M A T T E R SMagid Helps Viking Alleviate Lacerations and Improve Safety Most people do not think of stainless

steel kitchen appliances as weapons, but stripped down to the pre-manufactured state, the potential for serious injury is high. As a rule, to prevent lacerations to hands and arms, stainless steel must be handled cautiously and with the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in place. For Viking Range, a high-end appliance manufacturer, assembling kitchen appliances is more than providing a beautiful product to consumers—it also means ensuring the safety of its employees.

Before Viking Range partnered with Magid Glove & Safety to equip workers with enhanced cut protection PPE, laceration injuries were an ongoing problem.

“Due to the weight of our stainless steel products, lacerations and strains were a big issue,” says Nancy Tharp, health and safety risk manager at Viking Range. “Stainless steel has very sharp corners; if you handle it wrong, it can slice just like a box cutter or a razor.”

According to Tharp, 50 percent of workers compensation injuries were lacerations and, due to the weight of the equipment, 50 percent were sprains and strains. Multiple vendors were brought in to survey the Viking facility

and make suggestions to alleviate the laceration problem. Although vendors suggested a variety of glove options, most did not have the necessary cut protection to stand up to the steel.

“In the past, we tried a number of gloves that did not work,” recalls Tharp. “I would check on them about 20 minutes after we got the gloves and it looked like rats had been chewing on them—that’s how much the steel tore them up.”

After various attempts to find the best PPE to tackle the laceration issue,

Viking turned to Magid. Viking’s Magid rep conducted surveys and spoke with the purchasing department, plant managers and employees to quickly provide PPE samples of Magid’s K-ROC cut-resistant gloves and protective sleeves to address the problem. The reps hands-on, involved approach solved the issue.

“Once everyone got on the same page, we started using the Magid gloves and sleeves,” Tharp added. “It is remarkable how much this has reduced the number of lacerations.”

One of the highlights of working with Magid was Viking’s tour of the Magid facility in the Chicagoland area. Tharp was excited to experience Magid’s PPE manufacturing process first-hand.

“It is an eye opening experience to actually see the products being made that keep our staff safe,” says Tharp.

As a result of Magid’s proactive approach, Viking chose Magid Glove & Safety as its single source supplier for all its PPE. In addition to the Magid K-ROC gloves and sleeves, Magid also provides first aid supplies, disposable respirators, safety glasses and other routine safety products for Viking.

“Magid K-ROC gloves have helped tremendously lower our lacerations. So far this year I have only seen one laceration because the employee wasn’t wearing his gloves,” adds Tharp. “Magid’s successful, spot-on products have really opened the eyes of our workers regarding safety.”

Pipe fabricators and workers who adapt pipe systems for various uses through welding, grinding, chemical

treatments and other processes, are at high risk for hand and eye injuries. Efficient pipe fabrication, like anything else, begins with a sound safety plan with a head-on approach to these hazards. Team Industries, Inc., a well-known pipe and vessel fabrication company, knows the risks involved in their work and is committed to providing a safe work environment for its employees.

As a result, Team Industries requires all fabricators to wear Magid’s WeldPro Goatskin All Leather Gloves with Aramax XT Liner, which have level 4 cut resistance. This requirement has been instrumental in keeping employees safe and lost-time injuries at bay.

“Since we’ve started using the Magid WeldPro Goatskin Gloves, which are an ANSI cut level 4, we have had multiple instances with employees running grinders into their hands, but thanks to these gloves, we have had no injuries to report,” explains Herbie Peveto, Texas facility shop manager. The cut resistance level of the gloves prevented the welders from being injured by the grinders. Team Industries has several facilities and knows the value of each shop sharing its successes across the company. A ‘near miss’ at the Texas facility was the catalyst that inspired the mandatory use of Magid’s WeldPro Goatskin All Leather cut resistant gloves throughout the company for all applications that use grinders. “That’s all our shops,” explains Peveto. “Anybody that uses a grinder during the day has to wear them.”

James Knowles, HR and safety assistant manager at Team Industries, echoes Peveto’s satisfaction with using welding gloves company-wide. “They have worked out tremendously! We have had a total of five ‘near misses’ in the past two months; every single time accidents were avoided because of those gloves,” explains Knowles. “We have definitely put the gloves to the test.”

If the gloves had not stopped the grinders, these instances would have resulted in stitches or more severe injuries. Speaking about the mandatory cut level protection of the Magid gloves, Kris Levanetz, HR and safety manager, says: “It does two things. First, it allows the person to stop what they are doing because they realize that a grinder is cutting through the glove and second, the cut resistance stops it from going any further.”

The partnership with Magid has helped Team Industries stay on top of the best Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for various applications and has provided the company with several cost-effective solutions for reducing injuries. “It’s nice to have our rep come out as often as they do and sit down with us,” says Knowles. “Our rep goes over what we need, or what we could do to improve on the things we have.”

Staying on the Same PageAccording to shop manager Peveto, everyone in the company is aligned when it comes to safety. A lunchroom calendar shows the number of days the plant has operated without an injury; each box is colored in when a day is concluded without an incident. In addition to weekly safety huddles, safety committees and third-party safety meetings occur once per month. “The meetings also give everyone a chance to voice their opinion and bring up any safety-related issues that may need to be addressed,” explains Knowles. “Every employee does a weekly work area inspection of the space they are in.”

Company-Wide Cut Protection Keeps Injuries at Bay for Team Industries

“We have had multiple instances with employees running grinders into their hands, but thanks to these gloves, we have had no injuries to report.” –Herbie Peveto, Team Industries

The use of job-specific PPE and safety committees, who provide real-time guidance, are among the safety precautions in place at Team Industries to ensure the safest work environment possible.“We have safety huddles once a week with different departments in the shop,” explains Peveto. “We’re really focused on safety; it’s something we talk about on a daily basis.” The safety huddles include foremen from the various departments within the plant—loading, welding, fabricating, quality control, receiving and maintenance.

Despite Team Industries’ emphasis on safety, within each fabrication facility workers encounter numerous situations where safety is especially challenging. Other challenges include ear protection from high noise levels in the shop and heat exposure during the summer months. To combat these issues, Team Industries requires the use of safety glasses and earplugs in addition to cut-resistant gloves for all employees. During hot months, workers are given an electrolyte replacement to prevent dehydration along with frequent breaks with access to fans and air-conditioned rooms as necessary.

The “Eyes” Have It...The next issue Team Industries plans to tackle with Magid’s assistance is eye protection. “We are working on a new eye protection program, where each employee will be fitted with their own personal pair of glasses instead of everyone just using one pair of generic sized glasses,” explains Knowles. “Our reps have been doing a good job of helping us find glasses that are suitable for our environment.”

This unique eye program will take a bit more time and effort than a standard program, but the safety professionals at Team Industries feel that the extra effort is more than worth the safety payoff. “Making sure that we provide adequate protection that works, doesn’t fog up and is comfortable for employees is vital,” says Levanetz. “By investigating different glasses, and fit-testing people for their glasses, we’ve already been able to cut the percentage of injuries back considerably.”

Magid’s WeldPro Goatskin All Leather Gloves with Aramax XT Liner effectively protected fabricators’ hands from cuts and abrasions due to the ANSI level 4 cut resistance. These gloves are now required PPE for all Team Industries’ fabricators.

Each year a safety calendar is posted in the Industries lunchroom that shows the number of days the plant has operated without an injury.

Johnson Controls International, a company that manufactures automotive seating, has a fresh

perspective on delivering safety and personal protective equipment (PPE) to employees. The company has recently switched to a new distribution system using a Magid-supplied PPE vending machine. The successful system was originally tested at its Northwood, Ohio facility and has also been implemented at the Sycamore, Illinois facility.

Before implementing the vending machine program, plant and shift managers were required to manually distribute safety equipment to workers on a daily basis. This important, but time-consuming task could often slow productivity and took up a good deal of the managers’ time each shift.

Scott Gilliam, health and safety manager at Johnson Controls, worked with his Magid rep to address this issue. Gilliam’s rep suggested Magid’s vending machine program, which enables companies to stock the machine with frequently used PPE and for employees to use the vending machine to replace their PPE as needed. In addition, the vending machine program frees-up managers to focus on other responsibilities and provides a new level of control over documentation of PPE. The vending machine program allows for more accurate budgeting and forecasting of product allocations because it helps safety professionals track usage and consumption directly from the machine.

A Well-Organized ProgramAccording to Gilliam, the vending machine improved many of the safety processes within the plant. Not only does it give 24/7 availability to employees, it also ensures that proper hand protection is worn. “It meets the OSHA regulations for workplace safety and it supports the union safety commitments,” says Gilliam. “It also makes our jobs easier, more effective and is proven to save precious time during shifts for our management team.”

Among other benefits, Magid has provided cost savings for Johnson Control on gloves and provided first aid equipment such as bandages, back braces, wrist braces and more. “They’ve helped me to create more of a one-stop shop,” explains Gilliam.

Reducing Injuries One Glove at a Time...Prior to working with Magid, Johnson Controls were using a different safety supplier at their Sycamore facility. Gilliam says the other supplier recommended gloves that were more costly, had a lower cut rating and appeared dirtier faster due to a light color. Gilliam turned to Magid to find a higher level cut glove that would reduce lacerations and perform better. Johnson Controls now uses D-ROC® ANSI cut level 2 gloves.

“One year into using the D-ROC glove, I have zero lacerations,” explains Gilliam. “I have a better cut rated glove, a lower cost for each pair and I can change the color of the glove to aid in covering up the dirt, which expands the longevity of the glove a bit more.”

Now, each Johnson Controls vending machine carries two types of gloves, two styles of safety glasses and two types of knives. Employees use ID badges to obtain items in the vending machine. Each ID badge has a barcode that tells the machine which items an employee has clearance to use. “With all the controls on the devices, it works very smoothly, very easily,” Gilliam mentions.

Other Benefits of Working with MagidRecently, Gilliam asked his Magid rep for help designing a glove specifically for Johnson Controls’ foundry workers.

Gilliam also praised Magid’s order speed and continued commitment to delivering cost-effective, top-quality safety solutions. The partnership with Magid has extended beyond providing safety equipment for Johnson Controls employees. Recently, Magid donated gardening gloves to a special project in which Gilliam was involved. The project benefited and educated special needs adults and children by teaching them how to create raised garden beds.

“I knew I could count on Magid to provide top-notch safety equipment for the company,” says Gilliam. “But it really meant a lot to have their support with this special project as well. Going that extra mile shows what a great company Magid is and I’m happy to have them as my safety partner.”
