SAINT CECILIA CEMETERY – I used Memorial Day

weekend to announce an addition to the Saint Cecilia Ceme-

tery. A COLUMBARIUM is being constructed, off site, and

will be delivered to the cemetery sometime in August. A

“columbarium” is an above ground structure which houses

the ashes of the departed in individual compartments. Our

columbarium will have 80 compartments which will be

topped by a statue of the Risen Christ. Around the structure

will be the words the Lord Jesus spoke to Martha in Bethany

at the grave of her brother Lazarus, “I am the Resurrection

and the Life, he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall

he live.” (John 11:25) For those who choose cremation, the

columbarium is the place (along with the ground) which the

Catholic Church states is the proper place for the burial of the

faithful departed’s ashes. The columbarium will be placed on

the left side of the cemetery as you enter through the main

gate. One may purchase a burial niche as soon as the struc-

ture is in place and after it has been blessed. Information re-

garding the price for the burial spot will be announced in the

coming weeks. For further information you may speak to me

or the cemetery administrator, Mrs. Diane Boykow, by call-

ing the parish office. – FATHER ZIG

Sacrament will take place at Saint Cecilia Church be-

ginning at 1:30 p.m. A special invitation is given to

children to serve strewing flower petals during the pro-

cession and to be altar servers. I ask that parents please

help me in guiding their children to serve our Lord on

this special occasion. FATHER ZIG

The feast of the Nativity, or birthday of St. John the Baptist, the precursor of the Messiah and born six months before Him, is ob-served on June 24, and is one of the oldest feasts in the liturgy of the Church. He was the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth, a cousin of the Blessed Virgin mary. Tradition places the home and birthplace of the Baptist near the village of Ain-Karim, six miles west of Jerusalem, where a Franciscan church marks the site. The church is called “ St. John in the Mountains.”

What we know of this Saint, than whom a greater prophet had not arisen, from his sanctification before his birth to his martyr-dom under King Herod, is set down in Holy Scripture. He has always had a chief place in the veneration given by Holy Church to the heroic servants of God. While the feast of other Saints is celebrated on the day of their death, when their final victory is won, the birthday of St. John the Baptist is his feast day, as he was born free from original sin. We have also the feast of the Birth of Mary immaculate.

Thirty years after the birth of Jesus, John began his mission on the banks of the Jordan. He was the last of the prophets of the Old Covenant. His work was to prepare the way and announce the coming of the long-expected Messiah, the Redeemer, in Whom all flesh would see “the salvation of God.”

Before St. John was born, an angel announced that “many would rejoice in his birth,” and so June 24 is ranked among the joyous feasts of the year. In former times, and in other lands, it was observed with greater holiday rejoicing and greater outward dis-play that in our age. On the eve of St. John’s day “St. John’s fires” were lighted on the hills and mountains in many countries, as they are still lighted in some places, “Scarce had the last rays of the setting sun died away, when all the world over, immense col-umns of flame arose from every mountain top, and in an instant, every town and village and hamlet was lighted up.” (Dom. P.L.P. Gueranger)

PRAYER: God, you raised up St. John the Baptist to prepare a perfect people for Christ. Fill Your people wit the joy of possessing Your grace and direct the minds of all the faithful in the way of peace and salvation. Amen

BIRTH OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST June 24

My dear parishioners,

On this Sunday, the Lord’s Day, we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, commonly known as Corpus

Christi. In the Gospel Acclamation we hear the words of the Lord Jesus, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven,

whoever eats this bread will live forever.” The Lord promises that all those who participate in the Eucharist will live with Him

one day in glory. This feast is a reminder to us of how crucial it is each week, on the Lord’s Day, to receive the Bread of Life, the

antidote to death.

The Lord provides the Eucharist for us through the sacrament of holy orders. The Bishops, successors of the Apostles, ordain

priests who share with them the power to confect the Eucharist. It is through the words and actions of the priest and the power of

the Holy Spirit that bread and wine are changed into the holy and precious Body and Blood of Christ. The priesthood is essential

for the Eucharist to be present.

This Sunday our society commemorates FATHERS DAY, a day on which we salute our fathers. As head of the house, the father

is responsible for providing for the family and protecting it from harm. We pray that the Lord will strengthen all fathers in their

efforts to love and serve their family.

On this day a second collection is taken to support, SEMINARIAN EDUCATION in the Diocese of Paterson. We have about 50

seminarians in various levels of formation who will one day serve as FATHER in a parish family. Every parent who has a child

in college/graduate school knows how expensive it is to educate their child. Our Church depends on us to help in this effort. Our

generosity will help make possible Fathers in the future who will love and serve us in the diocese.

Next Sunday we say farewell to our two priests, Father Marcin and Father Mateusz. Both priests have served us faithfully and

will be truly missed. I hope that you will join us at the 12:15 p.m. Mass next Sunday in Saint Cecilia Church for their final Sun-

day Mass with us. A luncheon will take place in Hayes Hall immediately following the Mass to which all are invited. I ask that if

you are planning to attend the luncheon, please call the parish office no later than Thursday so that we can prepare properly. Our

two Fathers have served us well and I know that you will want to express that to them in your words and generosity.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY to all dads! God bless you, my good and holy people!

Father Zig
