Many designs have been made over the last 4
centuries but only a few men were recognized asinventors. The first person to invent a working internalcombustion engine automobile was Francois Isaacde Rivaz of Switzerland in 1807. Mixing hydrogenand oxygen for fuel. The first gasoline powered engine was built in 1864by a man named Siegfried Marcus and was said tobe the forerunner to the modern automobile. Itreached speeds up to ten mph.In 1876 two of the greatest engines were invented. The two and four stroke engine by Nikolaus AugustOtto and Sir Dougald clerk. Starting the rise ofeven better and more efficient machine.

The internal combustion of an engine isconsidered to be the heart of the automobile.
They are defined as any engine that uses anexplosive combustion of fuel and air to push apiston within a cylinder. Forming the repeatingcycle known as the strokes.
Intake, Compression, Power Stroke, and Exhaustare the four actions of one stroke.
The difference between the two cycle and fourcycle engine is the number of strokes it uses tostart the fuel reaction of internal combustion.

This starts at thehighest point knownas top dead center
and ends at bottomdead center
The intake stroke
allows the piston tosuck fuel and air intothe combustionchamber through theintake valve port .

Compression starts atbottom dead center andends at top dead center.
The second motion of thestroke takes all the fueland air that was storedand compresses it intoone tenth its originalsizes. Making the air/fuelmixture increase intemperature preparing itfor the next stage in itscombustion cycle .

The power stroke starts assoon as the pistonreaches top dead centerallowing the spark plug toignite.
This electric currentcreated by the spark plugignites the fuel and airmixture sending the pistonback down the cylinderwith a pressure reachinghigh as 600 PSI.

The final stage of thestroke releases all theburned fuel through theexhaust valve.
As the piston moves frombottom dead center to topdead center it takes allthe burned fuel andpushes it out of thecylinder, preparing it forthe next cycle of strokes .

Diesel engines work on the same principleas the two and four stroke engines. They donot need a spark plug to ignite the fuel.
During the intake stroke, air does not mixedwith the fuel in the cylinder. Instead as theair reaches high enough compression Fuelis then sprayed into the cylinder creating
ignition. This pushes the piston down thecylinder at a pressure of 500 PSI, startingthe stroke all over again.

Summary
Internal combustion engines have ultimatelyrevolutionized the way we live. With the small and light weight design of the twocycle engine tasks like trimming the hedges andcutting down weeds became easier and moreefficient. With the power of the four stroke we arenow able to dig up dirt and cut down trees with outeven breaking a sweat. Internal combustionengines have made life easier since the first onewas built in the early 1800s .
