Thenewlabelformat,requiredonallnewproductsafterDecember1,2015,incorporatesthesixsectionsasdepictedabove.ThissameinformationappearsontheSafetyDataSheet(SDS)inSection2(inthenew2012format).
1. ProductIdentifier–thenameofthechemicalorproduct.2. SignalWord—either“DANGER”(severe)or“WARNING”(lesssevere).3. HazardStatements—liststheprimaryhazard(s):i.e.,“Flammableliquidandvapor”.4. PrecautionaryStatements—tellsyoubasicprecautionstotake,suchas:“usewithadequateventilation”,“avoid
breathingvapors”,“wearprotectiveglovesandeyeprotection”.5. SupplierInformation—thenameandcontactinformationforthedistributorormanufacturer.6. Pictograms—theappropriatepictogramsrelatedtothehazard(s)oftheitem.Theremaybemorethanone
pictogram.Youshouldbefamiliarwiththemeaningsofthevariouspictogramsandthesignalwords.Ifyouseeanyoftheseonalabel,youshouldreadtheprecautionarystatementsandconsulttheSDSbeforeusingtheproduct.Here’sanexampleofanoriginallabelinthenewformat:
SecondaryContainerLabelRequirements:Ifyouputachemicalorproductintoasecondarycontainer(towashpaintbrushes,forexample)andyouwanttokeepthiscontainertoreusetheproduct,thecontainermusthave:

OtherLabelInformationonArtMaterialsTheArtandCreativeMaterialsInstitute,Inc.(ACMI)isanon-profitassociationofmanufacturersofart,craftandothercreativematerials.Manysmallcompanies,aswellaslargeones,participateintheACMIproductcertificationprogram.ACMI-certifiedproductseals(APNon-ToxicandCLCautionaryLabeling)indicatethattheseproductshavebeenevaluatedbyaqualifiedtoxicologistandarelabeledinaccordancewithfederalandstatelaws.WhatdotheACMISealsmean?
TheAP(ApprovedProduct)Sealidentifiesartmaterialsthataresafeandthatarecertifiedinatoxicologicalevaluationbyamedicalexperttocontainnomaterialsinsufficientquantitiestobetoxicorinjurioustohumans,includingchildren,ortocauseacuteorchronichealthproblems.SuchproductsarecertifiedbyACMItobelabeledinaccordancewiththechronichazardlabelingstandard,ASTMD4236,andtheU.S.LabelingofHazardousArtMaterialsAct(LHAMA).TheAPsealmeanstheproducthasbeencertifiedtobenon-toxic.
TheCL(CautionaryLabeling)Sealidentifiesproductsthatarecertifiedtobeproperlylabeledinaprogramoftoxicologicalevaluationbyamedicalexpertforanyknownhealthrisksandwithinformationonthesafeandproperuseofthesematerials.TheseproductsarealsocertifiedbyACMItobelabeledinaccordancewiththechronichazardlabelingstandard,ASTMD4236,andtheU.S.LabelingofHazardousArtMaterialsAct(LHAMA).TheCLsealmeansthattheproductlabelindicatespossiblehealthrisksandhazards(youshouldreadthelabel).
