From Our Pastor, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler

Dear Friends, Living out the Gospel of Jesus is not something be-yond us, something too difficult for us. Spend some time, please, with this Sunday’s first reading. In it we hear Moses telling God’s people that God’s revealed way of living is very near to them, it is within their reach. He says it is “it is not too mysterious and re-mote for you.” He says it is not up in the sky or across the sea. “No, it is something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out.” If we can accept the fact that what God asks of us is something we can carry out then we might find the confidence to take the opportunities—all around us—to love as Jesus loves. The Gospel of the Good Sa-maritan we hear today is one which makes us think. Are we treating one another with mercy? I am pleased when I see how kind our parishioners are to the poor. As you know, there are a number of people in need who regularly come here to St. An-thony’s seeking assistance. They really need much more than they ask for. And often they need much more than they will accept. Pray with me for them and for each of us and our parish family. We can grow in our capacity to find the help they really need—and in our willingness to accompany them un-til they are ready to take the tougher step to accept that help. This Sunday, as a parish family, we turn humbly and confidently to our Blessed Mother, Mary. Please stay after Mass to be enrolled in the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel—or come back on her Feast Day this Tuesday, July 16th. Decide on a new prayer commitment you can make daily in her honor. Receive the Scapular as a sign of Mary’s constant presence and protection in your life—and of your willingness to accept her help. With my prayers, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler Pastor

The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on July 16th. The Brown Scapular is adapted from the scapular of the Carmelite Order, and represents a special Consecration to Our Lady under the title of: Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Once enrolled, the person has a special entrustment of themselves to Mary for their salvation.

Our Lady has promised to those who faithfully wear the scapular: "Those who die wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire." This must not be understood superstitiously or magically; but in light of Catholic teaching that

perseverance in faith, hope, and love are required for salvation. The scapular is a powerful reminder of this Christian obligation and of Mary's promise to help those consecrated to her, obtain the grace of final perseverance.

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA SCHOOL Dear St. Anthony Families,

Summer is flying by. Even though school is out, our building has been bustling with activity. Our campers are enjoying weekly themes with STEM-related activities and computer camp incorporated into the weekly themes. This past week was Spy Week with a scavenger hunt and message deciphering, all of this dressed like a spy, after creating their own spy badge, and capped with a field trip to the Spy Museum. In computers, younger students played spy games on educational sites and worked on puzzles and online activities that required students to use analytical and math skills to figure out the activities. The older students learned basic coding skills and created and designed their own characters and learned how to add animation.

While the campers are having fun and making new friends, our construction crew is busy turning the area by the gym into our new preschool area. We are all very excited that the slide show we posted on our preschool web page back in the spring is turning into a reality this summer.

We are blessed to have our experienced preschool staff ready and waiting to greet our new preschoolers in the fall. If you know of or have a preschooler that might benefit from a true Catholic start in their pre school education, schedule a tour, call (703) 820-7450 or email [email protected]. Yours in Christ, Nora Buçaj Principal

July 14 Stewardship Reflection “Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’”

—Luke 10:37 This was Jesus’ command at the end of the Good Sa-maritan story. Did you know that the Samaritans and Jews despised each other. The moral of the story is to love our neighbor. That means loving someone you may not know or someone that looks different than you or someone that you don’t like. All without expecting anything in return.
