———CALENDAR OF THE WEEK——— !!!!

Dear Parishioners and Visitors, Welcome to Holy Week. The cries of Hosanna that

begin this Mass of the Palm Sunday end with the cries of

“Crucify Him!” as we transition into Passion Sunday. And

this week concludes with the Sacred Triduum, or Sacred

“Three Days,” beginning Thursday.

By way of history, our Triduum celebration is de-

rived from the Jerusalem Liturgy of Holy Week, as record-

ed by a pilgrim to the Holy Land in the year 380. She rec-

orded in her diary that they celebrated ONE celebration,

spread across three days. It began in the “Upper Room,”

where Jesus celebrated the Last Supper, with a recalling of

the Lord’s washing of feet, and the consecration of Eucha-

rist. Then they processed down to the Garden of Gethsem-

ane, where they kept vigil until midnight. Then, the next

day, they gathered at Calvary for a reading of the Passion,

the veneration of the Lord’s Cross, and a sharing in the Eu-

charist that was consecrated the previous day. Then, gath-

ering about midnight at the Lord’s tomb, they began the

Vigil with the lighting of the Pascal candle, a reading of all

the stories of salvation history from Scripture, the Baptism

and Confirmation of Catechumens, and just as the sun was

coming up, the Easter proclamation of the Lord’s resurrec-

tion. Since it was inexpedient for most people to travel to

Jerusalem for that celebration, the Roman Church decided

to bring the Holy Land to every parish, which is why we

too begin with Mass on Holy Thursday, create our own

Garden of Gethsemane, venerate the Lord’s cross on Good

Friday, and continue that ONE celebration spread over

three days, concluding with the Easter Vigil. I hope that

you will join in the celebrations this week and take in the

beauty of the Sacred Triduum. God bless,

Fr. Michael

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

What are we supposed to do with our old palms? Accord-ing to the Code of Canon Law, blessed items-such as palm

branches-are not to be discarded in a trash can, but treated with respect (cf.#1171). Palm branches are set apart by a blessing

from the priest and made into a “sacramental,” an object that is meant to draw us closer to the celebration of the seven sacra-ments. Throwing them in the trash ignores their sacred pur-pose and treats them like any other object we no longer need. That being said, your old palm branches should return to na-ture by being burned or buried in order to properly dispose of them. This type of disposal honors their sacred purpose and returns them to the earth in a dignified way. Ashes from the burned palms can be placed in your flowerbed or garden, as

can the whole palms themselves.

PERSONAL PRODUCTS - SUCCESSFUL DRIVE! The Women’s Empowerment Ministry would like to extend their

gratitude to the parish for the wonderful response to the request

for personal products. Thanks to your contributions, many pink

care bags, filled with essential, personal care items, will be dis-

tributed to Safe Harbour and other organizations. Each bag will

include a personal card extending our wishes for strength and

hope to every recipient. Once again, OLGC has shown generos-

ity and caring in a most significant way.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE from the

Office of Family Life Education (A Hope Ap-

peal Agency)

The Passion of Jesus makes it clear, no one es-capes suffering. Suffering is inevitable but no one should suf-fer alone. That is one of the primary roles of families, to stand with and support each other in suffering.

are concerned-approved local customs.” (Apostolic Constitu-
