    EVENT LEADERS INSTRUCTIONS

Participants take part in a game of chance using a packof cards and some prepared safety questions.

If we take risks with safety at work or at home we areplaying a game of chance. Sometimes we are luckyand there are no consequences, sometimes we are not

so lucky but are able to avoid the worst consequences...but sometimes someone gets hurt.

    Benefits

    n Broadens participants Safety knowledge

n Potentially highly engaging, having fun

n Reinforces that we should not take unnecessary risks, and always DO THE RIGHT THINGin the workplace

    Avoid the pitfalls

n Set of questions not relevant to the group. Select ordesign questions catering to the interest, knowledge,

and needs of the group. We have provided somequestions, but please design your own. We suggestabout 20 questions will be needed

n Test the game before you plan to use it on Safety Dayso you are well prepared - good facilitation is importantfor this activity.

n Trying to use the game for groups larger or smaller than3 8. If you wish to play the game with larger numbersof people split them into smaller groups each withsomeone to deal the cards and ask the questions

AudienceSuitable for road safety operations, operational site and

project teams - target audience size 3 8. Other groupswill need to design their own questions

TimingTime required to complete the activity is approximately30 minutes.

Content requiredThe Leader explains that if you take unnecessary risks withsafety you are playing a game of chance, where someonecould get hurt, and explains that the game they will playtoday works the same.

One player at a time reveals his card to the group

n Any card containing a number 2 through 10 becomes

a pass (no question is asked). Sometimes you takechances in life without consequences

n If all players have a number card, the leader dealsanother card to each player

n If a player reveals their card and it is a face card(ace, king, queen or jack), the Leader asks thema safety question

n If a player gets the answer to the question wrong, they leave the game (took a risk and lost)

n If the player gets the answer right, they remain in thegame (they have taken a risk and managed to getaway without severe consequences)

    n

When the first round is completed (every player getsa turn) the facilitator deals new cards to the remainingplayers and the cycle is repeated

n Repeat the game if there is enough energy and at least2 players left
