THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
But from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die. Gn 2:17
Immediately after these verses, from Genesis chapter 1 and 2, chapter 3 begins with its account of the first fall of man and woman, linked with the mysterious tree already called the “tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (Gn 2:17). Thus an entirely new situation emerges, essentially different from the preceding. The tree of knowledge of good and evil is the line of demarcation between the two original situations which Genesis speaks of. The first situation was that of original innocence, in which man (male and female) was, as it were, outside the sphere of knowledge of good and evil, when at the moment he transgressed the Creator’s prohibition and ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge. The second situation, however, was that in which man, after having disobeyed the Creator’s command at the prompting of evil spirit, symbolized by the serpent, found himself in a certain way, within the sphere of the knowledge of good and evil. This second situation determined the state of human sinfulness, in contrast to the state of primitive innocence. Systematic theology will discern in these two anti-thetical situations two different states of human nature: the state of integral nature and the state of fallen nature. All this emerges from that “*Yahwist” text of Genesis (chapters) 2-3, which contains in itself the most ancient word of revelation. Evidently it has a fundamental signifi-cance for the theology of man and theology of the body. Ed Cecil, Respect Life Committee *Yahwist – is unique in emphasizing a close relationship between humans and the soil. Many representations of that fact are found in Gn 2:4, 3:24, 3:17 and 3:19. By all means look up and read the biblical verses. Your heart will be delighted with the information.

When Jesus drives the money changers and animal
vendors from the Temple, the Jews demand a sign to
prove his authority. They do not have the faith to see
what is in front of them. Later, when Jesus dies and
is risen, his disciples remember his words, and they
understand and believe. Do we have the faith to see
what is revealed right in front of us, in this
Eucharist?

Resisting Happiness
The Stewardship Committee would like
to express a heartfelt thank you all those
who participated in reading Resisting
Happiness during our stewardship
renewal. Whether you read it on your own, were one of
the 175 parishioners who participated in a chat or you
hosted a book chat, we hope that it was beneficial to you
in some way and transitioned you easily into the Lenten
season. We have heard many inspiring stories about
how the book affected those who spent time with it. If
you would like share a short reflection on your personal
experience with Resisting Happiness, we would love to hear it
and share it with the entire parish if you allow. You may
submit reflections to [email protected].
Stewardship Incentive Winners!
Congratulations to parishioners Martha Clark and
Venita Portman who won the stewardship
incentives this year. Martha was the winner of the
drawing for those who had turned in their
stewardship card by February 12 and she chose the
$200 Kroger gift card. Venita won the drawing for
those who signed up for EFT and she chose the
Louisville Zoo package. Enjoy your prizes!
Please Return Your Stewardship Forms
Take a moment to find your 2018-19 stewardship
form, complete it and return to the parish office. As
we look toward setting the parish budget for next
year, it is important that we know parishioner
stewardship intentions. Thank you in advance for
your quick response to this request. If you did not
receive a form or would like another copy, you can
pick one up in the parish office or find it at
https://www.stjames-etown.org/stewardship/ Thank
you to all those who have turned in your forms!
“To those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of
here, and stop making my Father’s house a
marketplace.” John 2:16
Does my use of my time, talent, and treasure reflect my
true priorities? In other words, do I have a marketplace
mentality -- me centered? or, do I have a stewardship
mentality – other centered?
