STEWARDSHIP / CORRESPONSABILIDAD

Gratitude in Action: Our Way of Life / Gratitud en Acción: Nuestra forma de Vida

Easter is new life and new light. It is a time of joy. Easter is HOPE. It is the triumph of the Cross – the triumph of life over death, of light over darkness, of peace over violence. This is a time of new birth and rebirth. We welcome new, young life, beginning a family or adding to our families. The love within our hearts is rekindled as we reflect on the love of Jesus for each of us as He gave Himself for us all in obedience to the will of His Father. We witness new life in the creation surrounding us. Our attention and pleasure are drawn to the young of our animal kingdom as we watch the young follow mom, while she teaches and they learn about survival. Jesus has taught us obedience, lived in love, is our key to survival in a world that encourages independence and self-gratification toward a false sense of survival. New plant life also engages our senses with their sprouting buds and flowers, reminding us warmer, sunny days lie ahead that will encourage their growth. They will once again capture our eye when their beauty truly blossoms, a beauty only God can create. For us as humans, those talents we possess and which allow us also to bring beauty to this world – to draw, to paint, to design, to sing, to engage the senses of others – are gifts, gifts only God can give. These, too, bring joy to others. Jesus gave His life that we might have eternal life. He brought a shining light to the world that cannot be extinguished, one that is ever present to lead and guide each day of our earthly journey. God’s ways are not always our ways. He has shown us through the triumph of His only Son, Jesus, that violence can be overcome by love to bring about victory. For us, willing the good of our neighbor is a reflection of that love. Easter is HOPE – Heaven, Our Peace Eternal! Only in God, only in Him will our souls truly rest and be at peace! “The joy of the risen Lord is the sunshine of our Father’s love. The joy of Jesus is the hope of eternal happiness. The joy of Jesus is the flame of burning love. Easter is this joy.”1 1Thirsting for God: Daily Meditations by Mother Teresa (Author: Angelo D. Scolozzi)

Easter is a contrast of stories. For some people Easter is like the story of a soul once touched by God. Out of nowhere, God captured the soul of a man physically addicted to chemicals and spiritually addicted to vices. For several weeks the light took

ahold of this man and he saw and almost tasted a reality he never thought he would know. To the surprise of everyone around him, he left the city, the people, and the routines associated with addiction, darkness, and sin. He became a fixture at his new parish, helping people with large tasks with a ready smile. He was infectious. People started coming to the parish to see him in action. But as time passed, his energy and his vision ebbed. He began to wonder if his new life was just a dream. He was haunted by the fact that there were no guarantees. He worried that he would slip back into his old way of life. Over time his fears became self-fulfilling prophecies. As quickly as he appeared on the scene he departed from it. For some people Easter is like an old married couple. The joy of the wedding day was intense and showered with powerful possibilities within easy reach. They were captivated for weeks. But soon the honeymoon was over and the light dimmed. The stresses of jobs, school, and eventually children exposed fissures and annoyances by the dozens. Arguments took longer to resolve, less time was spent together, and both grew very tired. But it never really occurred to either of them to quit. Somehow they just had to work things out. They found themselves in the slightly unnerving experience of living in both extreme frustration and stubborn hope at the same time. This experience fortified them. The light of their wedding day began to return but with different intensities and longer durations. Their 50th wedding anniversary was truly a celebration and both harbored the firm conviction that more was to come. For some people Easter is a brief moment of life all too soon gone. Fear wins out and, like Peter walking on water, they soon sink. Unlike Peter, some refuse to try again. For other people Easter never really goes away even if there are more immediate concerns. They are like the Apostles who didn’t understand Jesus but couldn’t leave him. For some people the light of Easter grows more intense. They are like the Mother of God who pondered things in her heart until the Spirit clarified them. Easter is the same event, but we find ourselves in different experiences. May the light shine on us all.

SPECIAL THANKS!! A special thank you from the newly commissioned Stephen Ministers to Mary Alexander who shared her giftedness by “lettering” the certificates they each received. A special thanks also to Cora Egger who captured a photo of each Leader and Minister so we could share with our parish family. God’s gifts are given to each of us to be shared with others, and both of these ladies did just that! Thank you so very much!

A Happy Ending Isn’t the Whole Story “Is there a happy ending?” When my kids were young, we never made it past the first whiff of any narrative tension before I got this question. As soon as whatever princess or furry woodland animal who was the hero of the story got into any small scrape, they wanted that reassurance, “Is there a happy ending?” I can’t say I blame them. Don’t we all feel that way sometimes? We enter into a relationship with someone or some situation, and we just want to protect ourselves. We want to know it’s not going to go badly — or, if it does, that we will be able to come back from it. It’s a human instinct, a reflex. Our inclination to protect ourselves makes it so that we sometimes want to press fast-forward on the bad stuff and skip straight ahead to the happily-ever-after. Easter is the ultimate happy ending. It’s the day of miracles. The day when all the stones roll away and all the sins are forgiven. It’s the day that puts everything right. But if we learned anything from this week — from the Passion and death of the Lord — it’s that we can’t press fast-forward on the hardships of life. That tension, that loss, that fear — it’s crucial, isn’t it? As Catholics, we are who we are because of Easter. But Easter doesn’t happen without Good Friday. So, does the story of salvation have a happy ending? We know it does. But we also remember that the ending isn’t all that matters.

GIVING and CARING ALWAYS This time of uncertainty and doubt, changing former ways of doing things and accepting new ways of accomplishing what needs to be done, has created challenges for all of us. Basic needs and expenses continue. Life and its unfolding, ever-changing events happen daily. We are continuing to serve our parish family daily, especially during unexpected life events. As much as possible, we attempt to maintain a balanced and “normal” schedule of what you expect from your Church. We appreciate your communication with us and your ongoing monetary support. Some of you have changed your method of contributing to the support of our parish through Online Giving. This method recognizes your faithful, uninterrupted support of the parish and our ability to meet our continuing needs. Some of you mail your contributions to Saint George Catholic Church, P.O. Box 188, St. George, UT 84771. These mailings are a welcome surprise on our daily visits to the post office. We have had the opportunity to see some of you when you personally deliver your contributions to the parish office Monday through Friday from 9 am – 5pm. Your familiar faces are a joy, allowing us to reconnect with friends not seen for a while. Whatever continuing method of financial support you have chosen for our parish, your family, together with the services we continue to offer during this challenging time, we remain connected. Through your connectedness with us, you contribute to the joy of your parish staff as we continue serving God and each other. THANK YOU!! Stop by and see us, or give us a call. We are always ready to assist!

The Thrift Store is asking all who wish to donate to give them a call before you donate. Please call the Store at (435) 673-1029. We do not want you to drive to the store if we are not able to accept your donations. We want to thank you for your support.
