From the Pastor’s Desk...
OF BICYCLES & BALANCE –
Balance is basic. If I’m riding a bike
and I find myself losing balance to the
right, I naturally lean more to the left;
too far to the left, compensate by
leaning more to the right; too fast,
slow down; too slow, speed up. In a recent column titled
“Justice Kennedy and the Privatization of Meaning” (see
the Pastor’s Portion of our homepage), David Brooks
wrote: “Justice Anthony Kennedy didn’t invent the shift
from community to autonomy, but in 1992 he articulated
it more crisply than anyone else: ‘At the heart of liberty is
the right to define one’s own concept of existence, of
meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human
life.’
In this sentence, which became famous as the “mystery
of life” passage, there is no sense that individuals are
embedded in a social order. There is no acknowledgment
of the parts of ourselves that we don’t choose but inherit
— family, race, social roles, historical legacies of
oppression, our bodies, the habits that are handed down
to us by our common culture.
There’s no we. We are all monads who walk around with
our own individual opinions about existence, meaning
and the universe. Each person is a self-created choosing
individual, pursuing individual desires. There is no sense
that we are part of a common flow connecting the past,
present and future; instead, each of us creates our own
worldview anew.”

THANK YOU – We have signed a contract to renovate
St. Ann Church Hall with a new kitchen and upgraded
bathroom facilities at a cost of $75,500. Thanks to
careful stewardship of resources we do have funds on
hand but could use some additional help. We're looking
to receive donations of $25,000 to assist us in meeting
our budget. If you are able to contribute please make
your check payable to St Ann Parish and write
CHURCH HALL KITCHEN in the memo line. Thank
you in advance for your help. We hope you will enjoy
the new kitchen and bathrooms.
TRIDUUM – This year we are resuming our tradition
of extending the celebration of our patron saint over
three days culminating on July 26, the Feast of Saints
Ann and Joachim the parents of Mary and the
grandparents of Jesus. St. Ann is the patron saint of
many people and causes, but her designation as the
patron saint of miners grabs me. A miner is someone
who exerts great effort, digs below the surface, takes
risks in search of hidden treasure. This year, we have
invited Dr. Angela Franks to share with us the treasures
she has mined from the encyclical letter Of Human Life,
issued by Pope Paul VI fifty years ago on July 25, 1968---
the eve of the Feast of Saints Ann and Joachim, the only
married couple at that time to share a feast day.
On the evening of Wednesday July 25 our
parish will sponsor a lecture titled
Humanae Vitae @50: Church
Teaching for the #MeToo Moment.
The lecture will be given by Dr. Angela
Franks, Professor at the Theological
Institute for the New Evangelization, St. John’s
Seminary, Boston MA. For more on Dr. Franks see our

vitae and her recent article in America magazine titled
“Humanae Vitae @50: Church Teaching for the #MeToo

ECLIPSE – I just read that this July 27, the day after
the feast of the married couple Ann and Joachim, most
earthlings will be able to view the longest total lunar
eclipse of the century. This upcoming extended eclipse
nature’s night-light, leads me to wonder if we might be
living through an eclipse of the light offered to us by our
very nature.

St. Ann Food Pantry - In just two months,
our new food pantry has already helped
parishioners and friends in need. While the
pantry still is well stocked—thanks to your generous donations—
there are specific items we could use: diapers (any size), baby
wipes, paper towels, toilet paper, cooking oil, juice, bagged beans
(black or red), bagged rice, laundry detergent, cleaning products
(including dishwashing liquid). Donations can be left anytime on
the front porch of the parish office. Many thanks for your help.
The food bank, located below the Parish Office and is open today
and on the third Sunday of the month, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Parent Talk
Last summer I wanted to make sure that—in the busy pace
of our summer—our family prayer didn’t get neglected. My
pastor suggested we keep prayer journals. We went to an
office-supplies store to buy some pretty journals. I explained
that this would be where we would write requests to God for
ourselves, petitions for others, but also thoughts and dreams
we want to share with God. I explained that we would
gather each night and write in them together. My daughter
wrote her prayers as letters addressed to God and told him
about her day. My son listed his prayer petitions and drew
pictures “for God.” I recorded my prayers and meditations
about Scripture I read that day. The prayer journals were
the perfect devotion. It felt as though I was talking to a
good friend, and my children even enjoyed keeping journals.

Volunteers Needed
Wedding Greeters help make parish weddings
more graceful by helping our pastor with simple set-
up and by offering hospitality to the wedding party
and their guests. Any parishioner who is outgoing
and friendly is encouraged to be part of this ministry.

Altar Servers/Youth assist the priest at Mass.

series of gatherings to share
the richness of the Catholic
Church in September. These
weekly sessions are open to adults who are not baptized, as
well as those who are baptized from Protestant backgrounds,
or baptized Catholics who have not received their sacraments
of First Communion or Confirmation.

YOUNG ADULTS
July 24th - HOLY HOUR Come join us for our monthly Holy
Hour on Tuesday, July 24th at 7:30
p.m. We'll spend time in adoration
(with music and silent prayer time),
and the sacrament of reconciliation will be available. We'll
then move to the youth room for some snacks and
fellowship, closing with night prayer at 9:30. We hope you

The economic crisis in Venezuela has led to the largest
displacement of people in Latin American history. With the
average monthly income now as low as $3, more than 82% of
the population lives in poverty. Furthermore, a medicine
shortage and collapsed health infrastructure have led to a rise
in diseases, like Zika, thought to have been eradicated. All of
this has caused more than 1.5 million Venezuelans to flee to
neighboring countries to access the most basic goods &

Catholic Women’s Conference 2018
Join us for a day of friendship, prayer and growth in your faith
at the 2018 Catholic Women’s Conference. This year’s theme
is “Daughters of the King” and the day will be devoted to
helping women discover their foundational identity as
daughters of the King of Heaven and Earth. Saturday, October
27, 2018, 9am-4pm, at the National Shrine of Our Lady of
Czestochowa in Doylestown, PA. Talks will be offered in
English, Spanish and American Sign Language. A mid-
