Dear Church Friends and Family,

Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus

Christ! In this wonderful season leading up to our celebration of

the Thanksgiving holiday, I hope you will take some time to think

upon God’s Word. Throughout Scriptures, both New and Old

Testament, we are encouraged and even challenged to give thanks

to the Lord God in all circumstances.

I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of our wonder-

ful deeds. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your

name, O Most High. – Psalm 9: 1-2

Now it is easy for us to give thanks for the good things. It doesn’t

challenge us to give God our appreciation for the many blessings

that He has bestowed upon us – food, shelter, clean water, family

and friends to name just a few. May we never forget from day to

day to give God the praise for these many things that He has given

us to make our lives more comfortable and fulfilling.

My question for you now, though, is “can you give God the thanks

when you go through even hard times?” Can you look at the diffi-

cult things in your life and tell God “thank you” anyway? In Scrip-

tures, we read of those such as King David, Job, the Prophets, and

the Apostle Paul that all sang God’s praises even in times of perse-

cution and suffering. Could we do the same? What a witness for

our faith to those outside of the body of believers when we can

give God the glory even in difficult times. May we never forget to

be thankful for what God has done, even in hard times.

While Thanksgiving should never be limited to just a day or week-

end on the calendar, I encourage you to take some extra time now

to be thankful. Tell God personally of all the ways that you feel

blessed…and even some of the ways that you are struggling. Be

assured that in all things and at all times, God walks alongside of

you or even carries you when needed. May we never fail to give

God the praise!

In His Service,

Pastor Lenore

Williamsport District Vital Conversations Williamsport District Vital Conversations for November will be held on the 13th at 7pm at St.

Paul-Calvary UMC on Memorial Avenue in Williamsport. Our conversation will be based upon

topics from the book “The Anatomy of Peace: Resolving the Heart of Conflict” from the Ar-

binger Institute. All are welcome to attend (not required to have read the book). Please let Pas-

tor Lenore know if you are planning to attend.

Veterans Recognition A luncheon to honor our veterans will be held in Fellowship Hall on

November 11th following the 10:45 a.m. worship service. This event

is an opportunity to thank our men and women who have served and

are currently serving in the Armed Services of our country. To these

folks we owe so much as their sacrifices have been many. If you are a

veteran, we would like to honor you for your commitment to serve

the United States of America. Last year we lined the stage with pictures of our veterans - living

and those who are now gone and we would like to do the same this year. If you have a picture

of a veteran, we would like to display it on the stage that day. Please label the picture with the

name of the veteran. Following the luncheon and service, you may pick up the photos. We are

asking that you sign up on the board in the lounge area so we can be properly prepared to serve

you a delicious lunch. Join us in thanking our country’s heroes for preserving our freedoms.

This is an event you won’t want to miss. To those of you who have served… “Thank you for

your service.” Sponsored by the Fellowship Team

Food Drive Everyone is invited to contribute a non-perishable food item to be given to the United Churches Food Pantry on Park Avenue, Williamsport. They serve an av-erage of 168 households each month or 377 clients. Those clients are provided with 3 meals a day for 3 days of each month. Not a lot, but greatly appreciated.

What can you contribute? Canned goods (especially soups, potatoes, fruits, peas, beets, carrots, etc.), boxed goods (cereal, cake and brownie mixes, Stovetop stuff-ing, crackers), ramen noodles, frosting, juices. No expired items please!!

We will be collecting the week of November 18th through the 25th. This includes our Thanks-giving Eve service. Thank you for your generosity.

West End Christian Community Center Report 2018

In 2018 we were able to add two services to what we offer from our Dia-

mond Street Campus. On the third Wednesday of each month we are partic-

ipating in the Eldershare program through the Central Pennsylvania Food

Bank. This is an income-based food distribution program for qualified sen-

iors. We also became the polling place for the 6th and 7th wards of the New-

berry section of Williamsport. Both of these programs bring us more exposure and opportunity

to be an outreach ministry to the community.

We now have 18 programs and services operating from our building to help fulfill our mission:

which is to work in covenant with Christ to embrace and unify all communities with his love by

responding to the spiritual, physical, emotional and social needs of all those we serve.

The addition of Pastor Calvin Phillips, part time, as our Outreach Liaison has helped to bridge a

relationship gap and has caused the people we serve to feel more connected to and a part of the

WECCC and, hopefully, the overall Saint John’s Newberry UMC community.

Our Soup Kitchen is running smoothly and cost efficiently under the direction of Regina Gair,

our Kitchen Coordinator who is funded in part by Americorp. We continue to serve up to 1300

hot meals a month to those in need.

The climate at the center is one of caring, happy, benevolence. All of the programs work in con-

cert and consideration of all of the others. Each is quick to recommend another program if the

opportunity presents itself so that we can be of the best service to the community. When at all

possible we direct those who come through our doors to Saint John’s Newberry UMC and the

programs offered there.

To all who volunteer, donate, and pray for the ministry of the WECCC, THANK YOU. The

ministries offered to the community of the West End are available because of you, and of course

God’s will.

Sincerely,

Todd

All are welcome to attend a special worship service on Wednesday, November 21st at 7pm in the sanctuary. Before we fill our bellies with turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie, come give thanks to the Lord who has blessed us so abundantly!

To all our church family,

Thank for your cards and prayers over the last several weeks, months, and years for my brother John. He lost an 8 year battle with cancer on October 23rd. I am at peace with his death, I know he is with God and free from pain. I know your prayers meant a lot to him and his family.

Thank You, Bob and Ann Burns

Members of Saint John’s-Newberry,

Once again, your graciousness and love is so appreciated through the box of goodies that arrived at my college apartment. I can’t thank you enough for the generosity! It is so comforting to have a community of people who care about college students!

Thank you, Keara Hepler

Thank you so much for the box of goodies! College has been a lot for me and the snacks are such a great part of my day. It also means a lot knowing I have such a great support system at the Saint John’s-Newberry church. I look forward to the next worship service I’ll be able to at-tend.

Thanks again, Andrew Hunsinger

I am so thankful that you send the college boxes my way! I love the goodies, I use everything well, including the delicious snacks! The words of faith are always helpful and help me feel closer and closer to Him with every box you send. It cleanses my mind and opens my eyes.

Thank you, Shannon Helman

Thank You

Continuing what has become a Christmas “tradition” for our church, the music program will of-fer a worship experience for everyone on December 9. Kneeling in Bethlehem utilizes congregation-al singing, scripture proclamation, and the poetry of Ann Weems to recount the story of Jesus’ birth, its significance, and its application for us today. The program begins at 7:00 p.m., with a tureen dinner preceding it at 5:30 p.m. (Bring your own tableware and a dish to pass; drinks will be provided.) A donation of canned goods or non-perishable items is suggested. Childcare TBA. Contact Ellen Davis at 570-326-5569 with any questions.

Operation Christmas Child Operation Christmas Child will be postponed this year. However, please hold on to any items

you may have purchased as we will be participating next year. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Thanks to all who have participated in the past and to those who plan to in the future.

Williamsport District Mission Opportunity Pastor Lenore will be leading a mission trip to New Hope Methodist Church (a church that she formerly served with Global Ministries) in Freeport, the Bahamas, again this summer from July 20-27. This is open for persons from our district churches that are 16 and over with a valid pass-port and a signed VIM reference from their pastor. We will be leading VBS four days during the week, experiencing worship with the New Hope Congregation and learning about the culture of the Bahamian people that most tourists do not experience. Cost for the trip is $1250 (which in-cludes airfare, housing, most meals and activities). We will be keeping a full schedule, playing hard with the kids, sleeping on the church floor, taking outdoor showers and eating lots of ethnic food, so know that we will be safe and cared-for but not staying in hotels or resorts. Please con-tact Lenore at [email protected] or 717-479-2544 if you would like to sign up or get more in-fo. First deposit of $250 due by 12/31/18 to hold a space (limited to 12).

When marking your offering envelope for “Missions” please be specific. If your intention is to

give to the monthly missions, please mark your envelope as such. We want to be sure to direct

your offerings to the funds you intend. Thank you. Your attention to this is appreciated.

Sunday School for Everyone! Learning about Jesus is fun and life changing. So in order to give our kids the foundation that lasts a life time we have the following Sunday School Classes to choose from....

• Nursery-- with Vanessa Bennett • Pre-School -- with Michelle Pierce • Combined Kindergarten & 1st Grade-- with Irenay Weaver • Combined 2nd & 3rd Grade-- with Keri-Beth Wapinsky • Combined 4th & 5th Grade -- with Wendy Decker for the kids that are older 6th grade on up

to 12th grade. Since we all learn differently, they now have a choice of which of the following classes they want to be in....

• 6th graders can choose to stay in Wendy Decker's class with the 4th & 5th grades. OR they can join one of the two other classes now offered...

• 6th to 12th grade --with Co-Teachers Lea Frymire and Steve Johnson OR • 6th to 12th grade --with Co-Teachers Waylon Harlan and Dorothy Eiswert.

There is also a Post High School class led by Co-Teachers Steve Martin and Daun Williamson. There are also many different Adult Sunday School Classes. As you can see there is a class for Everyone!!

These classes are provided thanks to ALL the wonderful volunteers. A HUGE shout out to Angela Krebs for being the helper in Irenay Weaver's class. All the classes NEED a helper like Angela to provide support to the teachers. Even if you can only help for a week or two, YOU bring a gift that no one else can. So please help! There is a sign up sheet out-side each class room.

Didn't sign up! It's okay... Just show up. Help when you can. The kids are such a blessing. What are you waiting for?! Answer the call ! Say “Here I am Lord. It is I Lord.”

I can tell you from personal experience that my Sunday school class has changed my life. I have seen the reflection of God in my class. The bible says, " Seek and Ye Shall Find."

So for all the adults and kids who are NOT in a Sunday School Class, Pick one, Join a class OR be a helper in one. Learn more about our Lord and Savior. Your Blessings are waiting for YOU!

Just FYI --- Maria Johnson will be filling in while Vanessa is out with her baby. AND Nancy Jacobs will be filling in while Michelle is out with her baby.

If you have any questions, please talk to any of the wonderful Sunday School Teacher or reach out to me.

As always, with love, Honored to serve our Lord Jesus Christ with You! PattyJo Kline
