Karibu!
A dream is about to become true. . . experience Africa with its abundance of wildlife, beauty, tranquillity and endless clear, summer days.Join us on an epic trip through five African countries (Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe); swim, snorkel or scuba in the three Great Lakes of Africa; visit the chimpanzees of Jane Goodall; swing on catwalk bridges over the Victoria Falls; descent into the Ngorongoro Crater after leaving the picturesque Lake Natron with Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano; sleep under African skies in multiple game parks including Serengeti, the most photographed and filmed game park in Africa with and incredibly dense population of wildlife and never-ending rolling plains of grasslands and golden savannah. Serengeti is also the place of the fascinating and dramatic Great Wildebeest Migration. Every year, over 1,5 million white-bearded wildebeest and 250 000 zebras migrate from one side of the park to another in search of fresh grazing. The trek is a true site to behold as many predators snatch up prey along the way; a spectacle of predator versus prey.
This is indeed the best and most exciting adventure in all of Africa,
a photographer's paradise!

DAY 1And it all starts at Elephant Sands Botswana...Hit the road from South Africa early on Friday, of course you have been dreaming, preparing and packing weeks in advance for this huge Africa Big Lake Safari. There is no better place than Elephant Sands to have our bush gala première. Enjoy drinks while awaiting a scrumptious lodge dinner around the fire-place while elephants play at the waterhole a few steps away. After the dinner party we all retire to our luxury en-suite tents around the water hole, each with a unique view of the water hole and numerous elephant paths passing by.
Cannot wait for tomorrow...
5
DAY 2Breakfast and off to the Zambezi Waterfront, Zambia... Possible sunrise and elephant photos early morning. A good bush breakfast puts us on the road to the Kazungula Ferry which will take us across the Chobe River to Zambia, an excellent spot to have our on the road picnic.A short trip takes us to the Zambezi Waterfront on the Zambezi River, a stone throw away from Livingstone and the Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders) in Zambia. From here, stunning views of the river and the spray of the Victoria Falls provides stunning photographic opportunities. A raised wooden deck stretches out over the river with a unique plunge pool, the perfect place to have a sundowner from the open bar while Christine is brewing up an oxtail potjie. A good kuier, preparation of cameras and off to bed in quaint double bed tents.
6
DAY 3Today isVictoria Falls dayZambia...After a good breakfast spread we head off to Victoria Falls. You may wonder if there is a big difference between the Zambian or Zimbabwean side of the Victoria Falls, i.e. the towns of Livingstone vs Victoria Falls? Victoria Falls is the largest sheet of falling water in the world. Although the Zimbabwean side has more viewing points, the Zambian side has amazing catwalk bridges suspended high across the gorge. Every step allows for spectacular bird’s eye view photography. Imagine a picnic lunch at one of the many vistas!Back at the waterfront one can take a dip in the pool, enjoy a cocktail on the deck overlooking the mighty Zambezi River or book a sundowner boat cruise on the river.
Meanwhile the fire will burn high at the ‘Adventure Tented Island’ for the evening’s braai. After a dinner under the stars and lots of talk about the day’s activities we will shut eye in the prepared adventure tents.
Cannot wait for tomorrow...
7
DAY 4Continue through Zambia with a stopover at Eureka Game Farm... While having a quick breakfast one can steal a few opportunistic photos of the ever present vervet monkeys in the combretums surrounding the pool and tents. We now travel to Eureka Game Farm and Lodge on the outskirts of Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. En-route we will travel through various small villages and enjoy a picnic on the road.At Eureka there are a number of tame game and real close-up opportunities of zebra and more.Christine will prepare a traditional South African bobotie dish for dinner. After dinner a few drinks and off to bed in the A-frame chalets. Cannot wait for tomorrow...
8
Trekking through the picturesque Northern Zambia into Tanzania...Day 5:A quick breakfast at Eureka and onto the road. Stop for coffee at Forest Inn. We will be traveling through various villages and have a picnic on the road. Dinner and sleep over at Northern Rock Hotel in Mpika.Day 6:Breakfast at the hotel and back on the road to the Tanzanian border, stopping for a picnic on the road. En-route we will also stop for some good landscape opportunities in the mountainous regions. Dinner and sleep over at Holland Hotel in Sumbavanga, Tanzania.
Cannot wait for tomorrow...
DAY 5 & 6
999
DAY 7Exhilaration! Our first Great Lake, Lake Tanganyika in the Great Rift Valley... After breakfast at Holland Hotel we will continue to drive through more mountains and more beautiful scapes. Lake Tanganyika, one of the three Big Lakes of Africa, is the longest freshwater lake in the world, the 2nd oldest, the 2nd largest by volume and the 2nd deepest after Lake Baikal in Siberia. En route we will stop at a scenic spot for a picnic. For the first time on this journey we will pitch our own tents at Jacobson Beach and Guest House, Kigoma on the beach of Lake Tanganyika at.Take a deep breath and relax for we have reached one of the greatest destinations in Africa. This we will celebrate with a lake sunset, a sundowner and a dinner a la Christine.
101010
DAY 8Today we are going to introduce ourselves to Lake Tanganjika...Snorkel and swim in the lake after a hearty breakfast on the beach and perhaps a fish-braai for lunch. The more adventurous amongst us will tackle the deep with scuba gear in almost gin clear water. Canoeing and fishing are also options. Also, if you do not want to do anything on this day, then you do just that. This is life in paradise - somebody once mentioned that Noah’s arc stranded at Jacobson’s Beach. We will see the day out with Hein’s favourite Chicken Tika Masala kebabs and of course a few interesting cocktails.
Cannot wait for tomorrow the chimps are waiting for us...
111111
DAY 9A visit to an exclusive park, the world famousGombe National Park... A two hour early morning private boat trip (you cannot reach this park by car) gets us to Gombe and in the jungle where the chimpanzee sleeps.A guide will meet us and lead us on a trek into the forest in search of the chimps. Hold thumbs that we manage to meet celebrities like Gremlin, one of the chimps mentioned in 'In the Shadow of Man' who was just a baby at the time. A picnic on Gombe’s beach followed by another trek into the forest. We return to Jacobs Beach on our private boat to have another great sunset and dinner, discussing and sharing in the a world class adventure we just had.
121212
DAY 10Lake to lake, largest lake in Africa, Lake Victoria...Pack up camp early and a quick breakfast puts us back on the road.A winding road through mountains. Crossing the northern part of Kigosi Game Reserve takes us to the outskirts of Mwonsa. An interesting drive with great landscape opportunities and passing a number of small villages. Picnic on the road.At Rocky Bay Lodge we settle into our already pitched tents. Of course some of us will take a dip in Lake Victoria, bucket list: to swim in all three the great lakes of Africa.Later on we meet in the restaurant for a great dinner prepared by our hosts.Do remember that tomorrow is Serengeti, do not stay up too late.Cannot wait for tomorrow...
131313
This is a day of great anticipation, heading into Serengeti National Park... A quick breakfast and off to Serengeti with a hit and run stop at a local market for some shopping, also interesting photo opportunities when crossing a small piece of Lake Victoria with the Kigongo/Busisi ferry. This route will take us along the South Eastern shores of Lake Victoria to enter the western side of the Serengeti. At this time of the year this will be the area where millions of wildebeest and zebra take on their northern migration route. With some luck we might see the famous ‘Gameti river crossing’ where big crocks have their lunch. We pitch camp at Dik Dik camp site, perhaps the most central camp in the Serengeti.A good piece of meat and baked potato on the fire will seal this iconic day.
Cannot wait for tomorrow...
DAY 11
141414
DAY 12Serengeti place of the famous annual migration of wildebeest and zebra...Coffee and rusks before sunrise and into the wild to greet the sun.The hunt with a camera is on in this 5 700 sq mile sanctuary with some 3 000 lions, great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, numerous Nile crocodile, honey badger and many ungulates such as eland, topi, dik dik, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle. The optional hot air balloon safari can also be done in the morning.Stop for a picnic and beers will become the order of the day during our time spent in the Serengeti region. Our quest for the best photos will take us into the sunset with a keen eye on the animals within the landscape.Back at camp we will again celebrate the day with another bushveld braai around a fire.
151515
Mara to Lake Natron, the world’s most picturesque area... After rusks and coffee we break down camp and head North towards the Masai Mara River. The hunt for cats and wildlife in huge landscapes continues. We now travel down to Lake Natron with fantastic views of Ol Doinyo Lengai, ‘Mountain of God’ in the Maasai language which is an active volcano. At lake Natron’s Maasai Giraffe Eco Lodge pitched tents will be waiting for us. Here we will have the opportunity to photograph Maasai men dressed in their red shukas. Red symbolises their culture and they believe it scares away lions.Time to refresh with a sundowner, after a dip in the pool. A dinner will be prepared by our host.
Cannot wait for tomorrow...
DAY 13
161616
DAY 14Lake Natron, the flamingos and the Maasai are waiting...Although Lake Natron is a salt lake due to high levels of evaporation, there are numerous waterfalls with crystal clear water. After breakfast we might take a dip in the lake and thereafter shower under one of these waterfalls! On returning home we can brag that we swam in most of the famous natural lakes of Africa. The awesome landscape with millions of flamingos drawing a pink line between water and mountain backdrop, provide unparalleled photographic opportunities. After lunch we will move to the Ngorongoro gate to pitch our tents and have something to eat. Tomorrow we will descent into the world famous Ngorongoro Crater.
171717
The Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, what more needs to be said... Up early and arrange a minimum of cars to enter the crater, the cars that can seat at least 4 people. With cameras in rapid fire mode we descent into the Ngorongoro Crater: one of the most beautiful natural wildlife safari sites in the world. It is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and home to the highest density of big game in Africa. Ngorongoro is justifiably one of the continent's most famous safari destinations.Back at camp we re-arrange cars and have a grand buffet dinner at Doffa Safari Lodge. Prepare for an early getaway for a rather long push on the road the next day.
What a day this was...
DAY 15
181818
DAY 16The long and winding road towards Lake Malawi...After a quick breakfast, and savouring amazing views of Lake Manyara, we prepare for the long road ahead.Through the mountains to the Southern Tanzanian Highlands we will encounter a number of magical landscapes. After booking in at Iringa Sunset Hotel, and drinks on the wooden deck overlooking Iringa, we will enjoy a welcome dinner. And then shut-eye in spacious en-suite hotel rooms.
Cannot wait for tomorrow...
191919
Onto Lake Malawi, our favourite playground and pool... After a hearty breakfast from our hosts we are back on the road heading for Malawi.A few mountain passes and crossing the border at Mbeya will slow us down. A picnic on the border and an easy road to Maji Zuwa Resort on Lake Malawi follows. On arrival: we book into our chalets, grab our snorkeling equipment and swim along the shallow and crystal clear shoreline, lounge in one of the many hammocks as the staff serves us drinks with the light African breeze keeping the temperature just perfect. As the sun begins to set and dinner is prepared, we gorge ourselves on the best pan crusted tilapia caught that morning by local fishermen.A good night’s rest will evolve into a lazy morning tomorrow.
Cannot wait for tomorrow...
DAY 17
202020
DAY 18Another day in paradise and time is on our side...A slow get up, a coffee, and stroll to the water. Slowly glide out with snorkel and fins and notice the brilliance of colour set beside the submerged rocks of the Great African Rift Valley in which we are immersed. This is the Africa where a clock is not driving us and a planner is not needed for the day. This is where we won't have service on your iphone and where time slows down so that you may enjoy simply being. A scuba dive activity is also not out of the question. After an omelet from the kitchen and perhaps even an early beer we get ready for our trip to the next beach lodge only 2 hours away. After a picnic lunch we will arrive at Butterfly Space - An almost carbon copy of yesterday’s arrival at Maji Zuwa Resort plays itself out with the added bar on the beach, eina!
Cannot wait for tomorrow...
212121
Heading towards our final great adventure, diving at Monkey Bay... A great breakfast by our Rasta friends from Butterfly Space and we are on our way.On a very scenic route on the shores of Lake Malawi we are heading to Fat Monkeys, Monkey Bay next to Cape Maclear grabbing a picnic lunch along the way. After pitching tents and camp at Fat Monkeys we introduce ourselves to management in order to plan a fantastic adventure for the next day.Of course all can relax in the pub while Christine brews up one of her magical dishes.Shut eye in our tents for a good rest because tomorrow is going to be a big jol day.
Cannot wait for tomorrow...
DAY 19
222222
DAY 20
232323
Today is the all-out day for adventure on Lake Malawi...Get up and get ready! A quick breakfast. (The Bar opens at 7am and closes when the party dies.) With the beach on our doorstep, we can take a long refreshing swim in the calm waters of the lake, later organise a scuba dive or snorkel, take a trip out on one of the boats, quietly cruise around on a kayak, venture out on a guided walk taking you through the village and all its wonders, mountain bike around the area or buy something from the local craft market with all its amazing arts and crafts. And then it is sunset.A farewell bush braai and a after party in the bar takes us to bed.
What a place, what a trip?
Malawi to Moçambique... Day 21:A quick jump in the pond and a breakfast. Break down camp and get ready to hit the road, still an amazing trip with baobabs you cannot believe. Picnic at border crossing into Moçambique. At Tete bridge we stay over in Masolosolo Lodge. A neat, safe and secure lodge with great sunset views on the Zambezi river.Dinner at the lodge and accommodation in well appointed en-suite chalets.Day 22:After a good breakfast we travel to Milpark Hotel, Bandula. Picnic on the road.A good hotel dinner and early to bed for the next day’s long final (almost) trek.
DAY 21 & 22
242424
252525
DAY 23Our last big day in Africa, pushing it through Zimbabwe...Early breakfast at the hotel and then it is crunch time. Today we need to go through two borders. This hectic trip will be well compensated for when we reach Magorgor Safari Lodge, a game lodge outside Musina. It is time for celebration: Ÿ cheers to a great tripŸ cheers to friends who became
familyŸ cheers to great food
(Christine will take a bow)Ÿ and cheers to the photos and
memories we will relish for the rest of our lives.
This is celebration, time around a bushveld fire with a great dinner prepared by our hosts, with good friends and good wine.We are a stone throw away from home and sadly tomorrow the real world might catch up with us again...
may this never happen.
Asante sana!
