“Rend the Heavens and Come Down”
When I was a child my mother spent a lot of time in the hospital. Her absence from our home was felt in a thousand little ways. We were always well taken care of. We had meals on the same
strict schedule that we always followed. Somebody was around to care for us. My father spent extra time helping us with our daily struggles and problems. The bills got paid, life ran according to a regular and unchanging schedule just like when my mother was there, but something was missing. Things were more than normally serious, and it seems that just around the corner or just out of sight something was the matter. I felt a vague anxiety lurking in the shadows and hanging over the normal events of our life. After we were sent to
bed at our normal 8:30 bedtime, my brother, with whom I shared a bed, and I would talk in the dark. We had to whisper, because we were supposed to be sleeping, but there were important things to discuss, and they could only be whispered in the night. We tried to figure out when my mother would return to us. She might be weak or have to stay in bed much of the time, but her return would mark a new and happier day in our home. Our trust that she would come home gave us hope that the shadowy worry hanging about our lives would disappear and that her mere presence would lift the heaviness that hung around our house. Our whispers filled our hearts with light in the middle of the night and our hopes lit the dark corners of our worry and uncertainty.
I am now much older, but lately I have been surprised that those vague feelings of worry and sense that something is wrong have been plaguing my thoughts. We have worries about the Middle East, about nuclear programs in countries we don’t trust, about the horrific deeds of terrorists against innocent people. The weather and the darkness make us feel uncertain about where things are going. We feel anxiety lurking in the corners of our lives and just out of sight something we are afraid of seems to be taking shape. Like the people that the prophet Isaiah speaks to we seem to be stuck in the shadows and overcome by life. Like my childhood self we are looking for things to be set right, and with the prophet cry out, “Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down.”
This Advent season we huddle together in the growing dark to hear words of hope. Alone in the great and shadowy world we hear the words of Isaiah as a promise that God has heard us and will soon be with us. Together let us accompany Isaiah to the heights and proclaim God’s comfort to the world.

Celebrating Advent This holy season invites us to slow down, take a breath and spend some time in the quiet and calm. Unfortunately, the rest of the world is shifting into high gear. The demands of the Christmas season can seem overwhelming at times, and often urge us to hurry up. We invite you to create quiet moments in the midst of your preparation, and we offer these suggestions:
Suggestions for Observing the Season • Use the “Word Among Us,” books we distributed to read each day’s readings from Mass. Spend
five minutes letting the Lord speak to you each day. • Use the “A Season of Fierce and Hidden Beauty,” guides to the Sunday Mass readings by Fr.
Tony to prepare yourself to hear the Word of God on Sunday. • Continue or establish the tradition of using an Advent Wreath and the accompanying prayers with
your family. There are many prayer suggestions online for Advent wreath prayers. Just type “Advent Wreath Prayers” in your search engine and you will have many to choose from.
• Pray the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary with your family to reflect on the coming of the Lord. • Take five minutes a day doing absolutely nothing. Just sit, breathe and relax. Waiting is a part of
Advent’s discipline, and sitting quietly at this time of year is harder than you think. • Examine your life and take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for
receiving the Lord at Christmas.

THE RE CONNECTION: It’s hard to believe that with the ‘ol flip of the calendar on Monday we will be eye to eye with December…winding down an aging year as we have begun a new liturgical one. The myriad of ways that time is being marked right now gets the kiddos a bit confused. Heck, it doesn’t help matters any that they have been bombarded with Christmas campaigns on the airwaves pretty much since the porch lights were turned down on Halloween. Our catechists have their work cut out for them as they help to focus the kiddos’ attention on preparing, and readyin’ that ‘ol way of the Lord. In a few weeks, they will be making their annual trek to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. So, if you wouldn’t mind doing us Wednesday Nighters a favor, should you cross paths with a kiddo this month, please relate to them the importance that Reconciliation has had in your life, and the many comforts it has brought you. As the varied marks of time march on, may you each enjoy a very profound and fruitful Advent.

A NEW TASK FOR THE AFC PRAYER CHALLENGE: The season of Advent is a time of preparation for the coming of the Lord. The Blessed Virgin Mary is an example for our cooperation for bringing salvation to birth in the world. We have tried to make praying for the faithful departed and giving thanks to God at meal time a part of our prayer lives. Our next challenge is to gather your family to pray the rosary using the Joyful Mysteries. These mysteries help us to reflect on the events leading up to the birth of Jesus. If you need help with learning these prayers we have prayer books that our young people use to learn their prayers available for $1.50 in each parish office. Hopefully praying for the faithful departed has become a regular part of your daily prayer.
ST. PIUS X SCHOOL CHRISTMAS TREE SALES: St. Pius X School is selling Christmas trees in the parking lot of Coborn’s. This fund raiser will get you one of the nicest trees around, and help support Catholic education. Please think of St. Pius X School first when buying your Christmas tree this year. The hours of the stand are listed on the school page.
PARENTS OF GRADE SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN: Children in Kindergarten – Grade 6 are invited to a Christmas craft morning sponsored by the Holy Family/St. Pius X Youth Group on Saturday, December 13 from 9:00 a.m. – noon. Children received a flyer with information about the day and a registration form on the back either in school or at their religious education class last week. Remember we have room for 60 kids and the registration deadline is Wednesday, December 3.
OPENING CELEBRATION FOR THE YEAR FOR CONSECRATED LIFE: All are invited to the diocesan Day for Consecrated Life on Sunday, December 7 in New Ulm! This event is a kick-off to the Year of Consecrated Life declared by Pope Francis to Begin on November 30 2014 and ending February 2, 2016. More than 50 religious sisters from 10 different communities plan to attend! The Day for Consecrated Life begins with 11:00 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral with Bishop John M. LeVoir, followed by 12:00 p.m. lunch at Holy Trinity Convent, next to the Cathedral, at 1:00 p.m. There will be convent tours and open gym, and at 2:00 p.m. a “Sisters Got Talent,” talent show featuring the gifts of religious sisters from many different communities. We will observe a Holy Hour with Vespers at 3:30 p.m. at the Cathedral. We especially encourage families and youth to join us for this fun and joy-filled event! While there is no charge for this event a free-will offering would be accepted. Contact Sr. Anna at [email protected] or 507-233-5320 to RSVP for lunch.
ST. PIUS X MOTHERS' GROUP: Did you know that the Catholic Church has been a great champion for scientific advances throughout the centuries? Have you ever wondered what Einstein's equation E=mc2 is all about? Please join us Saturday, December 13, when Anna Enright, PhD, presents her talk Faith and Science. She will discuss how there are no conflicts between our faith and scientific findings including such topics as the Big Bang Theory, evolution, and human life beginning at conception. Come for a brief lesson in math, physics, and biology and to hear what the Catechism and popes have said about science. We will pray a rosary at 9:00 a.m. in the church. Our meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the basement meeting room. All women of the parish are welcome. Call Sue Mielke at 320-395-2571 for more information.
DIOCESE OF NEW ULM ADVENT PRAYER SERVICE AT HOLY TRINITY THIS YEAR: All families, especially those with children, are invited to attend an Advent Prayer Service with Bishop John M. LeVoir on Sunday, Dec. 14. The service is at 2:00 p.m. in Winsted at the Church of the Holy Trinity. This service is designed to help us focus on Advent and prepare for the true meaning of Christmas, centered on the birth of Jesus. Families are encouraged to bring the Baby Jesus figure from their home nativity set. The figure will be blessed by Bishop LeVoir individually as families come forward in procession. There will be a blessing on families and expectant mothers as they prepare for Jesus’ birth in their hearts. A “swaddling clothes” collection (blankets, sleepers, layette items, etc.) will be taken for babies in need and given to the Friends of San Lucas, area Birthright Centers, or First Choice Pregnancy Services. Cash donations will be taken to First Choice Pregnancy Services in New Ulm.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE HOURS FOR CONFIRMATION STUDENTS: Thursday, December 4: Down With Diabetes Christmas Gala from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Crow River Winery. Help to clear dinner dishes and other odd jobs. They could use a lot of help. To volunteer, please call Krista Green at 320-296-1729. Cutting Denim Squares: The Holy Family CCW Quilting Group is looking for volunteers to help cut squares out of old denim jeans. Please contact Celeste Zirbes at 320-327-2790 if you can help.
THANK YOU for your contributions to the Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development! Your generous gifts will help CCHD end poverty in the United States through better education, improved housing, and economic development. CCHD grants improve education, support economic development. Through CCHD and its beneficiaries, we help keep Catholic social teaching alive and carry out Jesus’ mission to “bring glad tidings to the poor . . to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free” (Lk 4:18).
