The Nativity of St. John the Baptist June 24, 2018 3
Dear Parishioners, We take a short break from Sundays in Ordinary Time this weekend for a solem-nity that is celebrated on June 24 every year, no matter the day of the week; The Nativity of
Saint John the Baptist. Before he was born, John was chosen by God to pre-pare the world for the Son of God. Today, as we remember the birth of St. John the Baptist, let us recall our own baptism and our initiation into the Christian faith. Next week, our second collection will be for Peter’s Pence, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The Peter’s Pence Collection has ancient roots, linking back to New Testament times when people would provide material sup-port to the preaching of the Gospel for distribution to those in need. The collection is the way we, as members of the Catholic Church, unite our-selves to the concerns of the Holy Fa-ther. The proceeds benefit our broth-ers and sisters on the margins of soci-ety, including victims of war, oppres-sion, and disasters. Please be gener-ous. For more information, visit www.usccb.org/peters-pence.
As you may know, my regular day off is on Friday, and I have made ar-rangements for the morning mass on this day to be celebrated by a visiting priest. Since my coming to St. Ber-nardine, we have been blessed to have Fr. Krzysztof Swierczynski who helped us in saying mass on Fridays. This July (2018), Fr. Krzysztof will be leaving for Canada to study for his degree in Canon Law. Consequently, we will lose him as a mass celebrant. I would like to thank Fr. Krzysztof for his help and wish him God’s blessings in his studies. I have not been able to find another priest who can replace Fr. Krzysztof on my day off, so similarly to many parishes in the Archdiocese, on Friday mornings we will not have a Mass but will have Communion Service instead. This will be in effect beginning Friday, July 6. Please remember that after the 4th of July, masses will be celebrated in our Summer scheme; Saturday 5:00 P.M. and Sunday 10:30 A.M. mass will be celebrated in Fearon Hall. Sunday 8:00 A.M. mass will be celebrated in the Church. Many people shared with me recently their appreciation of the beautiful flowers and plants we enjoy in and around the church. A big thanks to Carol Good who takes care of all of them. God bless you, Fr. Stan

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
It’s midsummer day! We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today’s birth of the Baptist. Today’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christ-mas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting “St. John’s fires” in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the uni-fying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Que-bec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the cus-tom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach today and plunge in to recall your baptism? It’s a tradition! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
RESPECT LIFE In November 2017 the American Journal of
Psychiatry published a study titled “Association of Hormonal Contraception with Suicide At-tempts and Suicides.” For an average of 8.3 years, the study followed nearly 500,000 Danish women who took hormonal contraceptives in-cluding the “Pill,” the patch, the Nuva ring, Mirena IUD and oral progestin-only drugs.
The study concluded that not only were women who took hormonal contraceptives more likely to attempt suicide, they were much more likely to succeed. Compared to women who did not use hormonal contraceptives, risk of suicide was twice as likely.
But the most telling data revealed that sui-cide attempts were most likely to occur after just two months of hormonal contraceptive use. Ma-turing young women and girls take some time to adapt to the changes in body chemistry that by themselves cause mood swings; with the intro-duction of additional hormones intended to make the body dysfunctional, the mind and body struggle even more. Because the study controlled for previously diagnosed psychiatric conditions and other co-factors in suicidal ideation, it proved that the Pill itself—not any other pre-existing psychiatric problem—was the cause of suicidal behavior.
But the study contained one flaw: induced abortion was not considered a “confounder”—that is, something that might skew statistical analysis. Over half of women who seek an abor-tion have used contraception in the cycle that resulted in a pregnancy. A previously published study of Finnish women by Mikka Gissler found a three-fold increase in suicide among women with a history of induced abortion.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of Hu-manae Vitae, the prophecies of Blessed Pope Paul VI in this encyclical have come to fruition. The objectification of women cannot be more tragically expressed than in self-murder than can result from maiming and deforming her sexual nature. Source: Steven W. Mosher, “The Way the Pill Kills—This One Makes Five,” Population Research Institute Newsletter, May/June 2018.

The Nativity of St. John the Baptist June 24, 2018 9
JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the “precursor” of our Lord Je-sus Christ. All the Gospels report John’s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is com-ing. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grass-hoppers, John’s legacy is one of true roy-alty. His origins are similar to those fore-told by God through the prophet Isaiah: “You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory” (Isaiah 49:3). John’s humility—“I am not he”—was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant
