    9THE RECORD FALL 2014

    DID YOU KNOW?

A GREAT PORTRAIT OF WILLIAMMcKinley (Mount Union 1869), theonly brother who has held the office oUnited States President, hangs in theLevere Memorial emple through thegenerosity o the New York City AlumniAssociation. In 1930, members o thegroup donated the portrait to the SigmaAlpha Epsilon Foundation.

Te painting, which appears to be

unsigned and undated, is attributed toGeorge da Maduro Peixotto in 1899 basedon archival records and appears to depictMcKinley during the Spanish-AmericanWar. Te President is seated with booksand papers set aside nearby and a news-paper containing a headline about theIsland o Luzon and a partial map oManila resting in his lap. However, thepainting may also depict McKinley dur-

ing the Philippine-American War sincethe Island o Luzon and Manila were keystrategic locations in both wars.

utures, and the association is part o that effort.Te New York City Alumni Association

includes roughly 100 members, most o whomconsider the Fraternity to be the top priority intheir lives. Members are not limited to one agedemographic, as Pigmans notes that the asso-ciations membership mainly consists o adultsbetween the ages o 28 to 40. Te goal or thecurrent members is to provide an atmospherewhere younger members resh out o college canbe welcomed into the old as well as provideolder members with the opportunity to be amentor to the less-experienced individuals.

Its great to go out and have un and do el-lowship, but I look at it as we have to promoteourselves. We have to show our guys that broth-erhood doesnt just stop at the chapter house,Pigmans says. Whether thats answering ques-

tions such as Where is a good place to go out?or Wheres a good date spot? or Where can I getmy next job lead? I think thats really the mostimportant role o the alumni association.

aking some o those actors into consider-ation, the New York City Alumni Associationmaintains an overall strategy o requent events tokeep members engaged. Highlights have includedan annual gol tournament, where memberscan interact in a relaxed setting, to events like

the Phoenix Symposium, which is a networkingopportunity with another sorority that includesguest speakers and is also open to undergraduatemembers. Te purpose o the Symposiumis to engage newly graduated brothersand set them on the path to proessionalsuccess as they prepare to graduate romcollege.

Pigmans says organizing successulevents has become almost second-nature

to him. I like to put people together. And Ilike to have un, too. Among the other keyevents the organization hosts are annualCinco de Mayo and Oktoberest gatherings,a holiday charity undraiser or oys or otsand a dinner on Founders Day.

Te New York City Alumni Association is simi-lar to other area alumni associat ions in that it doesnot have a specific chapter or campus to which allmembers belong. And although alumni associa-tions do not have houses like chapters, Pigmanssays a shared venue is a lofy goal o his group. Ithink that everybody involved with this associa-tion shares a similar, larger-scale dream o havingsome sort o real estate in the city. I havent beenshy about this path, Pigmans says. Harvard hasa club here. Yale has a club here. I don't know whythe best raternity in the country cant have one.Tats something weve been working toward, butits a long way away.

In a city nicknamed the Big Apple and ofenregarded or its scale and spectacle, Pigmans andthe rest o the New York City Alumni Associationmembers are looking to channel the energy otheir location and transer it into somethingmuch more intimate.

In one simple word, I want people to think o itas comortable, Pigmans explains. As comort-able as your home. I want pople to think o theorganization just as much as mine as it is yours orany other brothers.
