Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord April 14, 2019

The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced. -- Isaiah 50:7a

THE STORY OF OUR REDEMPTION We begin the final week of Lent with these familiar readings. This year, we hear the Passion from the Gospel of Luke. These readings for Palm Sunday and the Passion used to be read on successive Sundays. Now they are combined into a single feast, so that we may see the whole sweep of the glory and the suffering played out. Jesus accepts the adulation of the crowd, the foreshadowing of his glory in the Resurrection. He bids farewell to his disciples in his last Passover, and forgives his tormentors as he dies on the cross. Later this week, we enter the Holy Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, when the whole story of our redemption will play out once again. (c) J. S. Paluch

“There are over one billion Catholics in the world; all of which inhabit every corner of the globe. To be Catholic is to be a part of this worldwide com-munity, where all the diversity within the human race is united under a set of core beliefs. Like the many voices of a choir singing across the world, we come together in a spiritual harmony.” - Unknown

Not My Will, But Your Will Be Done

Ruth Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn, was bak-ing chocolate cookies which were traditionally made with regular white flour and melted bitter sweet choco-late mixed together, when she discovered she had run out of baker’s chocolate. All she had was regular con-fectionary chocolate, so she took that and cut it into small chips intending to let it melt in the dough. How-ever, the pieces did not melt and the cookies turned out to be what we now know as chocolate-chip cook-ies. The interesting part of the story is that a mistake turned out to be a new invention – chocolate-chip cookies. We do not always know how things are going to turn out. Sometimes, they turn out for the better even though in the midst it seems like something bad. Something good comes as a result of it.

As Christians, we believe that all things can be worked out for the good. We are not talking about little things like chocolate chip cookies. We are talking about life as a whole. No matter what happens to us, our family or to our friends, all things can be worked for the good of salvation. Therefore, when bad things happen to us, as they often do, we are called to have a deep faith that says “I know this is a bad thing; I don’t like it but I also believe that God can work some good out of this.” We say what Jesus says in today’s Agony in the Gar-den, “Not my will, Lord, but your will be done.”

That sounds so easy to say but when we are in the midst of pain and suffering it is very hard sometimes to let go of our own will and to allow the Father’s will to take its course. We often think, “Why have you abandoned me, Lord?” And that is the very cry we hear in the Passion narrative today. Despite all of the good that God did in and through Christ, his companions turned away from him. His enemies ganged up on him and found a way to have him crucified. Luke’s Gospel even has Pilate and Herod not wanting him dead but the crowd of enemies prevail.

That sometimes happens in our life. Things prevail around us and it becomes painful. We are called to al-low the Lord to work the good through and in us. It is exactly what Christ did. Christ submitted himself to the Father’s Will and despite what seems to be darkness and gloom, the Resurrection dawned a new era. Nothing can thwart God’s Will. We do not always understand it. Something new will be born and that is the clear message that Resurrection is our final desti-ny. That we will all, no matter what happens on this side, we will all be welcomed in to heaven on the other side. That no matter what our enemies may say or do, Christ has our back. In the end, God’s love prevails. We say, “Lord, not my will but your will be done.”

By Father Brendan McGuire, Pastor of Holy Spirit Par-ish, San Jose (taken from www.dsj.org)

Who are the Jesuits? The Jesuits, more formally known as the Society of Jesus, is a Roman Catholic order of priests, founded in northern Spain in 1534 by a one-time Basque noble-man and mystic, St. Ignatius of Loyola. Jesuits are not a mo-nastic order, meaning its priests and brothers do not live in monasteries. The order grew out of Ignatius’ conversion experi-ence during a rigorously painful recovery from severe wounds he sustained in battle. There are approximately 16,000 Jesuits worldwide — the largest male religious order in the world. As members of a religious order, they embrace the three vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. And, since their founding, at Ignatius’ insistence, Jesuits also observe a fourth vow: to al-ways be prepared and ready to respond to whatever mission the pope may require of them.

Since its beginnings Jesuit spirituality— or way of living in rela-tionship with God — has emphasized “finding God in all things” and serving a world in need “to the greater glory of God.” Part of their work is to train men and women as “contemplatives in action,” for service in the world. They do this through programs called retreats of varying length based on the Spiritual Exercis-es of St. Ignatius at parishes and at 24 retreat centers in the US .Today Jesuits serve as pastors, teachers, doctors, lawyers, astronomers, and journalists among scores of other professions that enable them to carry out their mission of service especially to those who are victims of social injustice. Probably the most well-known Jesuit today is Pope Francis. The international headquarters of the Jesuits is in Rome. You are eagerly invited to join the Jesuits in this mission in service “to the greater glory of God.”
