Saint Canera, patroness of Irish Sailors, is sitting in a boat with an
oil lamp, the symbol of wisdom and virginity, with a monastery on
an island in the background where she sought spiritual rest. She
was refused entrance to the island but was given Eucharist just
before she died. The shamrock speaks to her Irish ancestry.

Many years ago while I was living Italy, some friends of mine invited me on a hiking and camp-ing trip for 15 days with them, sort of in repay-ment for celebrating their marriage. The camp-ing trip was in northern Norway, several hundred kilometers north of the Arctic Circle…and it was stunning!! When I returned to Rome after the trip, I couldn’t help but tell everyone about my experience. In to-day’s Gospel from Mark (6:30-34), we hear of something similar. Jesus asked the apostles to tell of their experience of preaching repentance, driving out demons, and curing the sick. He asks them to share their experiences, both good and bad. In our lives, God also invites us to tell God of our experience of proclaiming the kingdom of God each day, whether they are good or bad. By tak-ing time each day to tell God what we have experienced, we are invited into a deeper relationship and communion with God. In turn, we can feel the support and encouragement of God in our lives to continue to proclaim the way of God in our world. In order to do this, we are invited to carve out quiet space in our lives to communicate with God. Jesus invited the apostles to “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” We can do the same in our lives by going to a “deserted place”, whether that is our room or a quiet place outside, to withdraw and retreat from the busyness of our lives for some essential prayer time. The goal seems to be a type of rest that helps us become reinvigorated to continue our lives as disciples of Christ. May we take time to with-draw with Jesus to a “deserted place” and tell him all that is hap-pening in our lives.
