Bicentennial Prayer
Heavenly Father, source of all good things, in every generation You gather a people to yourself and endow them with the means to spread Your Gospel.
Through Your Son, Jesus Christ, you have formed the parishes and missions of South Carolina into one body working to build your Kingdom across our seven deaneries of Aiken, Beaufort, Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, and Rock Hill.
Through Your Holy Spirit, give us generous and sacrificial hearts as our diocese enters its third century. Transform us into good stewards of the blessings You bestow upon each one of us.
As one family in faith, we pray that our gifts strengthen our parishes and missions, form Catholics to Believe in the Gospel, and guide us to live your Gospel through social outreach.
We ask all of this through our one Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP
So many times in my life, I have failed to start something because I had not yet adequately prepared. I would have started working out or going for a jog, but I needed to get the right shoes. I would have started eating right if only I could find the time and money to buy the right foods. I
would have started that journaling project, but I couldn't without a really nice leather-bound journal. I would have,
I would have, and I would have!
I know many people can relate. We offer up excuses for so many things. Sometimes we even get to the point where
we do start something, but by then, we have already lost so much time.
Some of us are thinking about taking a stewardship way of life seriously, but we are just not ready yet. We would be more generous if we can first get out of debt. We would give of our time, but we have to wait until the kids get
older or until we fully research our options. The truth is, we don't have to be in any particular state of life or have any specific financial portfolio to start giving our very selves to God. God takes us as we are now. No resume
needed. Why waste so much time thinking about getting started and becoming serious? Time is a gift given to all of us. As we think and prepare endlessly, we are practicing
poor stewardship. The time to start is today. Who wants to answer God one day at the gates of Heaven saying,
"I would have."? - Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
LIVE THE LITURGY
We have heard the story of the Good Samaritan so many times. Have we ever realized that it is an enemy and outcast who is the hero of the story? Freed from laws that limit acts of mercy and
compassion, the Samaritan becomes the example of how to love God by loving our neighbor. Our minds know what our faith
teaches, and our mouths know what words to speak. Ultimately, deep down in our conscience, we know how we ought to act. Yet,
as we encounter each new day, do we always do what we are called to do? Our neighbors live next to us and far away. They are
down the street, sitting beside us, living in Mexico, Honduras, Ecuador, Guatemala, Poland, Russia, China, Korea, and Iraq. Our neighbors are even found in people who want to hurt us. How do we love them as Jesus asks us to? How we answer this question
will determine how much we really love God.
Polonia, Rusia, China, Corea e Irak. Nuestro prójimo se encuentra incluso en personas que quieren lastimarnos. ¿De que manera los amamos como Jesús nos lo pide? La forma en que respondamos a
esta pregunta determinará cuánto amamos realmente a Dios.

July 21– The Witness of Christian Art in History
GOSPEL MEDITATION Loving isn't too difficult, right? Many of us are surrounded by kind, lovely
people trying to do the right thing. Indeed, to "love ? your neighbor as yourself" seems like it should be easy enough. Treat people like you would like to be treated. Bring the new neighbors some baked goods (normal and
gluten-free, just in case). Chat with the bank teller about his holiday weekend. Write an occasional card to your sister "just because." There were
probably varieties of these acts of kindness in Jesus' day. Perhaps substituting figs for cookies. But "exchange pleasantries with the traveling
cloth merchant" isn't the example Jesus gives.
"A man fell victim to robbers... they stripped him and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead." The righteous pass by the scene of the dying
man. The hero of the story is the one on the margins of Jewish society, who perhaps would not have been welcomed, in other circumstances, by the
man now in the ditch. His neighborly love causes him to halt his journey, to tend wounds, and to pay for the man's care out of his own savings. Are we
interruptible? Are we attentive to the hurts of others? Are we generous with our money and possessions?
In the past few weeks, who has crossed your mind as someone in need of help? Perhaps it's an acquaintance suffering from cancer. Maybe you were invited to donate or volunteer to a local social cause, but it just won't stick in your mind (or schedule) to make it happen. The needs of people are many and varied. We can't help everyone, but God does place opportunities in
our path for compassion and courageous love. This week, be "the one who treated him with mercy."
Help for ALL in Need.
Holy Mary, help those in need,
give strength to the weak,
comfort the sorrowful, pray
for God's people, assist
the clergy, intercede for
religious. May all who
seek your help experience your
unfailing protection.
Amen
