A Tour of Hell One night a man had a dream in which he had a tour of hell. To his surprise, hell had no infinite fire or bottomless burning pit filled with tormented souls. In fact, it was not like the hell he had pictured at all. He was then led through a maze of dark, dank passages lined with the doors to countless cells, and each cell he passed was identical. The central piece of furniture in each cell was an altar and before each altar knelt a sickly, trembling, ghostly figure in intense prayer and adoration. The man asked his guide, “But to whom are they praying to?” “Themselves”, was the reply. The guide continued, “There is only pure self-worship here. Through worshiping them-selves, placing their hopes and dependence on themselves and their own dreams alone, they are feeding on themselves and exhausting their own souls. This is why they look so sickly and thin.” The man was appalled and saddened by row upon row of cells, small prisons filled with pathetic, non-communicating inmates, who were doomed to spend eternity in solitary confinement- them-selves, their first, last and only object of worship. God, as taught by Jesus in the Gospel is the God of life, a God whose boundless love created us, redeemed us, and opened the way to eternal life for us all. God will love us for all eternity- but there always exists the possibility that we will refuse that love. The refusal to accept and respond to God’s love is exactly what hell is. Hell is not a place where God puts us- it’s a place we put ourselves. In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges the Sadducees and our own view of reality. Too often we see ourselves as the center of all things- that time and history revolve around us and our needs and dreams. We can become so intent on controlling our lives that God is exiled from us, called back only when things go wrong or we need some kind of divine help or intervention. But Christ challenges us to see our world as centered in Him and the things of God. Let us not deceive ourselves about Jesus and the words he spoke to us all. Let us not deceive ourselves about who we are and the life that we live. The life that awaits us hereafter, will be the life we have chosen, the consequence of what we did, and the choices we’ve made on earth. It’s best not to spend our lives on earth adoring ourselves, but rather worshipping the one true God who loves us profoundly.

• RCIA is for non-Catholics and un-

catechized Catholics in a non-threatening, no pressure environment.

• RCIA is for adults who have not been

baptized and want to be received into the Catholic Church.

• RCIA is also for those already baptized Catholic and have not yet received First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion or Confirmation, and who are un-catechized. • Together with catechists and sponsors, candidates explore elements of the Catholic faith and prepare to receive the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil in April.

TABERNACLE OR STATUE CANDLE FOR LOVED ONES

New to our Church beginning with the new year, is the opportunity to remember and honor a loved one, by sponsoring the lighting/burning of our Tabernacle Can-dle. The cost is $20 for the candle that lasts 7 days and will begin and end on a Saturday. The name of your loved one and family will appear as follows in the bulletin: The Tabernacle candle burning in the Sanctuary of our Church this week is in memory of (name), as requested by (individual or family name). OR we will place a candle stand and candle next to our statue of St. Gregory or the Statue of Mary the Mysti-cal Rose, asking for St. Gregory’s or Mary’s special intercession and graces for a loved one. The cost is $20. You pick the date you want the candle to be lit and which statue, and it will be placed there and burn-ing for 7 days. Adoration at St. Gregory the Great! Our weekly Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on

Wednesdays from 8:30 till 12:30 has been going very well! Prayer is what supports and blesses the work we do at St. Gregory. Without regular and devout

prayer, a Parish will truly suffer. I’m looking to increase the length of Adoration to either 2:30 or

3:30 PM. If you have any interest in coming to pray at our Church in the presence of our Lord, for either a

half or full hour, anywhere from 12:30 to 3:30, we can use your help and prayer! If you can commit to this every Wednesday, please call Patty Barrows at

St. Gregory’s Intercessory Prayer Group

Our Intercessory Prayer Group meets the first and third Monday of each month at 8:00 p.m. in the church. All our welcome to

come and pray for your own personal intentions and those of the parish. Meetings last about one half hour.

Due to the Federal health privacy laws (HIPPA), hospitals can no longer issue

names of admitted patients to area parishes unless it is requested by the patient. You or a family member must let the Admissions Office know of your

desire to have us visit during stay. If you would like a visit at home or at a

Hospitality & Fellowship

Volunteers are needed.

We are looking for volunteers to act as Mass Greeters (Welcoming people) at each door of the Church. Please consider helping us to promote a warm and welcoming church atmosphere. We alternate between Daily Bread and Catholic Charities

with our food donations. In this way we can reach a broader number of people who need assistance. We ask that you be as generous

as possible to help feed the hungry. The baskets are located at all the church entrances, and all items should be

non-perishable.

The next Bottle & Can Truck will be at St. Gregory’s

during the weekend of January 10 -13. Thank you for your support.

Do You Have ONE Night This Winter?

We are looking for adults over 30 years old. This night will keep our guests out of the cold. Please consider volunteering at the Overflow Homeless shelter in Danbury. Our shelter opens in early November and we stay open every night until mid- April. We are affiliated with the Dorothy Day shelter offering additional beds at the First Congregational Church.
