hour from foods and liquids. (Water and medicine are exceptions to this fast).
Here are the Lenten trivia answers to last week’s trivia questions:
11. Hot Cross Buns 12. St. Patrick 13. Palm Sunday 14. The entrance into Jerusalem 15. Tuesday of Holy Week 16. 14 17. 3 18. Simon of Cyrene 19. At sundown on Holy Thursday before the beginning of the Mass of the Last Supper 20. “Triduum” comes from the Latin word for three, and it includes the three holiest days of the Church year from sundown on Holy Thursday, through Good Friday and Holy Saturday, to sundown on Easter Sunday.

PROCESSIONAL “Return to God”
R. Return to God with all your heart, the source of grace and mercy; Come seek the tender faithfulness of God. Now the time of grace has come, the day of salvation; come and learn now the way of our God. R. I will take your heart of stone and place a heart within you, a heart of compassion and love. R. PSALM RESPONSE “Lord, you have the words of everlasting life.”
OFFERTORY “Change Our Hearts”
R. Change our hearts this time, Your word says it can be. Change our minds, this time, Your life could make us free. We are the people Your call set apart, Lord, this time change our hearts.
Brought by Your hand to the edge of our dreams. One foot in paradise, one in the waste. Drawn by Your promises, still we are lured by the shadows and the chains we leave behind. But... R. Now as we watch You stretch out Your hands, off’ring abundances, fullness of joy. Your milk and honey seem distant, unreal, when we have bread and water in our hands. But R. Show us the way that leads to Your side, over the mountains and sands of the soul. Be for us manna, water from stone, light which says we never walk alone. And R. COMMUNION “Jesus, the Lord”
R. Jesus. Jesus. Let all creation bend the knee to
the Lord. In Him we live, we move and have our being; in Him the Christ, in Him the King! Jesus, the Lord. R.
Though Son, He did not cling to Godliness; but emptied Himself, became a slave! Jesus, the Lord. R.
He lived obediently His Father’s Will, accepting His death, death on a tree! Jesus, the Lord. R.
RECESSIONAL “Tantum Ergo Sacramentum”

Lenten PRAYER
Of saint Ephrem
O Lord and Master of my life
Keep me from the spirit of
indifference and discouragement,
Lust of power and idle chatter.
Instead, grant to me your servant,
The spirit of wholeness of being,
Humble mindedness,
patience and love.
O Lord and king,
Grant to me the grace
to be aware of my sins
and not to judge my
brother and sister:
for you are blessed
now and ever
and forever.
Amen.
PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL Saint Michael, the Archangel
defend us in battle; be our defense against
the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do You, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan
and the other evil spirits who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. -Pope Leo XIII (1864)
