Sunday, January 13, 2019 – The Baptism of the Lord - Cycle C Readings: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7, Psalm 29 “The Lord will bless his people with peace.”, Acts 10:34-38, Luke 3:15-16, 21-22
Parishioners of St. Eugene, Students and Visitors,
The Church celebrates today in its liturgy the Baptism of the Lord, and with the feast day placed in the liturgical calendar, the
Christmas season comes to an end for the beginning of the first part of the ordinary time, that extends until March 06, 2019 that
will be celebrated Ash Wednesday.
Nevertheless, what is important in celebrating the Baptisms of the Lord? To understand the Baptism as a sacrament, it is neces-
sary to acknowledge that to be baptized is to “immersed” in Christ. However, this is meaning of the Baptism in after Jesus being
baptized, before him, with John the Baptist it was the rite to be cleansing with water. He (John the Baptist), was a sign of re-
pentance and foreshadowing of the baptism established by Jesus.
It is already known the question: Why was Jesus baptized if he was in the need of a baptism of repentance? It was the same
question of John whom Jesus gave the answer: “John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you
are coming to me?” 1Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then
he allowed him.” (Matthew. 3:14-15).
Jesus’ answer to John was a sign of the meaning of baptism inaugurated by him, I mean,
to be driven by the Spirit of God to his mission. As Luke’s gospel portrays so beautifully
in the last lines: “…After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been bap-
tized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in
bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with
you I am well pleased." (Luke. 3:21-22)
If we embody the meaning of baptism given to by Jesus, we would understand that to be
baptized does not mean, to be a part of a very selective society. To be baptized, to be im-
mersed in Jesus is to take also our own responsibility to live day in and day out the gospel.

Bowman—Seabrook Diocesan Youth Choir Youth 2nd-12th Grade
You are invited to join the Bowman-Seabrook Diocesan Youth Gospel Choir. Rehearsals are schedule twice a month. Rehearsals for January are scheduled for January 19. We rehearse from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon. Rehearsals for January will be at St. Eugene. Youth may join by fill-ing out a registration form with Carole Curry on January 12. Feligreses de San Eugenio, estudiantes y visitantes,
La Iglesia celebra hoy en su liturgia el Bautismo del Señor, y con este día de fiesta en el calendario litúrgico, la
temporada navideña finaliza y comenzamos con la primera parte del tiempo ordinario, que se extiende hasta el 6 de
marzo de 2019. En este día se celebrará el miércoles de ceniza.
Sin embargo, ¿qué es importante en la celebración de los bautismos del Señor? Para entender el bautismo como un
sacramento, es necesario reconocer que ser bautizado es “sumergirse” en Cristo. Sin embargo, este es el significado
del bautismo después de que Jesús fue bautizado, antes de él, con Juan el Bautista fue el rito de limpiar con agua. Él
(Juan el Bautista), fue un signo de arrepentimiento y prefiguración del bautismo establecido por Jesús.
Ya se sabe la pregunta: ¿Por qué se bautizó a Jesús, estaba en la necesidad de un bautismo de arrepentimiento? Era la
misma pregunta de Juan a quien Jesús le dio la respuesta: "Juan trató de impedirlo, diciendo:" Necesito ser
bautizado por ti y, sin embargo, ¿vas a venir a mí? " Jesús le respondió:" Permítelo. ahora, por lo tanto, es
apropiado que cumplamos toda justicia ". Entonces él lo permitió" (Mateo 3: 14-15).
La respuesta de Jesús a Juan fue una señal del significado del bautismo iniciado por él, es decir, que el Espíritu de
Dios lo condujo a su misión. Como el evangelio de Lucas retrata tan bellamente en las últimas líneas: “... Después de
que todas las personas habían sido bautizadas y Jesús también había sido bautizado y estaba orando, el cielo se
abrió y el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre él en forma corporal como una paloma. Y vino una voz del cielo: "Tú
eres mi Hijo amado; estoy muy complacido contigo" (Lucas 3: 21-22)
Si encarnamos el significado del bautismo dado por Jesús, entenderíamos que ser bautizado no significa ser parte de
una sociedad muy selectiva. Bautizarnos, sumergirnos en Jesús es tomar también nuestra responsabilidad de vivir día
tras día el evangelio.

Eternal Father, you have given us your only-begotten Son
to take our nature upon him, and revealed him to us
at his baptism in the River Jordan, grant that we, who have been born again of water
and the Holy Spirit, and made your children by adoption and grace,
may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour,
who is alive with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
