Dear Friends of the Foundation,
We don’t just think about everything health care is today, we care to imagine everything it could be - we are lookingto the horizon.
In this annual report we have shown how your charitable donations are impacting the lives of people and thehealth of communities. This past year we were able to disburse close to $850,000 from our Fund for Better Care(unrestricted) as well as other restricted funds.
The success of our Foundation has been built upon and sustained by the relationships we create and maintainwith our donors, with our volunteers, with our physicians, staff and with our healthcare partners.
How are we looking to the horizon?
• The Foundation is planning for the future and preparing for our move to the new hospital in early 2011.
• Our Donor Recognition Committee has been busy designing recognition elements so that our donors arerecognized for their past and future gifts and deceased family members can be remembered.
• We are planning today for our hospital’s needs of tomorrow. A special “Building A Bridge to the Future”Legacy Society donor wall was unveiled last September and will be brought to the new hospital.
Some key messages that we would like to reinforce with you are that all funds raised by the Foundation arespecifically earmarked for equipment or education needs and cannot be used to support “operational costs” ofthe hospital. We are a separate entity, with a separate budget from the hospital, whose founding and ongoingpurpose is to raise funds for the hospital.
We would also like to reiterate that the Foundation is the only source of funding to support vital ongoing medicalequipment needs for SAH patients across the Algoma District on an annual basis. Year after year, there are newequipment needs that we will continue to fundraise for. These needs will continue even after we move into thenew hospital.
In the face of tough economic times, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for yourgenerosity and compassion and respectfully ask for your continued consideration and support as we look to thehorizon. You truly help to make our success stories possible!

The SAHF’s Wedding ProgramCelebrating the second year, we are happy to announce an increase in the number of couples that have chosen toparticipate in our Wedding Program. This year we also received donations to this unique program for a 50thWedding Anniversary celebration.
By choosing to forego the traditional wedding bonbonnieres by making a donation to the SAHF in honour of yourguests, your gift helps to enrich the lives of countless future patients.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to those couples who choose to share their happy day and we wishthem a life filled with health, happiness, love and contentment.
The decision for us to make a donation to the SAH Foundation, inhonour of our guests, in lieu of traditional wedding favours wasvery easy. We are extremely grateful and impressed by thededication of the Foundation and the awareness it has created inour community for the need to raise funds for new medicalequipment and upgraded patient facilities.
We are by no means the first to do so but only hope that we haveinspired others to follow suit. We realize the challenges facing theHospital and the Foundation and felt the donation would be mostappropriate since it would benefit everyone in the community, notonly those in attendance.
The SAH Foundation has become the charity of choice in ourhousehold due to the impact the hospital has on our community. We hope that others recognize and appreciate the efforts of theFoundation and donate to a charity that has tremendous impacton our local health care system.

The Glidescope is a life-saving, state-of-the-art videocamera attached to a video screen which can bepositioned in the throat to visualize the airway. It allowseasier endotracheal intubation while placing critically illpatients on life support.
In addition, it allows us to remove foreign bodies in theairway and assess for epiglottitis - a potentially fatalthroat infection. It is also a very useful tool in instructingresident and medical students in the emergency airwaymanagement since it projects a video on to a monitor.
Temporary Pacemaker
A pacemaker is an electronic device which helps yourheart beat regularly. Most often, pacemakers are used tospeed up the heart rate when it is too slow. Pacemakersalso can be used to slow the heart rate if it is too fast, orhelp it beat regularly, if it is irregular. An abnormal heartrate or rhythm may occur after open heart surgery, aftera heart attack or may also occur with other types of heartdisease. The temporary pacemaker is used until apermanent pacemaker is placed or changed.

“Over $81,000 has been allocated from the Foundation to purchase these units that had failedprematurely. Medical and surgical equipment is cleaned, decontaminated and prepared using thewasher/decontaminators. Without this equipment, the hospital would have to cancel surgeries.”

SAULT AREA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION Annual Report 2008~2009 14
The Sault Area Hospital Foundation’s Tribute Gift Program provides donors with the opportunity to expresstheir joy, gratitude or sympathy by making a gift in honour or in memory of someone dear to them.
In Honour gifts are a wonderful way to celebrate a milestone or special moment such as the birth of a child,a wedding, birthday, anniversary, graduation or any other happy occasion. It is also a great way to express
gratitude or pay tribute to a special someone you respect and admire.
In Memoriam gifts are often made by friends and family at funerals in lieu of flowers but, are also madethroughout the year in remembrance.
Season’s Greetings gifts are a simple and heartwarming way during the holiday season to let others knowthat you care enough to send them something special while helping the present and future patients of the
Sault Area Hospital at the same time.

SAULT AREA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION Annual Report 2008~200915
Last year was an extremely sad year as I lost mymother, Sharon Hughson to cancer. She was anincredible person who loved her family, spoilingher grandchildren, her crafts, being organized anda great bargain.
During her hospital stay, she still maintained theutmost organization. Lists were made, time wasmonitored and routine followed. I still laughremembering when she ordered myself and twonurses to “sit down” because we were not doingthings properly. The two nurses and I looked at eachother and giggled! As we dutifully sat down werealized she was so sick, and yet she was completelyright.
Fulfilling a Mother’s Wish
Mom had one wish we all promised to fulfill.
Find a way to help the next person going into the hospital.
It was so simple and so important to her.
In January of 2009, I was able to complete my first part of her wish. Dan and I escorted a group of 70people on a Southern Caribbean Cruise with Carnival Cruise Lines. Everyone had a fantastic time. Thewonderful part was that this was our first charity cruise. We were able to present the Sault Area HospitalFoundation with a cheque for $6,962. These funds not only stay in Sault Ste. Marie, but they are usedto purchase much needed equipment for our hospital and provide better care for the patients.
This is a very unique program that is only offered by Carnival and we are extremely excited to launchour 2010 cruise. Once again, we will raise money for the SAHF in support of patient care. We would behonored if you would like to join us next January.
We are so very fortunate to “find a way” for our vacations to turn into helping those needing hospitalcare. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you aboard the Carnival Valor, no better place thana ship named for courage and bravery.

The Sault Area Hospital Foundation’s Business & Community Gifts Program is part of the Annual GivingCampaign, raising funds for priority equipment needs of our Hospital. When we reflect on how generousour community has been over the past year, we recognize that without their support, it would not be possible
for the Foundation to disburse funds to the Hospital annually to purchase equipment hospital-wide.
Thank you to our donors for their generosity and commitment to our Hospital. Over the past fiscal year, ending March 31st, 2009, the Foundation was able to go over goal and raise $104,177.87 from this program! Your gifts not only set a standard of giving, but more importantly touch the lives of the thousands of patients
who walk through our Hospital’s doors each year.
