Dear Parish Family, A beautiful tradition of the Church is how she sanctifies time. Dates on the calendar are dedicated to honoring various saints, or title of Our Blessed Lord. We have liturgical seasons where we emphasize various aspects of the life in Christ. The Church has also dedicated months of the year to various devotions. Most of you are probably aware of May Crowning as the month of May is dedicated to Our Lady and Queen. July is a month the Church as dedicated to the Precious Blood of Jesus. We can trace this back to 1837 with Blessed Caspar Buffalo leading the way. There are many devotions one can find to the Precious Blood, but a simple one that can be said throughout the day is Precious Blood of Christ, save us!With the pandemic it may seem as if the faithful are no longer able to partake in the Precious Blood of Christ as Mass, but this is not the case. While the liturgical texts refer to the sacred host as The Body of Christ, and the contents of the chalice as The Blood of Christ, both the Body and Blood of Christ are fully present under both forms of Communion. This is called the Doctrine of Concomitance, and was declared as such in 1415 AD at the Council of Constance. The gist of it is that the Eucharist, Christ, cannot be divided, and thus the entirety of the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ is in every morsel of a sacred host, and in every droplet of the Precious Blood. In other words, when you receive only the host at Mass, you are receiving BOTH the Body and Blood of Jesus. In my final year of seminary, I had an abscessed tooth for a week. If any food touched it, it would shoot pain through my whole body. I did not want to shake in pain when receiving the Eucharist at Mass, so I only received from the chalice those days. When I did, I received BOTH the Body and Blood of Jesus. Throughout her history the Church has had times where she permits, and restricts the reception of the Eucharist under both species for various reasons. The pandemic has caused us to restrict the use of the chalice, but is should not cause us to pause as to whether we are receiving a full Communion. We absolutely are, and we must always rejoice for such a great gift to be made available to us by God out if his infinite love. Through the intercession of Ss. Cyril and Methodius, may God bless and keep you this week. Prayers, Rev. Edwin C. Dwyer, JCL Bible Study with Fr. Adam Maher: There is a Bible Study on Thursday nights at 7 pm with Fr. Adam Maher.
