M A T T E R SNo Safety Issue is Too Hot to Handle for Magid & Amphenol Corporation When Amphenol Corporation, a manufacturer

of electrical connectors for the aerospace and commercial markets, needed a custom-made cover mitt for the workers in the die cast department, they turned to the trusted experts at Magid Glove & Safety for help.

Amphenol’s die cast department handles hot parts and hot molding dyes all day every day. “They need superior hand protection to do this without injuring themselves,” says Vickie Hills, buyer at Amphenol Corporation.

The company was using a cover mitt from another supplier which workers wore over the die cast gloves for a layer of extra protection when handling hot molds. Amphenol’s safety department was happy with the overall quality of the cover mitts it was using, but felt that a minor modification of the mitts—to make them longer—would help the company avoid a few more minor injuries. Hills put in the request with the (non-Magid) supplier to make the modification. When the modified mitts arrived the supplier had also decreased the width of the mitts, which meant the operators could no longer fit the mitts over their gloves. Amphenol requested that its supplier make further modifications; unfortunately, this process dragged on for months, without success.

Hills worked with Magid in the past and knew of its reputation for custom-made personal protective equipment (PPE); Hills decided it was time to call Magid. Hills provided a sample of an incorrect mitt with instructions on what to change. It only took two trials before Magid came up with the exact mitt the company needed—the Magid KVHP11. The company uses approximately 155 mitts per month, as they are intrinsic to the safety and well-being of Amphenol’s die cast department.

“The die cast operators are very pleased with the cover mitt Magid created,” says Hills. “The newly configured mitt extends the service life for the glove that is worn inside of it, providing a significant cost savings for our plant.”

Purchasing the KVHP11 from Magid has resulted in a 39% savings over the previous supplier.

While Amphenol Corporation has monthly meetings to address safety issues and create working solutions, the cover mitt was a safety issue which was solved by a coordinated effort between Amphenol purchasing, Amphenol production and Magid Glove & Safety.

“We were able to give Magid specifications for a cover mitt and they produced it for us quickly. In most issues around the safety of our workers, speed is of the essence,” says Hills. “It is important to be able to have a safety partner like Magid to tackle safety issues that we cannot address alone. I appreciate the availability of my rep to work on and devise solutions to issues that arise with our PPE.”

Finding the Ideal Fit is a Priority at Austal USAFor some employees at Austal USA,

a global defense prime contractor, perfect fitting personal protective equipment (PPE) wasn’t always easy to find. Austal has several employees with hand deformities that traditional gloves and PPE do not accommodate. It is important that Austal, a company that designs, constructs and maintains revolutionary platforms for the United States Navy, produce quality work on time. It is difficult to accomplish this goal if employees must deal with ill-fitting PPE. To address this issue, Chris Blankenfeld, health, safety and environmental manager at Austal, turned to Magid.

“We have several employees in our shipyard of 3,000 that have some type of hand deformity caused by birth defects, military injury or industry

injury,” says Blankenfeld. “Our Magid rep overheard one of these employees talking to me and immediately offered to work with us to find a solution.”

Austal’s rep informed Blankenfeld that Magid can make special gloves specific to the needs of each employee with a hand deformity. Blankenfeld jumped on this offer without hesitation. Each employee with a special need was fitted for a glove and within a short period of time, each received a modified glove—specific to them. Austal employees were ecstatic with the new products and expressed great satisfaction.

David Lomotan, welder A-class at Austal, lost his middle and ring finger seven years ago in an accident with a table saw. Adapting to everyday tasks has been complicated for him.

When it comes to his job, simple jobs like tightening bolts or performing maintenance on his welder, he has had to make several adjustments to his PPE to accommodate for his missing fingers. Magid created a custom glove that increased Lomotan’s comfort and safety.

“It is difficult sometimes but I have managed to adapt and overcome obstacles,” Lomotan explains. “The special gloves that Magid made for me are excellent. The two fingers I am missing cause slack in normal gloves, which is dangerous because there is no control over the slack. There is often danger that they can get caught in power tools and other equipment. My production along with my safety has increased tremendously. I am very thankful that Magid and Austal were so willing to accommodate my needs. It really has made things easier.”

Magid and Austal worked with all of the employees who required modified gloves increasing morale as well as safety.

“I think the special gloves have assured these workers that their company is looking out for them,” added Blankenfeld.

“With safety equipment that fits properly, workers are much more efficient. As a result of these new modified gloves, production for these employees has gone up and injuries have gone down.”

Not only was Magid willing to work with the specific needs of each employee, they maintained their dedication to affordability. In turn, Blankenfeld was able to provide his employees with the safety equipment needed to improve productivity and safety while keeping costs low.

“There was never an instance where I was told by our representative that Magid could not provide what I wanted when I needed it,” Blankenfeld says. “This is just one amazing example that not only improved safety, but also made our workers feel even more valued and appreciated.”

At Austal USA, all employees have the opportunity to voice their opinion on what direction Austal should take to improve safety processes. Not only did employees drive the need for special gloves for workers with hand deformities, but their ability to highlight the needs of all workers also drove the need for an improved welding glove.

“The glove we had been using did not offer as much dexterity or cut protection as we would have liked,” explains Blankenfeld. “With the help of

the employees at Austal and the Magid team, I was able to test several varieties of welding gloves to find the best one to meet all our needs. After some experimenting to specifically address our needs with variants of our current gloves, the Austal/Magid team designed the (R1292AXW) welding glove.”

With its high level of dexterity, this glove can be used equally well by both the MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welders at Austal. It also has a level of cut resistance that is not found in other welding gloves in the marketplace. This glove by itself replaced four other gloves which were in use at Austal, which resulted in a significant cost savings. Most importantly, Austal has experienced a 40% reduction in hand injuries since using this Magid glove.

“I realize our Magid rep has many other clients,” states Blankenfeld, “but he has never let me down in a pinch. Whether it is designing custom gloves for specific employee needs or coming up with an entirely new glove to meet the needs of Austal, Magid has been an incredible partner.”

“There has never been an instance where I have been told by our rep that Magid could not provide what I wanted when I needed it.”

—Chris Blankenfeld, Austal USA

1 Hazardclassification:Provides specific criteria for classification of health and physical hazards, as well as classification of mixtures.

2 Labels: Chemical manufacturers and importers are required to provide a label that includes a harmonized signal word, pictogram and hazard statement for each hazard class and category. Precautionary statements must also be provided.

3 Safetydatasheets: Will now have a specified 16-section format.

4 Informationandtraining:Employers are required to train workers by December 1, 2013 on the new format of labels, elements and safety data sheets to facilitate recognition and understanding.

Who will be affected by GHS?
