ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “We who know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ,
even we have believed in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.” (Gal 2:16-17)

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The Anchor
In today’s readings a crucial theme is pro-posed to our attention: what’s forgive-ness? Under which conditions are we for-
given? Can we earn forgiveness? David, the second king of Israel, the supreme model of servant of God, commit-ted a horrible sin: he had an affair with a married woman, Bathsheba, and, in order to conceal the conse-quences of his action, he gave order to have her hus-band, Uriah, killed in battle. David could hide his mis-deeds from men, but not from God: through the voice of the prophet Nathan, God awakens David from his false self-assurance, confronting him with his own sin. David finally acknowledged the gravity of his action: “I have sinned against the LORD.” God has forgiven David, nev-ertheless there’s a punishment connected with the mis-deed: David’s son would die. God’s act of forgiveness is presented as completely ar-bitrary and still connected with a price to pay as the consequence of human action: in reading this passage of the second book of Samuel, we understand that God is kind and forgiving, but we can’t fathom God’s mercy. The episode of Jesus and the “woman of the perfume” sheds a complete different and new light on God’s mercy and forgiveness: God’s mercy is completely gra-tuitous, the manifestation of God’s love for us, His crea-tures. What was missing in the New Testament, his pre-sented here as the “secret” of God’ forgiveness: God wants to forgive us because His love for us is infinite, it’s a love that breaks apart the bond sin-punishment to re-create us and make us able to “show great love”. In washing Jesus’ feet with her tears, wiping them with her hair, kissing them and anointing them, the “woman of the perfume” is showing Simon, the guests and all of us that there is only one thing she wants and needs: hearing Jesus telling her: “Your sins are forgiven. Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” God’s forgiveness has a name: Jesus Christ. In his per-son, God is “bowing down” from heaven to reach us and give us the gift of is mercy. We don’t know who the “woman of the perfume” was, we don’t know where she had met Jesus before that dinner, we don’t know what prompted her to enter in the house of a “righteous man” and, in spite of con-tempt and rejection, kneeling as Jesus feet to wash them… We do know one thing though: we want to have the same heart full of affection and longing to hear Je-sus telling us: “Your sins are forgiven. Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Fr. Paolo
