We now are through three quarters of 2015 and the board has been able to

maintain a positive cash flow. It gets more difficult each year but the goal is to

get to 2017 when some changes will have to be made based on the cable contract

decision. Since the current cable contract ends in 2017, the cable committee is in

negotiation with a company called Hotwire at the present time and more answers

will be forthcoming.

The volunteer for the third quarter was Lynda Pratt who has been an ac-

tive volunteer for many years. She currently serves on the maintenance commit-

tee, the clubhouse cleaning committee and the common area committee. She is

also a past member of the board of directors and is a tireless volunteer and a go

getter. Thank you Lynda.

Please keep in mind that we as homeowners have an obligation to main-

tain our properties including roofs, driveways and patios. We also are required to

St. James HOA Golf Tournament

Like so many of us today, I spend too much time in front of a computer screen communicating with my friends and family. That changes with the approaching holidays when many of us will be travel-ing to see family or having friends coming to visit. We will actually be communicating in person.

This holiday season is time to rejoice — and yet the holidays can also trigger quite the opposite feeling. Thanks to consumerism and a feeling of obligation we sometimes feel more oppressed and overwhelmed than joyful.

So if this happens to you, sit down and have a cup of tea or glass of wine. Take a breath and think about holidays past when life was simpler. Our loved ones will still “love us” even if they do not get that latest video game, diamond necklace, or Big Bertha driver. They should be happy that we have time to spend with them because not everyone is as fortunate.

Let us be thankful that we are able to share the holidays with loved ones and remember those who cannot.

Happy holidays,

Barbara Warren

Editor in chief

...golf or “gowf” was a Scottish sport that was developed in the late Middle Ages but did not find its way to Florida until the 1920’s. Back then it was for the rich. Times have changed and we at St. James are very lucky to have a golf course in our own backyard.

Golf was made even more enjoyable thanks to convenience of golf carts that take you from hole to hole easily. It is hard to believe that there was a time before golf carts since many of us have one to get around our community. So I looked into the history of golf carts and thought I would share it with you.

The first person to make a golf cart commercially was Merle Williams. He used the knowledge he attained from working with electric cars that were produced during WWII during gas rationing. He started the Marketeer Company in California that originally constructed grocery shopping buggies but then produced the first electric golf cart in 1951.

Golf carts became very popular, and Marketeer was soon confronted by many competitors. E-Z-Go and LEKTRO both began fabricating golf carts in 1954. Cushman in 1955, and Club Car in 1958. In the early 1960s, Taylor-Dunn and Harley-Davidson also began selling carts.

In 1957, Max Walker created the first gas powered cart which had 3 wheels. In the 1970’s and 80’s, gas powered carts became very popular and rivaled against electric carts. It wasn’t until the 1970’s though that golf carts began being seen on the golf course.

Seeing that money was to be made large corporations started buying golf cart manufacturers in the 1990s. Today, Ingersoll Rand owns Club Car. Textron Inc. bought E-Z-Go and Cushman. Both companies build their carts in Augusta, Georgia, home of the annual Masters tournament.

So next time you take a spin in your golf cart you will know how it all began.

This quarter we are featuring St. James’ writer, Rod Burns.

Rod grew up in Maryland. He was educated at Calvert Hall High School in Balti-more and then went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree from Loyola College. He played many sports - baseball, football, softball, basketball, lacrosse, ice skat-ing, snow skiing, tennis and golf. He was a successful sales rep and manager for national advertising companies and always finished at the top in sales every year.

Rod helped publish sales books to be used by sales representatives in Fortune 500 Companies.

He owned and operated successful businesses including, advertis-ing, marketing, printing, newspaper and home and environmental inspections, plus holds a Patent and Copyrights.

One of his latest books is The Formula for Achieving Goals and

Finding Success. He wrote this motivation book because he read

numerous sales and motivational books from the best authors but

never found a book that described the methods and strategies he

used to accomplish his goals for success.

Rod says, “Use my methods and strategies outlined in this book

and you cannot help but be successful in accomplishing your

goals.”

Another book that Rod has written is for children. It is The Adventures of Tommy and Tina—Dreaming of Being a Termite and Finding a Home in

the Forest. This book is an educational story with great illustrations for young children. Its purpose is to build relationships, and to help im-prove communications between children and their older family mem-bers.

Rod has a new The Adventures of Tommy and Tina coming out on December 1st. This time they cream of being Loggerhead Turtles.

All of Rod’s books are available on Amazon.com in print or Kindle form. We are so proud to have a successful author amongst us and encourage everyone to read!

ARECA PALM TREE UPDATE

November 2, we celebrate the first anniversary

of the plantings along the turnpike fence of the golf

course. Although several plants look a little listless,

the vast majority of the 495 arecas planted are surviv-

ing and thriving. For those few that do not flourish,

Greenland Nursery will work with the us to insure our

success rate. The issue to

date is the weeds growing between the plantings. The

golf course management requests that we (HOA) com-

plete this task. Our HOA maintenance staff has vol-

unteered to weed as well as fertilize the arecas before

the colder weather. Obviously this task must occur as

time allows, although staff expects completion by No-

vember 30, 2015. I and other homeowners, are

offering assistance to our maintenance staff. If anyone

is interested in clearing weeds within any section of

the areca plantings, please contact the maintenance

department by leaving your number in the HOA office.

They will supply volunteers with a weed pulling tool

and a bucket for the waste.

Thanks to all homeowners and the HOA Board

of Directors for the continued support of this project.
