THE APOSTLE Catholic Community
It is difficult to imagine that we soon will be drawing the curtain on another school year here at St. John the Apostle. The middle of May means there are but a few weeks left in our academic year. As we get ready to say goodbye to our graduating 8th graders, and welcome new families to our school in September, we take a moment to reflect on a wonderfully successful 2017-2018 school year.
The Blessed Sacraments: There are many reasons why families choose our school, but perhaps the single biggest reason is so young people can receive their sacraments. This insures that our common core Catholic values will be instilled in our students from a very young age. To that end, we would like to congratulate our 2nd graders who made their First Holy Communion on April 15th. We would also like to congratulate our 8th grade students who made their Confirmation on April 24th and May 1st. These young people are now equipped with a spiritual foundation that will guide them throughout their educational journeys.
Graduation: On Thursday, June 7th 39 students will be graduating from St. John the Apostle School. The graduation ceremony will take place at 7:00, but in reality it will be a daylong celebration. The day will begin with a Baccalaureate Mass at 8:30, followed by a Communion Breakfast, hosted by our 7th grade class. It will be a worthy sendoff to a group of students who have contributed so much to our school community throughout the years. We wish all of our soon to be graduates the best of luck as they transition on to their high school careers.
Parent Faculty Guild: We would like to thank our Parent Faculty Guild for all of their amazing efforts throughout the school year. This group of dedicated parents seemingly never stops working. Our PFG engages in fundraising efforts all year long in order to keep tuition costs manageable. In recent weeks we had our spring clothing drive, calendar raffle, Mother’s Day plant sale, and of course, our annual gift auction. As expected, these fundraisers were wonderfully successful. We thank our board members as well as all the volunteers who made these initiatives so profitable. We would not be able to operate our school as efficiently as we do without your assistance. We also are seeking volunteers to join our PFG for September. If interested, please visit our website.
Enrollment: We currently have 440 students from grades Pre K through eight enrolled for the 2018-2019 school year. St. John the Apostle continues to boast one of the largest student bodies in the Archdiocese of Newark.
Baseball Fever: On Friday evening June 8th our Schola Choir will be performing at Citi field before the subway series game between the New York Mets and the New York Yankees. Our students will have an opportunity to show off their big league talent! We know you will represent us well.
School’s out for summer: Our last day of school will be Friday, June 15th. We hope our students enjoy a restful and fun filled summer recess. You’ve earned it!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our faculty and staff for the outstanding service they have provided to our students this year. Your passion for teaching and your commitment to Catholic Education are deeply appreciated. Our students are better because of your service to our school. Thank you for all you do for our school and Parish community.
May God Bless You,
Dr. Deborah Egan

Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit… Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, Preacher to the Papal Household wrote: “The Holy Spirit is the love of God. Within the Trinity, he is the flame of love going from the Father to the Son, and from the Son to the Father…To say that the apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit means that they were filled with the love of God…Pentecost was the moment when each of the apostles had the overwhelming experience of being loved by God. ” How do we know that the Holy Spirit is present and in action? The answer is found in St. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians: … the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self control. When we see these fruits, we know that the Holy Spirit is at work within us. “To be holy is to live according to the gospel…it is the ever present challenge to be a people of heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience and forgiveness. It is a call to embrace the beatitudes…it is an invitation to bring a heightened sense of the presence of Jesus Christ
into the regular rhythms of life: going to school, or work, raising a family, and participating in civic life.” (The United States Catholic Bishops) The “work” of the Holy Spirit is to make us holy, to sanctify us…so we may produce the fruits that St. Paul describes. Come Holy Spirit! God bless us all always! Deacon Mike
