Dark Matter

I did not choose this title by chance. It shouldhelp visitors to read individual photographs ina different way than they usually do, when they seea picture which is no more than information aboutthe surface or purpose of a photographed object. Dark matter continues to defy scientificunderstanding. Although its nature and composi-tion remain unknown, dark matter is a funda-mental unifying and enveloping material of whichgalaxies are made. Were it not there, galaxieswould be unstable and in all probability couldnot hold together. This unseen matter appearsto be distributed throughout the universe, andsome experts claim it accounts for 90% or moreof total galactic mass. Man, seen as a unique individual, also resistsour understanding. Putting aside what can beweighed and measured, we are left with a mys-terious bundle of qualities and energies, invi-sible to others and often even to individualsthemselves. All the same, it is this unseen mat-ter which makes us unique. Our feelings, expe-riences, states of mind – is there anything elsewhich affects our lives so much? For me, the photographic images of seeminglycommon objects represent a means of capturingthis unseen matter of a human soul.
