MISSION STATEMENT—We, the community of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located within the larger, diverse and artistic seaside community of Laguna Beach, recognize and celebrate the uniqueness which is grounded in the sacred mysteries and traditions of the Roman Catho-lic Church and in the history and lives of our individuals, families and leaders. Built on these roots, and in order to see the world as God sees it, we commit ourselves to: being a welcoming sanctuary and a place of prayer and worship, nurturing, assisting, encouraging and serving all those in need, offering all generations opportunities for personal and communal growth, and, by these commitments, to honor our call to evangelization.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION On the First Friday of each month we gather in prayer and praise before the Blessed Sacrament. Following the 8 a.m. Mass and concluding at 10 p.m. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Parents of infants requesting information about Baptism may contact the parish office. Infant baptisms are celebrated on the second Saturday of the month.

Lenten Penance Service

YOU ARE INVITED TO OUR PARISH PENANCE SERVICE

TUESDAY, APRIL 15TH

7:00 P.M. As you prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation this Lent, ask yourself these questions based on a passage from St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians (4:8): Whatever is true . . . Are there any areas in which I’m not being honest with myself and the Lord? Are there ways in which I have been dishonest with those closet to me? Am I avoiding my need to deal with a relationship that has been wounded? Whatever is honorable . . . Am I using my gifts and talents for God’s glory? Do my goals in life, especially my goals for my relationships, reflect gospel values? Or are they based more on self-centered concerns? Do I speak to other people, and about them, in a way that is respectful and straightforward? Whatever is just . . . Have I treated anyone unfairly? Have I engaged in improper deals at work or been untrue to a friend or family member? Have I focused more on the flaws of the people around me than on their gifts and blessings? Am I trying my best to care for the poor and the unfortunate? Whatever is pure . . . Have I guarded my mind and my eyes against lust? Have I acted impurely, either with someone else or with myself? Am I treating my husband or wife with honor and respect? Whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious . . . Are there ways in which my witness to the gospel is tarnished, whether by my speech or my actions? Have I become caught up in grudges or resentments against someone else? Is there someone I need to forgive? Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:8-9)

Laetare Sunday

Most Catholics today are used to the Mass being conducted in English, however, Latin remains the official language of the Catholic Church. Occasionally, Latin reasserts itself, as it does in the case Laetare Sunday. Laetare Sunday is the popular name for the Fourth Sunday in Lent. Laetare means “Rejoice” in Latin, and the Introit (entrance antiphon) in both the Traditional Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo is Isaiah 66:10-11, which begins “Laetare, Jerusalem” (“Rejoice, O Jerusalem”). Laetare Sunday has traditionally been viewed as a day of celebration, on which the austerity of Lent is briefly lessened. The passage from Isaiah continues, “rejoice with joy, you that have been in sorrow,” and on Laetare Sunday, the purple vestments and altar cloths of Lent are set aside, and rose ones are used instead. Flowers, which are normally forbidden during Lent, may be placed at the altar.

PASTORAL SERVICES APPEAL St. Catherine of Siena’s PSA 2014 Campaign Update (as of March 25, 2014)

# of # of Households Amount Amount Diocesan Parish Participants in the Parish Pledged Paid Goal Goal 66 1,017 $46,806 $25,051 $77,000 $90,000 Q. Why do we have two campaigns, For Christ Forever (FCF) and Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA) going on at the same time? A. The capital campaign, FCF, is an extraordinary campaign for extraordinary needs, the first ever in the history of our diocese to provide capital funds that are paid over time for more permanent projects such as growth of endowments, and renovation of the Cathedral campus. The PSA is an annual campaign to fund the annual budgets of our diocesan ministries. The PSA funds are fully utilized on an annual basis and require replenishing to keep these vital ministries operating. Currently in its 36th year, the PSA was initiated by Bish-op Johnson for the people of our growing diocese to join together to build up the Church in Orange Coun-ty. Our subsequent Bishops McFarland, Brown and now Bishop Vann believe that the PSA is necessary to continue to fund the important ministries and services that serve all Catholics in our Diocese as well as thou-sands of those in the community. Interested in giving to PSA online? Please visit https://www.oc-foundation.org/Donate2014PSA. Please be sure to select St. Catherine of Siena as your parish to ensure your gift is assigned to our parish.

THE SCRUTINIES The newly Elect and our Candidate are now in the period of Purification and Enlightenment, which customarily coincides with Lent. This period of intense spiritual preparation, is to purify the minds and hearts of the Elect and candidate. On Sunday, March 16, we celebrated the Penitential Rite for our candidate, Jonee Earl. This rite is for purification of “baptized but previously uncatechized” adults who are to re-ceive the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.

Last Sunday we celebrated the First Scrutiny Rite for the Elect. Today, we celebrate the Second Scrutiny, which are meant to “uncover then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the Elect, and strengthen all that is upright, strong and good”. They are celebrated to deliver the Elect from the power of sin and satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ. Please continue your prayers for them.

Jesús vino a cambiar nuestra perspectiva.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
