Volunteer Focus Corner

RaymondRerrahasbeenvolunteeringatSafeHavenforovertwoyears.RayoriginallybeganvolunteeringattheSanctuary,butmovedovertotheThriftStore.Raycanbefoundatthestoresortingdonateditems,helpingdonorstounloaditemsfromtheircarsandcheckingelectricalitemsthathavebeendonated.

RaygrewupinNewYorkCity&attendedtechnicalschoolafterservingintheNavy.Inhislatetwenties,RaymovedtoGainesville,FLtoworkforanofficemachinedealer,wherehestayedfor30years.He&twopartnerseventuallypurchasedthecompany.In2001,theysoldthecompanytoa“megadealer”.RaymovedtoLasCrucesin2009toworkasaregionaltechforalargeXeroxdealer.Rayhastwodaughters,oneisanurse&theotherisanAveda-trainedesthetician.BothliveinFlorida.Afterretiringthreeyearsago,Rayrealizedheneededsomethingtokeephimbusy.Asalifelongdoglover,hedecidedSafeHavenwastheperfectplacetovolunteer.ForRay,themainrewardofvolunteeringistheknowledgethathiseffortsarehelpingthedogs&catsofSafeHaven._____________________________________________

Volunteer Coordinator Report

Thenewvolunteerapplicationprocessthroughthewebsiteisworkingperfectly.Itisnowuserfriendlyfromboththeapplicantside,aswellasthecoordinator

side.TherearemanyoptionsforvolunteeringwhetheritbeattheSanctuary,theThriftStoreoroff-siteevents.Triciaisknownforsaying,“Ihaven’tmetavolunteeryetthatIcouldn’tfindsomething

theylovetodo!”Itisherpassiontoplaymatchgametomakeitanenjoyable,rewardingexperience.Whetheryouhaveafewhoursaweek,amonthoronlywanttoworkaspecificeventacoupletimesayear,wecanmakeithappen;allthewhilebenefitingthemanyanimalswecomeincontactwith.

AnothergreatwaytogetinvolvedistocontactTriciaifyou have a group or organization that would like to‘sponsor’ an event. For instance, the Honor SocietymembersfromthreelocalHighSchools(Centennial,LasCruces and Mayfield) have all done their part to findhomes for our animals in a variety of ways. Theyounger set is great at promoting the Facebook page,posting fliers and last, but not least, serving on the“Street Team” to make sure the community andpassersby knowwherewe are andwhywe are there!AggiePAWfromNMSUhasbeenamazingtohelpwithourDogWashesandmore!

Everyyear,petsdieunnecessarilybecausetheirownersleavetheminparkedvehicles,evenfor“justaminute”.Thetemperatureinacarcanincreaseby25°inonly10minutes,andinourhotdesertclimate,thatcanbecomedangerousveryquickly.Andcrackingthewindowswillnotmakeanydifference.Whilehumanshaveasystem

ofsweatglands,animalsdonot,whichleavesthemmorevulnerabletoheatstroke.Animalscansustainbraindamageorevendiefromheatstrokeinonly15minutes.ThenexttimeyouconsiderleavingFidointhecar,askyourself,“HowwouldI

liketobeleftinthishotcarwearingafurcoat?”

HAPPY TAILS Peaches,apitbullterrier,wasbroughttoSafeHavenafterbeingfoundneardeathonthesideoftheroad.BecausePeacheswasnotalwayscomfortablewith

otherdogs,weknewthatitwouldtakeawhiletofindtherighthomeforher.PeachesresidedatSafeHavenfornearly5yearsbeforebeingadoptedbyoneofSafeHaven’sdedicatedvolunteers.Afterbeingadopted,Peacheshasblossomedintothemosthappy&lovingdog.“GeorgiaPeaches”,ashernewfamily

lovinglyreferstoher,hasrecentlygraduatedfromobedienceschool.Peacheshascomealongwayfromthatbrokengirlthatwasfoundonthesideoftheroad—she’sevenbeenseenattendingYappyHourevents.WaytogoPeaches!

Howcutearewe?Thereare6ofusChihuahuapuppies…4girls&2boys.Wewerefoundinalargeboxnexttoadumpsterwithourmomnotlongafterwewereborn.Weareintheprocessofgettingourvaccinations&wewillsoonbefixed.WewillbereadytogotoournewhomesinAugust.Pleaseputinanapplicationifyou’reinterested…wearesuretogofast!
