Randy’s Reflection

It was great to see faces back in church again. To see the joy and emotion that was exhibited by the very fact that we were celebrating Mass together was a sight to behold. As Father mentioned, things may be changing and updated quickly. The best place to keep up with all that is happening is on the website or on our Facebook page. When you go to our Facebook page do not forget to “like” us. Today we celebrate Father’s Day. We honor all Father’s living and deceased and those who have served as father figures in our lives. Wisdom sometimes takes time to take root in us. Some great wisdom that I got from my father was “if you can afford a car, you can afford to move out.” As a teen this didn’t make sense to me until I did get a car in my twenties. Then it took hold and I truly understood the cost of a car. Another memory I have is a Brewer game I went to with my dad at old County Stadium. We sat in the bleachers and it was rain poncho day. I think that it did start to rain and I traded my poncho to get one that fit or maybe someone gave me theirs because I did not get one. If I recall correctly, I missed seeing Hank Aaron hit a home run. Can’t really remember why, but I missed it. The memory may be a bit hazy after 40 plus years, but I remember the important thing; I was at the game with dad. Another thing I do remember now that am older now is that I never felt afraid of anything when dad was around. He may say otherwise, but looking back I remember being safe and secure if dad was around. I would imagine I was told many times not to be afraid. Do not be afraid. WOW! Is that easier said than done at times, especially in these times of uncertainty and unrest. On this twelfth Sunday of ordinary time, we celebrate Christ Our Lord who is always with us. He continues to deliver us from all that makes us afraid, threatens, and makes life difficult for us.

In the first reading, God delivered the prophet Jeremiah from the deadly plots and hands of evil men. Our world is full of threats against the righteous and innocent. Today, hardly a day passes without one hearing news of troubling events. This is cause of great fear for many, especially, for those whose trust is solely on this world rather than in God. However, for those who like the prophet, realize that the Lord is on their side, God will surely not disappoint them. The threats and gravity of these terrors might appear overwhelming. However, they are certainly not greater than what God has handled in the history of humanity. In the gospel, Jesus exhorts us: “Do not be afraid, for everything that is now covered will be uncovered.” I am reminded of the Bernadette Farrell song that states “All that is hidden will be made clear. All that is dark now will be revealed. What you have heard in the dark proclaim in the light; what you hear in whispers proclaim from the housetops.“ We also hear more comforting and assuring words when we are told;” Every hair on your head has been counted. So, there is no need to be afraid!” This simply indicates that the Lord is on our side. He is ready and capable to deliver us from both sin as well as from all the threats that we face in our daily life. So, how to we get this shield of armor to protect us? With our earthly father and father figures it works the same way as with our heavenly Father. All we need to do to merit the protection promised us today is simply to be on his side by trusting him. Happy Father’s Day. Randy

Becoming our Best Selves One Step at a Time

Father Richard Rohr is one of those really, really smart guys whose vocabulary is sometimes like a foreign lan-guage to us mere mortals. But he is very compassion-ate to the poor. His definition of “poor” covers more than money problems, though. It includes those who are powerless, dismissed/ignored, or are low on the social totem pole for whatever reason. He suggests that what the world is most in need of is solidarity of peo-ple, that is acceptance of all people as equal in our eyes and in the eyes of the law, just as we are all equal in the eyes of God. He teaches that we need to go through five “conversions,” that is five changes of heart before we can reach that stage. 1. Develop basic compassion -- actually care -- about the poor; 2. Get angry about their situation. Not useless, blustering anger, but the burning gut kind that makes us determined to do something about a situation; 3. Look for things about the poor that are favorable. Many people who have little of the fancy stuff we have are more satisfied with their lot in life than we are. How come?; 4. Get to know the effects on people of being consistently put down by upper society; 5. Walk the walk, not just talk the talk. If possible, visit a homeless shelter or a legal aid office. Get to know the people, both the clients and the staff, as well as the mission of the place. We’d understand better what Fa-ther Richard is talking about.

Prayer For Vocations O Father, raise up among Christians abundant and holy vocations to the priesthood, who keep the faith alive and guard the blessed memory of your Son Je-

sus through the preaching of his word and the admin-istration of the Sacraments, with which you continual-ly renew your faithful. Grant us holy ministers of your altar, who are careful and fervent guardians of the

Eucharist, the sacrament of the supreme gift of Christ for the redemption of the world. Call ministers of your mercy, who, through the sacrament of Reconciliation,

spread the joy of your forgiveness. Grant, O Father, that the Church may welcome with joy the numerous inspirations of the Spirit of your Son and, docile to His teachings, may she care for vocations to the ministeri-al priesthood and to the consecrated life. Sustain the Bishops, priests and deacons, consecrated men and

women, and all the baptized in Christ, so that they may faithfully fulfill their mission at the service of the

Gospel. This we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

ST. JUDE PRAYER FOR FATHERS

Good and loving God, giver of all good gifts,

your fatherly love is fully present to us in the gift of our fathers. Father, whose presence

brings calm and reassurance, who protects us and gives safety with gentle power,

and whose love is always honest and true, bless our fathers with your spirit of wisdom,

and may we honor their treasure of knowledge.

St. Jude, you, too, led a life of selfless service

and fruitful love. Guide our fathers

with the strength of your arm. Give them right faith,

that they might teach with authority; convinced hope, that they may comfort us when

we falter; and perfect charity,

to anchor our families in your love. Amen.

Neighbor at St. Jude

As God’s people, we are called to care for others. During this season of the pandemic we are all aware that the needs of those around us are great and have increased. Many are financially hurting right now and so if you cannot give to this cause you can still be part of this project through your prayers for success and we will pray for your inten-tions; but if you are able to give then please prayer-fully consider what the Lord is calling you to do. Thank you, in advance, for your prayers and your financial support. Let’s together answer the Holy Spirit’s call!
