Amy Jackson, DDS, MS - “Age Appropriate Treatment of the Developing Occlusion” AGD Code: 370 - Orthodontics

Synopsis: Techniques for correction of arch length problems in the mixed dentition that can reduce the incidence of extraction of permanent teeth. Benefits of arch length preservation with a mandibular lingual arch. Crossbite prevalence and age appropriate biomechanical interventions recommended for crossbite correction in the primary, mixed and young adolescent dentitions. Updates on Itero scans to replace Invisalign impressions.

Course Objectives: Crowding and space management; Treatment of developing crossbites; Benefits of space maintenance; New techniques in capturing teeth for Invisalign treatment

FEBRUARY GM SPEAKERS & TOPICS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

Carlen Palmer Blume, DDS - “Introduction to the Presurgical Naso-Alveolar Molding” AGD Code: 736 - Special Needs Patient Care (Pediatric Dentistry)

Synopsis:The Presurgical Nasoalveolar Molding, created by Grayson and Cutting, in conjunction with lip taping, is the only non-surgical appliance that addresses the lip, palate, alveolus and nose structure in patients with complete cleft lip and palate. The “PNAM” can direct cartilaginous development for nasal symmetry while orthopedically closing the alveolus and palate to prepare for surgery. The appliance is fabricated easily with Triad material and adjusted with simple lab tools and COE Soft. Additional materials include steri-strips, orthodontic elastics and Dyna-cleft tape. The use of PNAM with lip taping can significantly reduce the number of surgeries these patients experience. It is expected to be the standard of care for infants with cleft lip and palate in the near future.

Course Objectives: Identify the objectives of presurgical cleft therapy; Recognize the advantages of PNAM over other methods; Be able to explain to parents what to expect; Understands dentists’ role in early cleft care

Scott Janse, DDS, MS - “Radiographic Interpretation of Tooth Resorption - A Diagnostic Dilemma” AGD Code 072 - Diagnosis and Medications (Endo)

Synopsis: Tooth resorption is a difficult problem with causes that many times, at best, can be very vague. Radiography is a key tool in the diagnosis of tooth resorption. Significant demineralization of the involved tooth’s root is required before radiographic visualization is evident. The success of treatment modalities is predicated on the successful differentiation of internal versus external tooth resorption. Internal resorption originates within the root canal system while external resorption originates in the periodontium. This presentation will provide the basis for distinguishing external versus internal resorptive defects.

Course Objectives: Causes of internal and external resorption; Radiographic interpretation of resorptive defects; Prognosis associated with lesions of resorption

Dr. Brendan Farrell - “Antiresorptive Therapy: How Should You Manage Your Patients?”Synopsis: This table clinic will review the likely patients receiving antiresorptive therapy (bisphosphonates, denosumab, or Cathepsin) for osteoporosis, osteopenia, or as part of a cancer therapy regimen to reduce bone complications of cancer metastases in long bones. Help the clinician determine which patients can receive routine dental therapy. If a patient does have Osteonecrosis of the Jaw, how is the patient staged and what are the available treatment options.

Course Objectives: Nomenclature as it relates to antiresorptive therapy; Dental treatment as it relates to patients taking antiresorptive medications (Oral v. IV); Staging and treatment of patients with Osteonecosis of the jaw as a result of antiresorptive therapy.

FEBRUARY GM SPEAKERS & TOPICS

Sammi Raez, DDS, MS - “Extraction with Socket Preservation” AGD Code: 318 - Bone Grafting/GFT Surgery/Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Synopsis: Bone loss following an extraction can heal with a ridge width or height that is inadequate for implant placement. In addition, a depression on the ridge can result in a significant cosmetic or functional defect, including loss of surrounding gum tissue, therefore requiring the placement of an enlarged pontic to fill in the space. A surgical technique of placing a bone graft covered by a resorbable or nonresorbable membrane at the time of extraction can either totally prevent or greatly reduce the bone and soft tissue loss that normally occurs following tooth extraction. This procedure will restore the lost bone to develop a ridge that is both esthetic and capable of supporting an implant.

Course Objectives: Present Considerations for the Extraction and Socket Preservation technique; Indications for Socket Preservation; Methods of Temporization during socket healing; Technique of “Atraumatic” Extraction & Socket Preservation

Paul M. McLornan, DDS, MS - “Sleep Disordered Breathing - A Medical Problem with a Dental Solution” AGD Code: 160 - Sleep Apnea & Appliance Therapy

Synopsis: By 2020 it is estimated that up to 40% of the US population will have some form of sleep disordered breathing. Dr. McLornan will share how sleep disordered breathing is a medical problem with a dental solution and how dentists can incorporate it into their practices. He will share how to select and evaluate patients for treatment as well as an overview on delivering and adjusting an oral appliance.

Course Objectives: Discuss what Sleep Disordered Breathing is; How Sleep Disordered Breathing is diagnosed and treated; How to identify/screen patients for Sleep Disordered Breathing; How to fabricate, deliver and adjust an oral appliance to treat Sleep Disordered Breathing

Robert Loughlin, DDS - “Immediate to Provisionalization of the Full Arch Implant Restoration” AGD Code: 695 - Implant Restorative

Synopsis: A fixed full arch implant supported restoration has been utilized since the inception of dental implants. Traditionally, the many steps and required healing times has greatly contributed to treatment costs as well as serving as a deterrent for treatment. Performing extractions, implant placement and provisionalization with an implant supported fixed prosthesis the same day has served to decrease costs as well as significantly decrease treatment time. Patients also benefit from increased comfort and less follow-up care during the healing and provisionalization period. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate one of many treatment modalities in dealing with a terminal dentition and will specially focus on the immediate provisionalization of a full arch implant restoration.

Course Objectives: Case selection for full arch immediate implant provisionalization; Techniques for full arch immediate implant provisionalization

Brandon Sehlke, DDS, MS - “New Regenerative Technologies in Periodontics” AGD Code: 490 - Periodontics Synopsis: This course will review regenerative technologies available for treatment of both soft and hard tissue defects in Periodontics. A brief overview of various materials will be discussed to provide familiarity with new products and techniques being used on patients when referred for periodontal treatment. New technologies to be discussed will include Emdogain, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Gem21S, and soft tissue allografts (Alloderm/Dermis). This course will discuss the origin of the materials, their intended use, and some examples of patient treatment using these technologies. This will provide knowledge of the newest materials and techniques to the general dentist in order to enhance patient understanding and options for treatment prior to referral.

Course Objectives: An overview of new periodontal regenerative techniques for both hard and soft tissues; the origins and intended use of new periodontal materials; examples and indications for each type of material; a better understanding of new technologies to enhance patient education prior to referral.
