STEWARDSHIP / CORRESPONSABILIDAD

Gratitude in Action: Our Way of Life / Gratitud en Acción: Nuestra forma de Vida

Sunday, March 21, Stephen Ministry at Saint George Catholic Church officially began. It seems most fitting to speak about the ministry from a Stewardship point of view. A Steward brings his or her gifts and talents to the Lord to use as He directs. These gifts have been generously bestowed upon us, and when placed in service to the Lord, He replenishes them in even greater abundance for our continued service. The commissioned Stephen Leaders and Ministers bring such gifts with them to minister among the members of our community who struggle with life situations that challenge them in a variety of ways. These situations bring about troubled times for people and perhaps family and loved ones as well. Troubled times may involve loss – of health, loved ones, employment. Depression or difficulty coping may develop. Friends and loved ones may not understand the needs of this person attempting to handle a serious illness or the illness of a spouse. They may not be able to be that strong support during a time of death and dying. Stewards realize the gifts and talents with which we have been blessed do not belong exclusively to us; they are to be shared. Just as Jesus shared of Himself, so, we too, as Stewards share of our time and gifts. Stewards respect the dignity and life of those they encounter and thus choose to help others maintain their dignity by offering the service of themselves to those in need. The individuals of our Saint George Parish who were recently commissioned as Stephen Ministers are also Stewards. They are trained to listen, support and assist those who are challenged and struggling with difficult, emotional, and sometimes debilitating circumstances that have altered their usual way of life. These Ministers/Stewards are not indifferent to another’s problems; they actively listen to better identify and understand what the other is experiencing. They do not judge, rather, they support and validate those feelings being experienced by someone attempting to cope with life and move forward in a positive manner. These Ministers/Stewards are also people who hold everything they hear and are told in the strictest confidence. Those people they serve can know, regardless of what is said between a Stephen Minister and themselves, remains between them only. A Stephen Minister insight: “When my care receiver takes the risk of sharing personal thoughts and feelings with me, I view that as a gift – and I guard that gift carefully and treat it with the utmost respect.” “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:18

~Carole Drake Pastoral Assistant and Community Outreach

On one hand it seemed like another example of a reoccurring dream people sometimes have. These are the dreams where people don’t stand a chance, the dreams where someone studies hard for a critical test only to arrive at the site of the test five minutes

before the exam ends. It certainly may have seemed like this in the eyes of the apostles. Jesus had always walked a delicate line. His teachings and miracles challenged mightily the powers of the day, but Jesus’ standing with the common people seemed to forestall action against him. It was a tenuous defense; the Lord himself predicted three times that he would suffer and die. The crowds shouted out as Jesus entered the holy city, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!” But then a different crowd stirred up by the same authorities who feared Jesus cried out “crucify him” when Pilate asked what should be done with this particular Son of David. On the other hand it seemed like another example of God saving his people despite heavy odds, the kind of thing that happened when a disorganized group of slaves was delivered from cruel slavery in the land of Egypt centuries ago. It certainly seemed like this in Jesus’ eyes. He knew what he preached and the wondrous signs he worked pleased the Father. An unfortunate side effect was that these same deeds occasioned some powerful enemies here on earth. Christ’s connection with the Father was unbreakable and because of this, Christ’s connection with the People of God, as hard-hearted as they can be, was also unbreakable. Human nature fares poorly in such circumstances. It breaks. Jesus was “sorrowful even to death” as he prayed alone in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus stood by in pain as he was betrayed by one of his apostles and as the others stumbled over themselves in their haste to abandon him. Jesus cried out on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” Jesus trusted even as he died. This weekend’s second reading wonders through the words “he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is beyond every name….” In Holy Week we face the same reality as did Jesus and his followers. We are in the process of deciding if we don’t stand a chance or if God is at work saving his people.

STAND FOR LIFE From Conception to Natural Death

Summer Schedule

We will continue our prayers for Life the 1st Saturday of the Month on Bluff St. & 600 South, starting at 9:30 to around 11:30 am. Even

though we are entering some very hot temperatures we realize not everyone will be able to attend due to vacations, etc. However, we are passionate about LIFE and a representative(s) will be there to review the guidelines, (they will have a name tag). Wear appropriate modest clothing, bring a water bottle, bring a chair and your rosary. Signs are provided, carry one or not. Like life, there are always sacrifices to be made. Sacrificing 30 minutes (or whatever you can do) by offering it up to the Lord once a month is so very little and the benefits bring great rewards. We hope to see you there.

Proverbios 12:18

Building Fund

If you have these collection envelopes, you may use them. You may also contribute to the Building Fund through our online giving.

Fellow parishioners, we invite the entire family to join us after the Easter Sunday Masses, on April 4th, for an Easter egg hunt. Just as Jesus has hatched from His

tomb to give us new life, we hope this time of almsgiving, prayer, and penance will hatch many fruits in your walk towards an eternity with our Lord. Share the joy that our Lord brought with His resurrection with the littlest members of our Catholic Church. Be sure to remind them that the small happiness they receive from the treats that hatch from the eggs is little when compared to the happiness we will receive when finding new life in our Lord. Hope to see you peeps there!

DONATIONS NEEDED: Please consider donating candy and Easter eggs for the Easter Egg hunt. We will be leaving a designated box inside of the church. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and generosity.

The Rice Bowls must be returned with contributions/donations no later than Sunday, March 28.

SOCKS FOR HEROES Just as kids need coats in the winter, our veterans need socks. The Knights of

Columbus in Utah have distributed over 7600 pairs of socks to Veterans’ centers around the state. Members of our Parish’s Knights Assembly are shown here presenting Socks For Heroes to Tony Moore, State Officer at the Southern Utah Veterans Home in Ivins on March 8. Photo by Julie Stolz

This weekend’s second collection benefits the Diocesan Development Drive (DDD)

If you have DDD envelopes, you may use them for this collection. You may also contribute to DDD through our Parish online giving.
