The involvement and pro-active participation of

all key fishing-related stakeholders are always

essential for the success of these projects

Aim: to analyse waste production and

management in the maritime ports closely

related with fishing industries.

all Galician coast´s ports.

Integral Management Model for

recovering and recycling of nets,

lights +batteries, and EPS.

> Objective → to improve the quality of marine

waters through the correct use-handling,

management and recycling of 3 principal types

of waste generated by the fishing industry: nets

+ EPS boxes + batteries and lights -long line-

… by establishing an innovative system for

management and recovery/recycling of those 3

wastes, technical and economically sustainable

Project actions:

>Sector diagnose: amount of “3 wastes”

produced by the f-fleet and by f-ports.

>Pilot experiences in management (Technical

evaluations of recycling processes)

> Stydy of the viability in order to establish-

transfer thoses P.exp to other ports.

> P.Exp Nets: ≈ 748 ton

> P.exp of EPS:174 ton

3 Actions being implemented:

- Marine litter collection “NPB” by the fishermen

-Ghost fishing trials

- Specific campaigns directed to

remove/collect litter in particular coastal areas

using fishing ships

Some lessons gained from the projects

>”To prepare” the industry in the view of the new

envir. political scenarios (IMP-MSFD, CFP)

> Need for a further development of initiatives

like these, by extending the tasks to those of

“Guardian of the sea”.

> Fishing vessels suitable as "platforms” to

support marine research: logistic support,

monitoring, use of empiric-knowledge…
