Get your tap shoes out, your band together, lines memorized, and all talents perfected: “St. Joe’s Got Talent” is returning to town. After last year’s success, the Allied Arts Council is proud to announce that Bob Shultz is the chair for the 2012 St. Joe’s Got Talent. Shultz is in his 10th year as the film critic for KQ2, and is also a writer for the bi-weekly paper “The Regular Joe.” The Allied Arts Council is also proud to announce the 2012 Arts Fund co- chairs: Bridget Blevins, Nathan Byrne, and Mike Bracciano. If you missed it last year, “St. Joe’s Got Talent” is the perfect place to showcase your talent. Whether your talent is singing, dancing, playing an instrument, magic, or any talent, including underwater basket weaving (well maybe not that), St. Joe’s Got Talent is the place to shine, as long as you are not a professional. Although last year’s St. Joe’s Got Talent was a huge success, the Allied Arts Council wants to make taping more accessible. Tapings are being held in January at Missouri Western State University, Word of Life Church, and Café Acoustic. Taping begins January 14 at Word of Life Church starting at 1 p.m. Taping continues at Café Acoustic, on January 24, beginning at 7 p.m. You must be 21 or older to enter Café Acoustic. The final tapings are January 26 at Missouri Western State University starting at 6 p.m. Like last year, there is no age limit, and groups are welcome to participate. You do not have to be from St. Joseph; everyone is encouraged to enter. To register, go online www.stjoearts.org, download the entry form, attend one of the open tapings, and pay the $10 entry fee. St. Joe’s Got Talent is a family event, so the Allied Arts Council does ask that your act or talent be family friendly. Please limit your performance to three minutes. Similar to last year, KQ2 will post the acts online where viewers can view and vote for their favorite acts. The Allied Arts Council and KQ2 reserve the right to refuse to post a submission online for any reason or for no reason at all, at their sole discretion. On March 1 at 7:30 p.m., the top voted acts will perform live on the Missouri Theater stage. Each act will have up to five minutes to perform before judges and a live audience. Two awards will be handed out: The Critics’ Award, to be determined by the judges; and the People’s Choice Award. Since January is a time to set goals, this is a good time to mention that the Allied Arts staff and board are coming together to set some long range goals. This didn’t just start this month. Last fall, the board and staff came together on a Saturday morning to plan long-range goals. We were fortunate to have Dr. Mark Laney, executive director of Heartland Health facilitate the meeting. This helped to identify goals that the Council will work on and be measured by for the next 3-5 years.

We plan to focus on funding for the or-ganization, defining who we are, and

the allied arts CounCil of st. Joseph, Missouri exists “to bring arts and people together.” Founded in 1963, the Council is one of the oldest in the State of Missouri and is acknowledged statewide as an arts leader. In 1990, the City of St. Joseph designated the Allied Arts Council as the City’s official community arts agency. Operating with a staff of four and a volunteer base approaching 2,000, the Council takes the lead in our community in organizing, fund-raising, advocating, educating, and servicing the lo-cal arts community.

Organizational membership in the Council is open to non-profit agencies who provide arts related activities. Cur-rently sixteen arts and cultural agencies are members. As an umbrella agency, the Council assists with schedul-ing, funding, and marketing for all member agencies. The Council is also working with the City of St. Joseph to in-crease marketing for the major performing arts center in the city, the Missouri Theater.

The Council provides educational programs, art exhibits, and summer youth arts programs, as well as operating the annual Trails West!® arts festival.

A chat with your President...serving the underserved. We also plan to measure how we achieve these goals.

A lot of hard work has gone into set-ting goals and once again it is help-ful to look at why the arts matter and why we work as an organization. The arts are important to our city because they impact the culture, the econo-my, education and the quality of life.

Impact Culture

Culture is probably a word thrown around a lot in the context of the arts. St. Joseph has a proud cultural heritage. We have a story and a heritage that be-longs to our city and our city alone. By promoting the arts, we help to preserve the culture and tell our story. The arts also give the community the imagination to continue the story.

Impact Economy

The arts impact the economy. The last study measuring this showed that in St. Joseph, Missouri, the arts have an 8.3 million dollar impact on the economy. Currently, the Allied Arts staff and volun-teers directed by Teresa Fankhauser are performing a study to get more current data of the arts impact on the economy.

I am optimistic that the arts’ impact on the economy will have grown. Stay tuned for the results.

Impact Education

Children educated in the arts show significant improvement in all areas of studies over students with no arts train-ing. In particular, the arts students show higher test scores in the subjects of math and science. They engage in less risky behavior and are more involved in the community. These students also have the imagination and ability to think outside the box, which are attractive qualities to future employers.

Impact Quality of Life

A vibrant arts community will attract business and talent to a community. The arts help make St. Joseph a place where people want to live and raise a family. The arts make people want to stay in the community.

Getting to know the Allied Arts Council Staff: Ginger Montgomery

As soon as she walks into a room, the mood of the room just rises, and her face turns into a smile. Since October of 2010, the Allied Arts Council has been under the Texas charm of bookkeeper Ginger Montgomery.

A Texas born girl, Ginger has traveled the country with her family, each time finding a new home. Since marrying her husband, U.S. Air Force Major Jeff Montgomery, the Montgomery family has moved seven times in their fourteen-year marriage. Ginger counted how many times they had moved, and she couldn’t believe how often they moved in such a short time period.

While stationed in Utah at Hill Air Force Base, Ginger attended Weber State University and received an Accounting degree.

If you ever have a conversation with Ginger, you can immediately tell that her family and friends are where her heart is. Her nine-year-old daughter Erin and

her seven-year-old son Jackson gladly consume her days.

Being a Texas native, Ginger loves... loves the Dallas Cowboys. Jokingly she said, “When I was a little girl, I always dreamed of growing up to be a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader.” Although she might not admit it, somewhere hidden inside of her there’s a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader.

If she is not watching the Cowboys, or practicing all of her wild cheerleader moves, Ginger is reading, exercising, or being with her children.

If you are ever in the neighborhood, stop by the Allied Arts Council and meet Ginger, she’ll have a smile for you!

Growing up in an arts family and arts community Christopher Alexander, a member of the artist database and Platte County High School’s accompanist, has been surrounded by art his entire life.

Starting in early elementary school Alexander started to teach himself to play piano. It was then that he began his love for the arts. “Learning to play the piano and compose music came out of the decision to teach myself. It worked for me to learn what I could do as a composer and pianist on my own terms before making the choice to improve those skills.”

“I began becoming a part of the community arts scene volunteering in productions with Robidoux Resident Theatre,” Alexander said, and he began to volunteer for multiple productions. Alexander said, “After my first production the summer before my senior year, I became hooked.”

When asked about his inspiration for his work Alexander knew

instantly where it comes from. “It is always gratifying to sit at a piano and just let my fingers carry me away with playing tunes almost out of nowhere. First and foremost, God and my faith are what bring me to music everyday.” Alexander went on to say how he always surrounds himself with music whether it is on his iPod or YouTube for inspiration.

Alexander has performed many places throughout the nation, including the Kansas City Music Hall; St. Joseph; Colden, NY; Brooklyn, NY; Newtown, MO; Van Wert, OH; and even British Columbia.

Alexander has many talents to offer to the community. On the registry database he lists his specialty area as performance arts, but with very eclectic tastes. His talents range from composing commissioned pieces, performance ensembles, and choral music; playing for or directing musical theatre productions, and providing background music for parties or other special events.

The Artist Registry database has many opportunities to contact local artists for your arts needs. Christopher Alexander is one of many artists to contact on the database. To find other artists visit www.stjoearts.org.

Member Spotlight

You are planning an event, decorating a new room, or need a musician, but have no idea who to contact. All of these occasions are exactly why the Allied Arts Council created the Artist Registry Database.

The Artist Registry Database started last year, both for artists in the Northwest Missouri area to get their names out, and for people to find the perfect artist for their needs, and has been growing ever since.

The database includes names, addresses, and phone numbers for visual, performing, and literary artists. It also includes individuals and groups, as well as technical experts such as theater directors and visual arts judges. The Allied Arts Council not only wants to help people find that perfect artist, we also want to help artists make contact with clients. We encourage artists in Atchison, Andrew, Buchanan, Clinton, DeKalb, Gentry, Holt, Nodaway and

Worth counties in Missouri, and Doniphan and Atchison counties in Kansas, to register themselves at www.stjoearts.org/registry.asp so that people in the Northwest Missouri regional area can find them.

With the database, you can search for the perfect artist for your occasion, or stumble upon an artist to keep in mind for a project down the road. On top of that, the registry is free to join, and free to use!
