STEWARDSHIP / CORRESPONSABILIDAD

Gratitude in Action: Our Way of Life / Gratitud en Acción: Nuestra forma de Vida

Lent is a beautiful season in our liturgical year. Some may not believe so because of the denials associated with it, the challenge to greater sacrifice. There is also a challenge to improve the person we are at the time we begin our Lenten journey. During this time of fasting and sacrifice, more fervent prayer and devotion, we have the opportunity for cleansing, positive change and new beginnings. We try to avoid sin. We might also embrace the idea of sainthood. “Consequently sin is always an offense that touches others, that alters the world and damages it… At the very moment that a person begins human existence, which is a good, he or she is confronted by a sin-damaged world. Each of us enters into a situation in which relationality has been hurt. Consequently each person is, from the very start, damaged in relationships and does not engage in them as he or she ought. Sin pursues the human being, and he or she capitulates [surrenders] to it.”1 Lent is a perfect time to seek forgiveness which brings us reconciliation with God and each other. This time of dryness allows us a deeper spiritual examination of ourselves and encourages a closer, more personal encounter with Jesus. We might ask ourselves: ‘Who have I offended by word or action? Whose needs have I forgotten or ignored? Who IS Jesus in my life? How is He present to me each and every day? How can my relationship with Him be more meaningful?’ “In The Seven Storey Mountain, the Trappist monk and spiritual writer, Thomas Merton, explains how, when asked by his friend Robert Lax what he, Merton, wanted to be, he replied that he wanted to be a good Catholic. Lax, a poet and mystic, told him, ‘What you should say is that you want to be a saint.’ Merton deferred, conscious of his own failings and inadequacies. But Lax persisted: ‘All that is necessary to be a saint is to want to be one.’ By desiring sainthood, Lax said, we consent to become what God has created us to be. God, in turn, will make us saints.” (Franciscan Spirit Blog, Franciscan Media online) And so we pray,

“God of our conversion, lead us to sainthood through our lenten journey.

May we embrace this time of penance in a spirit of prayer. May we fast from all that distracts us from you.

May we come to the aid of those in need. At journey’s end, may we find ourselves renewed as members

of the body of Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.”

Podríamos preguntarnos: '¿A quién he ofendido con palabras o acciones?

Bad things do happen to good people and this part of reality continues to confound us. Psalm 73 records some of this confusion and the same confusion is the context of this weekend’s second reading. In the verses before the second reading, we’re told that

good people can reduce the bad things that happen to them because they are good. However, “even if you should suffer because of righteousness, blessed are you (1 Peter 3:14).” Good people who suffer are blessed because they are with Christ who was good and who also suffered. If Christians value following Christ, it has to be for better or for worse and when we suffer - or even do more works of penance in Lent - it is in union with Christ who turned suffering into salvation. It is being in Christ even in times of trial that is important, not seeking out trials for the sake of trials. The only way to know the wisdom of this approach is to rely on it when in need. This second reading is a commentary on the magnitude of Christ’s salvation. It is vast and surprising. Not only did the righteous one die for the sake of the unrighteous, something exceedingly rare, but the death of a human like us proclaimed God’s triumph even to those imprisoned spirits who had been quite successful ignoring God. An example of these imprisoned spirits is given in the second reading when it refers to the people who turned their back on God in Noah’s day, the same people who perished in the flood. The reading says that Jesus preached to these dead people or these spirits. Different Christians interpret Jesus’ actual preaching to these spirits differently. The words do agree with the Nicene Creed prayed at Sunday Masses where it says that Jesus descended into hell. Hell was the abode of the dead and it included those who ignored God and those who were just. Jesus died, so he descended into the abode of the dead and once there preached the Good News to the souls imprisoned there (see Catechism of the Catholic Church #632-633).” Others say that passed out of the realm of the dead and that passing showed the power of God and in that way Jesus “preached.” Having already mentioned the flood, the second reading refers to those who were saved, those on the ark, as being “saved through water. This prefigured baptism….” Baptism connects us with the life of Jesus and if we are connected with the life of Jesus we respond differently when bad things happen to good people. We have hope and strength in Christ.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We are one community nourished and transformed by the Eucharist. As the body of Christ, we are led by the Holy Spirit to know, love and serve God and one another.
