> CETMAR: Public foundation born in 2001,

promoted by the Government of Galicia

(Departmenfs for Fisheries and Dep. for R+D)

and by the Spanish Ministry for Science and

innovation. Based in Vigo - GALICIA.

CETMAR PROJECTS FOCUSED ON MARINE LITTER

OMAR (Environ. Observatory in port activities)

3R-FISH (Integ. Management of “fishing waste”)

NPB (Nothing over board: cleaning the seabed)

PESCAL (Sustainable fisheries in clean grounds)

The involvement and pro-active participation of

all key fishing-related stakeholders are always

essential for the success of these projects

Page 5: Sailing towards a 'Guardians of the Sea‘ horizon · Sailing towards a 'Guardians of the Sea‘ horizon: CETMAR actions in marine litter with the fishing industry. International

Aim: to analyse waste production and

management in the maritime ports closely

related with fishing industries.

Environmental Observatory on solid

waste from fishing and port activities

Actions-results:

>Diagnose of waste generation and disposal in

all Galician coast´s ports.

>Data Base accessible to stakeholders.

>Edition of tec. reports and public dissemination.

>International Seminar.

> “At pier” educational “interventions”.

> Objective → to improve the quality of marine

waters through the correct use-handling,

management and recycling of 3 principal types

of waste generated by the fishing industry: nets

+ EPS boxes + batteries and lights -long line-

… by establishing an innovative system for

management and recovery/recycling of those 3

wastes, technical and economically sustainable

Page 9: Sailing towards a 'Guardians of the Sea‘ horizon · Sailing towards a 'Guardians of the Sea‘ horizon: CETMAR actions in marine litter with the fishing industry. International

Project actions:

>Sector diagnose: amount of “3 wastes”

produced by the f-fleet and by f-ports.

>Pilot experiences in management (Technical

evaluations of recycling processes)

> Stydy of the viability in order to establish-

transfer thoses P.exp to other ports.

Global data of waste collected-recyced

> P.Exp Nets: ≈ 748 ton

> P.exp of EPS:174 ton

> P.exp. BATTERIES: 33,5 ton

Fishing for litter actions

-Fleet involved: ≈ 152 vessels

(small scale fisheries ships +

offshore trawlers),

- ≈ 600 fishermen

-Ports:11 ports

General aim → 1st approach to evaluate the

extent of the problem on off shore and inshore

waters

Specific goals :

>Environmental diagnose

>Design of a management protocol

>Rising awareness and strength habits and

participation aptitudes

3 Actions being implemented:

- Marine litter collection “NPB” by the fishermen

-Ghost fishing trials

- Specific campaigns directed to

remove/collect litter in particular coastal areas

using fishing ships

Sustainable fisheries on

clean grounds (ongoing)

2012-2014 + Funding MARM + Spain + Partners

>Involvement of fishermen is essential

>Adequate modus operandi

>Feasible transfer-implementation of 3R-Fish

scheme to other port/port network

>Need for a wide European “FfL” scheme in

support of collecting and monitoring to MSFD

requirements

Some lessons gained from the projects

Page 16: Sailing towards a 'Guardians of the Sea‘ horizon · Sailing towards a 'Guardians of the Sea‘ horizon: CETMAR actions in marine litter with the fishing industry. International

>”To prepare” the industry in the view of the new

envir. political scenarios (IMP-MSFD, CFP)

> Need for a further development of initiatives

like these, by extending the tasks to those of

“Guardian of the sea”.

> Fishing vessels suitable as "platforms” to

support marine research: logistic support,

monitoring, use of empiric-knowledge…
