Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 7, 2019

FOCUS: The Lord sends laborers to proclaim the kingdom.

Jesus appointed, instructed and sent seventy-two disci-ples to proclaim the kingdom of God. With his author-ity, they were able to spread the Gospel message, and it continues today. For we, too, are called, appointed, instructed and sent with authority. We are sent to en-gage the world and proclaim the kingdom. Like the early disciples, we are not sent alone: we have the Church as mother, and each other as co-travelers on the journey.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: The prophet Isaiah

instructs us to rejoice because the Lord assures us he will extend prosperity and comfort. In Paul's Letter to the Galatians, he writes that the cross of Jesus Christ has brought about a new creation, one which will bring peace and mercy to those who follow him. Luke’s Gos-pel tells of Christ appointing and sending seventy-two followers out in pairs—like lambs among wolves—with

instructions on how to labor in the field and proclaim the kingdom of God.

REFLECTION: The biblical number 72 represents all the nations, all the peoples of the earth. When Jesus sends out 72, it’s an outreach to all people and a state-ment about the universality of God salvific reach. The kingdom of God, which these missionaries will an-nounce, is for everyone – all races and nations. No one is left out; no one is excluded.

So we ask ourselves:

By our baptism we are all appointed as prophets. To whom is Jesus sending me?

What am I to say to them?

Second Collection Thank you for being as generous as possible in this week’s special collection, which supports the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the U.S., one in six people live in poverty. Through this collection you sup-port programs that address the causes of poverty and pro-vide a sustainable future for people across the country who struggle. Volunteer for PREP Our Parish Religious Education Program is looking for teachers and aides to prepare students for the Sacra-ments and learning about the Catholic faith.
