Safety valves release exc ess pre ssure so as to pre ven t damag e to the system. They are usually spring loaded to a pre-set pressure limit. When the pressure in the system reaches this limit the valve will open fully, allowing the excess pre ssure to esc ape . The excess pre ssure is eitherallowed to escape into the atmosphere, or sometimes it is burnt off. Once the excess pressure has been released the valve will close.
