BACHELOR OF DESIGN

UNDERTAKE THE BACHELOR OF DESIGN AT SAE AND

START YOUR CAREER IN THE LIMITLESS WORLD OF

THE DESIGN INDUSTRY.

Explore all areas of design from typography, pre-press, design

for print media, interaction and interface design, and more.

In this course, you will focus on the creation of visual images

and develop a broad understanding in all areas of the design

industry from graphic to web design and beyond.

You will also study the concepts and methodologies of drawing

using a variety of media with an emphasis on drawing from

life, including anatomical studies, perspective techniques for

environment and character construction.

You will undertake specialised units designed for students to

participate in real-world projects under the guidance of expert

SAE staff. With this unique teaching style, you will demonstrate

your skills and technical knowledge in a collaborative and

creative studio-based learning environment.

Each degree program is broken up into discrete stages

designed to promote different skills:

STAGE i – FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

You will undertake a number of foundational units that will

give you the essential technical skills and knowledge, relevant

to your discipline area, to collaborate with other creative media

students and professionals in later stages of the program.

• Web design

• Project management and professional etiquette

• Critical and creative thinking

• Contemporary industry overview

• Typography

• Design and layout

• Fundamentals of drawing.

Stage II – Interdisciplinary Projects,

Media and Cultural Studies

In Stage II, you will participate in simulated project groups, working

towards large-scale deliverables each trimester. We will get you to

apply your Stage I skills in a deeper context and help

you work within the contemporary creative media workforce.

You will also learn how your work contributes to and interacts with

broader culture and media practice. This knowledge will enable you

to work with a variety of other disciplines and artists to expand your

potential on the global stage.

You will complete a number of real-world projects with students

not only in your own discipline, but in all other SAE disciplines.

In Stage II, you will be given the opportunity to work as a project

specialist. The types of projects and project roles you choose to

undertake will determine what area of specialisation you fall within.

Stage II has studio modules with projects based on

the following areas:

In the Graphic Design specialisation, you will hone the skills learnt

in Stage I. You will further explore typography, design for print and

media and pre-press to create professional projects relevant to

your industry and further develop strong project techniques.

You will also discover additional facets of the design industry,

including photography and working with light boxes to develop

a full sense of the design industry in its entirety.

GRAPHIC DESIGN1 WEB

DESIGN2You will further explore the elements of interaction design,

learning about designing and shaping interactive digital

products for use.

You will further explore interface design for web and

communication devices, learning about making the user

experience as simple and easy as possible. You will work

with other designers to visually support website usability.

Students will work on design for content management systems,

focusing on various aspects such as user control for designers,

content editors and front-end programming.

Stage III – Interdisciplinary Projects and WORK PLACEMENT

Stage III is the final part of your studies. Here you will undertake an interdisciplinary project

of your choice – the final and most ambitious portfolio project of the course.

In this stage, you will also undertake an elective unit and gain valuable workplace experience

with our innovative industry internship program.

By the time you graduate, you will have a sound knowledge of many facets of the

design industry, graduating with a large portfolio of work in both physical and digital media.

You will have a full knowledge and understanding of the Adobe Creative Suite and, through

interdisciplinary projects and real-world tasks throughout your degree, you will make a

seamless transition into your career.

diploma of INTERACTIVE DIGITAL MEDIA (Web Design)

SYDNEY | MELBOURNE | AUS

diploma of PHOTOGRAPHY + PHOTO IMAGING

This course will give you the skills to enter a number of

different careers in the photographic industry including

fashion, architecture or commercial advertising photography.

You will gain the skills required to work alongside professional

photographers and be equipped with a range of knowledge

and skills for employment in wedding, portraiture, media,

documentary and art photography. You will also obtain the

visual communication skills that can lead on to an unlimited

amount of current and future positions in the creative and

documentary industry.

Course Requirements:

Students must also have the conceptual, technical and

organisational skills to use a range of professional digital

and/or film cameras and accessories to produce a folio

of photo-imaging work that demonstrates the ability to

respond effectively to different photo-imaging challenges

and requirements. These skills and knowledge may have

been acquired through experience, or through formal study.

All students will require the following equipment:

• DSLR camera body or equivalent

mirrorless camera body (Canon preferred)

• Zoom lens or set of Prime lenses

• 8GB - 32GB flash card/SD card

• Tripod (e.g. Manfrotto 190 XB)

• Camera Flash (e.g. Canon 430EX/580EX

or Nikon SB700/SB900)

This course can provide you with the folio and

knowledge that is required to continue your

studies into higher education.

NB: SAE Creative Media Institute reserve the right to
